BIANCA DE LA GARZA MAKING UP amovement MEDIA MAVEN TO BEAUTY DISRUPTOR: BIANCA DE LA GARZA IS THE FOUNDER OF THE MAKEUP MAKING UP A MOVEMENT. 101

SHE EVENTUALLY LAUNCHED HER OWN TALK SHOW IN 2015, BREAKING DOWN SOME SERIOUS BOUNDARIES AS THE ONLY WOMAN IN LATE NIGHT AT THE TIME. NOW, AS THE CEO OF A MULTI-MEDIA COMPANY, DE LA GARZA HAS SOLIDIFIED HERSELF AS A LEADER IN THE LATINO COMMUNITY AND HAS BRANCHED OUT TO EMPOWER WOMEN ALL OVER THE WORLD. A MAVERICK IN HER OWN RIGHT, THE PIONEERING BUSINESSWOMAN HAS SET OUT TO CHANGE THE GAME ONCE AGAIN, AS SHE IS REDEFINING BEAUTY IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD. INLOVE MAGAZINE RECENTLY CAUGHT UP WITH BIANCA TO DISCUSS THE NEW BDG BEAUTY LINE AND FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HER PLANS FOR THE FUTURE.. 102
ELITE PERSONALITIES 104 Sari: A TV journalist, then latenight host, to Latina CEO running your own production company, Garza Digital, and now launching a beauty line. What drives you to make such bold career moves? Bianca de la Garza: I never really felt my choices were bold, but more instinctual. In college, I fell in love with journalism - reporting about real people, sharing their stories. Living in a 24/7 news cycle covering major world events for a long time, I wanted do something entrepreneurial. I created a latenight show. It seemed like a logical step, news to entertainment. At the time, there was no woman in late night, so my show, BIANCA, was new and disruptive. That is exactly what BDG Beauty is about. 8
How was that, infiltrating the male-dominated world of late night TV? Did it prepare you as the founder of BDG Beauty now? We were disruptors because no one wanted a show on Saturday evening against long-time ratings winner, Saturday Night Live. But I didn t see that as an obstacle. To me it was an opportunity to stand out as counter-programming. We managed to beat SNL a few times. Now, founding BDG Beauty, I find myself again immersed and loving something that is counter culture. But it s not about ratings or winning a timeslot. It s so much bigger than that. This is about having an honest discussion about beauty. What is beautiful? Who gets to define it? How do we celebrate it? Why it should matter to every female on the planet right now. Let s get into that. When did you decide to start BDG few years back I started Garza Digital, developing TV projects for the international market. Not being on-camera every day, I didn t need a lot of makeup but wanted something to even out my complexion. Everything Beauty?A on the market was just so heavy. I realized all that makeup I wore for years had become part of my persona. People expected me to look a certain way. My boss would call me in and ask why my skin was breaking out or why I looked tired. Now, this is not a knock on the viewer or my management. It is a knock on our current society. Why is seeing reality, aka someone s imperfection, unacceptable? Because we are constantly bombarded with mass media s definition of what beauty is. Images that do not represent our wonderfully diverse world. BDG Beauty is my way to start rewriting that narrow, outdated narrative. My first product in the line is a statement on enhancing what we have, not covering up that natural glow. Tell me about your debut product, In GLO We Trust? It s an illuminating serum fusing makeup and skincare. I describe it as that perfect hybrid product that lets us look like us and does super good things to our skin, so we can be our fabulous selves. In GLO We Trust gives you immediate and long term benefits. I selected premium ultra-fine lightreflecting illuminators to give skin amazing, instant radiance. Our BDG Beauty Complex delivers hydration, combats hyperpigmentation and supports collagen production to make skin appear firmer and healthier. You can apply all over your face and wear with foundation if you choose. It works for all skin types and comes in three shades, so you can also mix and match. BIANCA DE LA GARZA How do you see In GLO We Trust in the everyday woman s beauty routine? I designed a no mess, pump applicator that travels easily and takes up very little space. It simplifies your beauty routine. You can apply without a brush or sponge, so your fingers don t even have to touch your face if you want to avoid that. Be it on a subway or waiting in your car for school pick-up, In GLO We Trust is easy and fast. We are busy and need multitasking products. Why would you buy ten products in an effort to attain something that you can get in just one step? What s next for BDG Beauty? In Glo We Trust is the first product in a comprehensive line we will be unveiling. Our offerings are all an innovative fusion of skincare benefits and makeup. We are different because our mantra is Less is more and you are enough. How do traditional beauty companies sell products? They create an impossible ideal of beauty, tell you how many flaws you have and how far you are from that ideal, and then they offer you hundreds of products in an effort to attain something that s unrealistic. We support a lifestyle of global inclusiveness. You were recently invited to speak at the Vatican at a forum on Humanity. What else are you doing to support this lifestyle of global inclusiveness? In addition to our products, one of the really exciting things about this brand is that it s serving as a catalyst to start relevant conversations. We ll be producing content with Garza Digital about what beauty means in the world today. Do you think it s possible for a shift to happen? Do you expect people to stop getting Botox or plastic surgery? A shift, yes...i think it is starting. I d love for women, especially in my daughter s generation, to understand how amazing they are - no upgrade necessary. When I hear about teenagers having work done, I worry. It s like Botox has replaced smoking as our vice. Let me be clear, I have zero issue with plastic surgery, as long it s a choice of free will and not a decision based on succumbing to societal pressure where women feel they must adhere to a beauty standard set by a select few. Loving yourself exactly the way you are - that is beautiful.
