ACCESSORY TO OBSESSION I was four years old and playing in my parents living room when an ad on the back cover of a magazine lying nearby caught my eye. The ad was for a watch featured in multiple colors. I was immediately drawn to one particular color. I remember it so clearly: a digital watch with a dark pink vinyl strap with flower graphics on its face. Fixated on this pink watch, I knew I had to have it. I brought the magazine to my parents and declared I wanted this watch for my birthday. In the days leading up to my big day, I couldn t stop looking at the ad with my watch. On my fifth birthday, my wish was granted. It was exactly how the ad pictured it, pink with pretty flowers. My Dad punched two extra holes on the strap to fit my tiny wrist. I was on top of the world. For a very long time, that watch never came off my wrist, even when I went to sleep. And so it began my obsession with accessories. Six years later as a preteen, I was obsessing over plastic jelly bracelets in bright, neon colors with glitter sparkles, worn on the wrists in stacks. Charm necklaces were next on the list colorful plastic chains with charms dangling from them. The charms were miniature replicas of various, random items a teddy bear, a lipstick, a frying pan with bacon and eggs (go figure). The charms were removable and intense trading would ensue in the school yard with my classmates. Our parents didn t understand, but they bought them for us to make us happy. And last year when Silly Bandz, those colorful rubber band bracelets that come in fun shapes became all the rage among kids, it was bizarre to me, yet I knew exactly where these kids were coming from. My point? People of all ages love accessories. It begins so young. We may not have understood the reasons we loved them back then, but the feelings they evoke have not changed. At the carefree age of five, I certainly didn t need a watch to tell time or keep me on schedule. But it was the way I felt when I wore it. I was pretty. Cool. A grownup. It made me feel important my own PERSONAL item for me to wear every day. As adults the love affair with accessories is stronger than ever. We form a deeper connection to the reasons we covet them, especially with eyewear. It helps us see better. It protects us from the sun. But that doesn t mean we can t have fun with it and use it to look stylish and fabulous. In our eyes, eyewear may be the most powerful accessory but we haven t forgotten the allure of ALL accessories, be it jewelry, watches, shoes, scarves or ties. So once again we celebrate eyewear and its accessory counterparts with this Ultimate Accessory issue. Explore the latest eyewear from the most prominent designers, enhanced by accessory items from respective brands. Witness the powerful synergy conveyed by our expert pairing of all things accessory. Perhaps they will evoke some good feelings you experienced with your most cherished accessory items, like that pink watch I cherished as a child.
