Laurel Art Guild Highlights www.laurelartguild.org December 2014 Carol s Column Dear LAG Artists, Happy Holiday season! This is such a deep and reverent time of the year, as well as an exciting and actionpacked one. Artists can find a lot of inspiration in the significance and beauty of the season and in the closeness of family ties and friendships shared. Please peruse the newsletter for the latest information. LAG is now on track for its annual Juried Open. The dates are March 7 to March 29. Please find the prospectus at this link: http://laurelartguild.org/openjuriedexhibit/lagopen-2015.pdf. Our jurist is Catherine HIllis. We are excited about this upcoming event and give a thank you to Risa Elle for all of her effort in planning and preparing this event including designing the prospectus. In addition, Diane Shipley, our Exhibits Chair, has a list of upcoming exhibits on page 3. Plan now on the works that you would like to enter in each one. Let s surprise Diane, and make it unnecessary to ever again issue the midnight call for participation in LAG shows. Donna is continuing to plan workshops. Please see pages 3 and 4 for the latest workshop information. As can be seen from the article below, our November members meeting was another very enlightening and enjoyable experience. The month of December will feature the holiday party in place of a meeting. We will gather for our Holiday Party in the Chesapeake Room in Montgomery Station at Riderwood beginning at 11:30 for lunch at 12 noon. After lunch we will enjoy a talk and demonstration by the artist, Lee Boynton. He is an impressionist painter especially interested in color. Please bring new or lightly used items for the White Elephant Table. Money from their sale will go to the LAG Scholarship Fund. Following the December Christmas party is our January meeting, which will feature a critique by an excellent area artist, Brenda Kidera. More details on this meeting will be available in the January newsletter. Don t forget to submit the latest tidbits about your artistic endeavors to newsletter@laurelartguild.org by the 17th of each month. We would like to see your headline in the Member News section. May everyone have an enjoyable and refreshing Thanksgiving Day with family and friends! Carol Leo Review of November Program Submitted by Mary Ellen Simon and Phyllis Ross Once again, LAG members were treated to a superb demonstration of a different approach to making art. Our guest speaker, Deborah Maklowski, gave us a very interesting lecture demonstration on mixed media painting using gouache and color pencil on a sandpaper-like surface. Deborah's process begins with her own photographs because, as she says, color pencil is a notoriously slow medium that is not suitable for working from life. Deborah crops her photographs as necessary and converts them to black and white to check her composition. Then she creates a meticulous drawing on the sanded paper, followed by an under -painting made with gouache. Gouache is preferred because it is opaque, but she notes that acrylic paint would work as well. Deborah finishes the detail with color pencil, applying it in layers which allows her to blend the colors, creating a beautiful, luminous painting. Deborah notes that while this process is slow compared to a medium like watercolor, the use of the gouache underpainting speeds things up greatly. Again, we learned something new and exciting to try. IS THIS YOUR LAST NEWSLETTER? The final reminder to pay dues for 2014-15 has already gone out. LAG traditionally cleans its membership list in December. We are sorry to say that if your renewal isn't received by December 15, this will be your last newsletter. Contact Mary Ellen Simon at membership@laurelartguild.org

EXHIBITS:Submitted by Diane Shipley October 2 November 29 The exhibit at the Laurel/Beltsville Senior Center will be ending on November 29. Pick up of artwork is on Saturday, November 29 at 12:00 Noon. 2015 LAG will have an exhibit at Huntington Community Center s Art Gallery/Cyber Cafe in Bowie from March 3 May 4. More details will follow next month. May 1 - July 31, 2015 at Laurel Regional Hospital. 2016 Brookside Gardens - February 22 March 28, 2016 Workshop Update submitted by Donna Aldridge Our next workshop is January 31, COLOR AND DESIGN with Emily Conover, Professor of Art, Univ. of Maryland. The signup form is in this newsletter on page 4. No further workshops are scheduled at this time. Perhaps in the Spring, we start again. I had to cancel the Steve Fleming workshop in November due to lack of interest by members. I needed 10 artists and only had 6. Mr. Fleming wants to teach for us so I hope to reschedule and not lose him as an artist/teacher. The signup deadline is important because if you do not signup by that date, and I do not have sufficient numbers, I have to cancel the workshop or pay the artist even though we do not hold the workshop. Hot Tip Here is a painting tip from Don Andrews (AWS) watercolorist, that I learned from a recent 4 day workshop: Don has 2 formulas he uses to make beautiful grays. 1) ULTRAMARINE BLUE + BURNT SIENNA 2) CERULEAN BLUE + HALLOWEEN ORANGE (Am. Journey). Try 1 part orange and 3 parts blue. The first combination gives you some granular appearance because of burnt sienna. The second combination gives you a silvery gray that is great for clouds, rocks, shows on white areas, structures, walls, etc. TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT.
