MARYAN PINCHAS BURSTEIN, known as MARYAN. (1927 Poland- 1977 USA) 1927 Maryan is born the 1st of January in Nowy- Sacz, Poland. 1939 His family was arrested and placed in various ghettos and then in labour concentration camps. 1945-1947 Russians liberated the camps in Germany. Maryan had lost a leg but survived. None of his family lived. Maryan was 18. 1947-1950 Lived in Israel where he studied for one and a half years at the Bezalel Art Institute in Jerusalem; He had in 1949 his first one- man show at the Y.M.C.A in Jerusalem. 1950-1962 Moved to Paris, where he studied art at the École des Beaux- Arts for three years (two in the department of Lithography) and studied with Fernand Léger among others. He produced a series of lithographs, including those for Le Procès by Kafka. He established his reputation in Europe before moving to New York. 1962 Moved to New York, after an earlier visit to Chicago. 1969 Became an American citizen and changed his name to Maryan S. Maryan. 1976 French Government awarded him the honorary title Chevalier de l Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, December 15. 1977 Died in June 14, at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City.
