Dinner for two: wedding cake Dinner for Two: Wedding Cake is Rachel Hovnanian's take on narcissism the day after. For this new work, Rachel has recreated her Dinning Table which appears to have a partially eaten wedding cake inhabited by the most commonly used mammalian research model, a white lab rat. The missing first slice symbolizes the couple s first action as a sharing and faithful married couple, signifying the start of their union as husband and wife. Rachel s new work suggests a dialogue about the fate of the narcissistic couple at the dining table as it exists within the dynamic and volatile confines of a technologically close relationship. With her sly wit, the artist adapts technology and domesticity twisting traditional meanings toward new frustrated purposes. Rachel s continuous exploration of narcissism makes the viewer feel as disturbed as her traditional wedding cake at the centre of the table looks. The laboratory mouse, appears free to enjoy good fortune and fertility, (the wedding cake) while the bride and groom separately participate in an obsessive-compulsive manner on the Internet.
