How did you get started in your creative business? In 2005 I embarked on a project with my parents, Domenic and Sarina, and founded Goccia d Oro Olive Grove and Tren Creek Chalets in Capel in Australia s South West. We long had a vision of continuing our family s heritage of olive growing and oil production which originates in Calabria (Italy) and dates back generations. The concept aims to develop an olive grove, chalets, rehabilitate the creek line, and have animals, veggies and fruit trees - in essence, encourage others to live sustainably by showing what is possible and welcome people to enjoy our culture. What inspires you? Hard work and knowing that every bit of effort we put in builds on our family s heritage and our future, our vision. We also get inspired by seeing people enjoy our products and our property. What are you currently working on? We are currently working on a new range of hand crafted gift boxes and we plan to open a cellar door on the property at 2234 Bussell Hwy Capel. What is your favourite design/scent? Too hard to choose, our different olive oil varieties are unique and special in their own way, though Minerva is a great oil! What can we hope to see from your brand in 2013? How did you get started in your creative business? Blue Lawn Designs started around three years ago when we (husband and wife team Chris McDonald and Claire Bradshaw) decided to spend more time on creative pursuits. Claire enjoyed a short course in screenprinting and, given that Chris already had a five-year screenprinting apprenticeship under his belt, screenprinting seemed the natural way to go. Our series of 100% linen teatowels depicting the built environment of Fremantle proved extremely popular so we expanded our range of designs and products. What inspires you? The Blue Lawn design philosophy centres around celebrating the everyday in a new and interesting light. We turn to the landscapes, buildings, domestic spaces and natural environments immediately surrounding us to create our designs and enjoy printing all of our products by hand in our studio in Fremantle. What are you currently working on? We are currently finalising a range of 100% linen table runners that marry plant life with geometry and are developing screenprinted peg-boards that transform this ubiquitous shed item into a highly attractive display board for a range of roomps and purposes in the home. We are also now printing a number of our built environment images on plywood as well as on teatowels. What is your favourite design/scent? Fresh sawn timber. What can we hope to see from your brand in 2013? Through our new products, especially our prints on wood and pegboard, we hope to illustrate just how versatile and interesting screenprinting is as a design medium, offering the marketplace items that people may never have had in their homes before. How did you get started in your creative business? As a boy I remember watching my father tie his tie putting on his suit jacket as he prepared for work. I remember being excited at the thought of one day being able to wear nice clothes like he did. I believe there s every reason why Perth men can wear nice shirts everyday and be ok with it. There s no need to make a fuss it just is. What inspires you? I have a passion for 1930 s and 40 s, as a period of Art Deco styles. I love old movies, film noir in particular as it s explores relationships between men and women. Remember movies where shot in black and white, and I think there is a style that is present in those films that is hard to capture today in colour. I also love the smooth sultry Jazz, sassy brass bands, classic and timeless cars - when 50 mile an hour was really motoring. It all bundles together to form a reference point, a way of life, a style, an attitude, a presence. What are you currently working on? Having just completed my latest long sleeve shirt collection (Casablanca Collection), my thoughts move to a new line business shirts, classic colours but with today s touch and ideas for a short sleeve collection for this coming summer. What is your favourite design/scent? I love incense, and currently have a blend called meditation which I light early in the morning. If you re talking an evening out with friends (and a nice shirt, clearly), then Chanel Allure for Men every time. What can we hope to see from your brand in 2013? As the brand grows in 2013, Perth will see more Simon Hart shirts with signature design features and contrasting fabrics.
