PRESS DOSSIER COLLECTION DAVID H. BROLLIET, GENEVA 40 years of collector s passion and a 60 min documentary Exhibition from 26-05-18 to 30-09-18

THE EXHIBITION The Fondation Fernet Branca presents an exhibition of the collection of David Brolliet, collector from Geneva who for the past forty years has been passionately committed to contemporary art. David Brolliet who is known for his political commitment, but who also produces films and appears as a singer and actor, has more than one string to his bow. However, this exhibition focuses on the collector, his eclecticism, his favorite works, his commitment. The selection of works traces David Brolliet s path since his first piece chosen at the famous Geneva gallery Pierre Huber as an 18 year old: a sculpture by the Lyon artist Jean-Philippe Aubanel. Then come other Lyon artists and Swiss artists, some of them very well known like John Armleder, Sylvie Fleury, Roman Signer or Pipiloti Rist. In the middle of the nineties David H. Brolliet takes a base in Paris where he will meet the new art scene from that time: Saâdane Afif, Kader Attia, Wang Du, Richard Fauguet, Marlene Mocquet, Bruno Peinado, Barthélémy Toguo, Erwin Wurm, Chen Zhen His commitment is mainly reflected by his involvement in ADIAF (Association pour la Diffusion Internationale de l Art Français) who organizes among other things the Marcel Duchamp Prize for young artists. He had been a board member of ADIAF during several years before moving to Paris in 2009. He takes an active part in the exhibitions De leur temps where pieces belonging to ADIAF s collectors are presented. He is also actively involved in MAMCO (Musée d art moderne et contemporain) of Geneva to whom he has donated and lent important works. His Paris apartment is packed from floor to ceiling with his favorite pieces. He likes to describe himself as a committed if not professional collector ; he can be seen at vernissages and at international art fairs, but also in artist s studios alongside the artists he follows. This closeness to the artists is typical for Brolliet who never buys works without meeting the artist beforehand.

For about ten years, David Brolliet has been interested into the African art scene and has been travelling to Africa to develop his projects. David Brolliet s collection is eclectic. It is the result of his encounters and his favorite pieces since 40 years. In the small spaces of the exhibition, the very dense arrangement of the works seeks to recall the atmosphere of the presentation in the collector s apartment. The works are arranged by affinity, meet and sometimes confront each other. The concept in the big exhibition room is different: Here the larger works can deploy their best effect and visitors are able to move easier and get a wider vision of the exhibition and its various facets. Exhibition curators: Véronique Hillereau and Yann Rudler Practical information Vernissage: Saturday 26 May 2018 at 5.00 p.m. Exhibition from Sunday 27 May to Sunday 30 September 2018 Opening hours: from Wednesday to Sunday from 1.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. During Art Basel: from Monday 11 June to Sunday 17 June open from 9.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.

THE FILM The first contact with David H. Brolliet took place in to the early 2000s ; that s when the making of the film started; first at the occasion of interviews during art fairs like FIAC and then with a filmed visit of his collection in his Paris apartment. The project continued in 2015 focusing on Geneva and several events of the art world like the award ceremony of the Marcel Duchamp Prize at Centre Pompidou, the fairs Art Basel, Artemontecarlo, the Venice Biennale and also on private meetings with artists in their studios. The film makes you spend one hour with the collector who generously opens the doors to his collection and the art world and talks about the every day routine of maintaining an art collection. The 60 min documentary by Creativtv is presented during the exhibition. CREATIVTV Creativtv is a group of film makers who focuses on the art world and who in the past 20 years has produced a large number of artist s portraits and documentaries: Céramique Fiction, la céramique dans l'art contemporain; La Villa Arson, découverte d'une école d'art; Hors commerce, commande publique de livres d'artistes; Where is Kimiko?, portrait fiction de l'artiste Kimiko Yoshida... Short formats invite the spectator to share precious moments with art professionals and artists in their studios and exhibitions. Among the numerous artists who have participated in the films, just to mention a few: Raymond Hains, Jacques Villeglé, Orlan, Robert Combas, Daniel Buren, Jan Fabre, Christo, Fabrice Hyber, Valérie Favre, Richard Deacon, Yann Toma, Bernard Cousinier, Lee Bae Creativtv also plays an important role in the promotion of young artists, in particular in partnership with ADIAF and the Marcel Duchamp Prize by producing every year the portraits of the nominated artists. These videos can be seen in the exhibitions and on Creativtv.net, non-profit site dedicated to contemporary creation, free and without any commercial announcements.

History of Fondation Fernet Branca FROM DISTILLERY TO CONTEMPORARY ART The Italian company Fernet-Branca was created in 1845 by the brothers Branca. They produced a bitter herbal liqueur called Fernet-Branca. In 1909 a distillery was opened in Saint-Louis which was intended to provide Germany with alcohol. Over the decades, production and sales have declined in the Saint-Louis factory and the site was shut down on July 22, 2000. The deputy mayor Jean Ueberschlag applied at the Regional Office of Cultural Affairs to have the building listed in the inventory of historic sites. On July 4th 1996, by the prefectoral order nr. 95/155, the principal facade of the building including the eagle on top which is the company s brand symbol has been included in the register of historical buildings. That was the first step towards a new use of the site as a cultural venue. In 2004 the town of Saint-Louis started leasing the building from its owner and took over the conversion of the site into a museum of modern art with the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. 1500m2 of the 4000 m2 of the building are used for various exhibitions of contemporary art. The Espace d Art Contemporain is administrated by Association pour le musée d art contemporain Fernet-Branca, who sublets it and manages its cultural activities. It has in particular organized its launching in 2004. On June 15 of that same year, the Korean artist Lee Ufan inaugurated his exhibition, the first one organized by the Fondation Fernet-Branca. By the prefectoral order of December 21, 2011 the Espace d Art Contemporain acquired the status of foundation, named Fondation Fernet-Branca and was recognized as a public utility organization. In 2014 the foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary and inaugurated its 30th exhibition on June 13, 2015 with the Irish artist Claire Morgan. According to the status of the Fondation Fernet-Branca, the site is aimed to use the exhibition area of contemporary art while ensuring a tri-national reach and developing a policy for a wide access to contemporary art. In order to achieve this, its principle means of action are: the

organization and presentation of monographic, group or themed exhibitions as well as the development of an access policy to contemporary art for both young audience and large audience by offering introductory courses, workshops, conferences with an educational goal. The Fondation Fernet-Branca receives artists of all types and origins, local as well as international and it reaches out wider than just the region s borders as it no longer only attracts visitors from the nearby Alsace, Basel and Baden.
