Danijela Velimirovi WITH SOUNDS OF FIFE AND STEPS OF KOLO: CONSTRUCTION OF AUTHENTIC SOCIALIST FASHION Here we discuss the discourse of authentic socialist fashion deprived of Western influences. The usage of national symbols turned out to be ideologically acceptable. Fashion systems of former socialist countries were seen as cultural technologies built for specific locations. Here we discover different symbolic roles given to "authentic" fashion. Special attention is given to creating a Yugoslav fashion in "national key" that differed in style characteristics from the other socialist fashion productions. These clothes, inspired by traditional and medieval culture, are seen as a visual display of Yugoslav non-alignment position, but also as a competitive style to French haute couture and more and more popular Italian fashion. Key words: fashion, design, socialism, authenticity, ethno-motifs 89
