Romeo & Juliet follows the tragic story of two young star-crossed lovers from rival families and their struggle to be together, as their love is forbidden. In the fair city of Verona, Romeo and Juliet, children of the feuding Montague and Capulet families, fall deeply in love. Despite the sworn contempt their families hold for each other, they steal away and are secretly wed. It is not long, however, before a chain of fateful events changes the lives of both families forever. Get Glamorous Sizzling Cecile Catwalk superstar Cecile Brits from Waterkloof Ridge recently set the stage alight at an exclusive international supermodel contest in Thailand. The 22-year-old talks to Natashia Slabbert about her exotic trip to Thailand, adrenaline-filled adventures on the ramp, chasing dreams and the perfect Valentine s Day. As soon as her Jimmy Choos hit the runway, the gorgeous blonde steps into an enchanted world of her own. The usual high-end, front-row crowd of fashion critics, magazine editors and celebrities fade away as everyday life ceases to exist. It is just herself, the music and the ramp. The adrenaline starts to flow through her long, graceful limbs as she steps into a perfect rhythm that echoes the beat of the music and sashays beautifully down the runway. At the end of the ramp she stops and strikes a flawless supermodel pose; her sequinned designer dress coming alive as the air around her explodes into a firework display of camera flashes. Hands on her hips, Cecile Brits holds her perfect pose while the international judges at the exclusive Supermodel International 2013 competition score away. The 22-year-old from Waterkloof Ridge doesn t lose her composure for even a second, although she is the centre of attention at a competition being broadcast live to more than 15 countries in Asia and Europe. She is a born supermodel, after all, and the international runway is where she belongs. It came as no surprise that the young Pretorian beauty later clinched a spot in the top five at the third annual Supermodel International in Thailand. This is not an achievement to take lightly, considering that this prestigious modelling pageant sees top delegates from over 25 countries compete in various categories such as swimsuit and evening gown in a challenging 10-daylong Miss Universe meets America s Next Top Model type of contest. A few weeks after returning, pageant beauty Cecile meets up with Get It to share the exciting experience of her Thailand trip. This fresh-faced Information Design student from the University of Pretoria s enthusiasm is infectious as she describes the whirlwind two weeks in Thailand. The trip included photo shoots with international magazines, press conferences and rehearsals, and exploring the beautiful Thai attractions with fellow contestants. As soon as I get onto that ramp, I become one with the moment. It s an absolute adrenaline adventure One of the highlights for me was definitely a visit to one of their elephant parks, and of course a trip to a wine farm. I was amazed, I could not believe my eyes. Here I was on the opposite side of the globe in the middle of Thailand and it looked exactly like the Cape. Then there was the amazing evening dining in the traditional Thai manner at a Thai restaurant. We sat on the floor while enjoying a variety of exotic dishes. I m still not sure what I ate but I enjoyed the experience immensely, she smiles. As Cecile continues to paint a picture of her magical Thailand travels, she is a curious combination of quiet modesty and supermodel confidence. It is remarkable that this beautiful girl with the world at her feet is so humble and shy I find it difficult to reconcile her sweet, sincere nature and downto-earth personality with the image of an over-confident supermodel cheekily strutting her stuff on the international catwalk. As if reading my thoughts, she starts talking about the walking-down-therunway parts of the competition and the adrenaline rush she gets whenever she steps onto the stage. Her eyes light up as she talks about those captivating ramp moments. As soon as I get onto that ramp, I become one with the moment. It is an absolute adrenaline adventure. I don t even see the people around me. It is just myself, the ramp, and the music very similar to my dancing. As soon as I hear the music, I get drawn into my own world, she grins. A world where she is allowed to dream big and see these very dreams come alive. After winning Miss Junior South Africa 2006 and Miss Spring Show 2011, being named first princess of Miss Tuks Rag Queen 2012 and making the top five at Supermodel International 2013, Cecile s next big dream is to participate in the Miss SA pageant. That would be the ultimate dream. Miss SA is about so much more than being a pretty face or being able to carry yourself on the ramp. It s about who you are as a person, it s about your character and the impact you have on the world around you and I can t help but admire that immensely. Text: Natashia Slabbert. Get Glamorous Apart from wowing at international catwalks, the young Miss SA hopeful, who is studying towards her Honours degree in Information Design at Tukkies this year, is also a qualified Cecchetti ballet teacher and proud owner of the Cecile Brits Ballet Studio. Ballet has always been one of my biggest dreams. I teach the young ones and it is so lekker! I am crazy about children. This year I m definitely looking forward to being able to spend more time at the studio with the children, it s so rewarding. With Valentine s Day around the corner I cannot help but wonder how Cecile manages to, between juggling international catwalks, ballet classes and University textbooks, make time for herself and those that are dearest to her. Luckily I love this busy lifestyle. Because I m such a bundle of energy and not a big fan of sitting around with my hands folded, I love to keep busy with a variety of projects. With a bit of hard work and dedication you can achieve anything you set your mind to without having to neglect the important things in life like your love life. She smiles shyly before admitting that she s definitely looking forward to Valentine s Day this year and hopes to spend quality time with that special person in her life. I m brimming with ideas for Valentine s Day. I m not fussed about materialistic stuff so if there is a gift or surprise involved it doesn t have to be expensive to be special. I especially love surprises. The perfect Valentine s Day for me would be something completely different or out of the box, like a trip in a hot air balloon with millions of red balloons tied to it, or a thoughtful little picnic She tilts her head to the side, smiling as she suddenly imagines a charming picnic or a million red balloons floating through the sky. It seems Cecile not only steps into her enchanted world whenever she steps onto the runway, but whenever a dream worth chasing crosses her mind. Head in the clouds, Jimmy Choos firmly on the ground, the blonde beauty is off chasing another dream. This time though, there s no runway involved, only a hot air balloon with millions of red balloons tied to it. Cecile in a nutshell: * Motto: Love the life you live. Be thankful for being here, embrace what you have and make the most of it. * Favourite movie: The Great Gatsby. * Favourite book: The Kite Runner. I recently watched the second instalment of the Hunger Games and it was amazing now I want to start reading the books. * Three items you will always find in my handbag: A pair of sunglasses, my wallet and phone and, if I may sneak in a fourth item, a bottle of my favourite perfume. * Beauty product I cannot go without: MAC eyeshadow and Loreal s 2-in-1 mascara. * Best beauty tip ever: Have a good skincare routine and don t forget the occasional face mask. Drink plenty of water. * Favourite celebrity: Kate Middleton yes, I have a thing for the royal family (laughs). I also admire Julianne Hough from Footloose. * Top destination: Definitely the Big Apple. It is such a lively, vibrant place I love the fact that New York City never sleeps. Locally, nothing beats the beach. Umhlanga is my absolute favourite beach spot. * Favourite musicians: One Republic, Bastille and Lana del Rey. I am also a sucker for Afrikaans music like Bobby and Karlien van Jaarsveld s music. * Va-va-voom outfit: It has to be my little, black dress it s perfect for those occasions when you are not quite sure what to wear and so versatile, as you can easily mix it up with any kind of accessories.

Get Hunky More on John s love life: - John recently married his girlfriend of nine years, Sonia, after she turned down his first proposal. I just realised one day that I couldn t see a future without her so I went out, bought a ring and proposed the next morning. She was in her PJs and said, This is not the right time or place. I was more romantic the second time around, even got some rose petals and did the whole romantic thing, and this time she couldn t resist, he winks. - The couple has a two-and-a-half year old daughter, Blake, together. - John and Sonia take turns on Valentine s Day to do something romantic for each other. We have a deal; one year it s her turn and the next it s mine. We don t necessarily make a big fuss of it, but it is important for us, even if it is just cooking a dinner or going on a weekend away, to spoil the other person.

Homegrown & handsome The capital city is now officially home to SA s most eligible men. Get It catches up with Mr SA 2013/14 s top three and discovers there is more to these hunks than meets the eye. Text: Natashia Slabbert. Photo: Annalene Rautenbach Mr SA 2013 John Owens Tall, dark and handsome, John Owens immediately draws admiring glances as he steps into the packed Pretoria restaurant. Looking very dapper in a dark evening suit, I almost don t recognise John from some of his Mr SA campaign photos, which have a much more casual vibe to them. If it s possible, the man is even more handsome in the flesh. Confident and self-assured, he makes small talk and mentions his love for sushi as we take our seats at Cape Town Fish Market in Menlyn Shopping Centre. From the get-go, this successful sales manager for a large African developer is surprisingly frank. There are no rehearsed pageant answers here, Mr SA has some refreshing views and opinions and is not afraid to air them. He wastes no time in setting the record straight about the stereotypical image that a Mr SA title holder is nothing more than an attractive underwear model. People have a certain way of summing up a male model and I don t fit into that box. I certainly don t mind having a photo or two taken of me, but I could never make a career out of it. It s just not exciting enough to make me get out of bed every morning. Which prompts me to ask him about his modelling gig for the PhD underwear campaign a few years back, which counts as modelling, right? He laughs as he explains that although he had fun with the campaign, it was a once-off experience done as a favour for a friend who needed someone to model the new range of underwear. The 32-year-old from Centurion is far more interested in the corporate side of things than modelling and has worked at the same private property trust, which develops holiday resorts all over Africa, for the past 12 years. It s apparent that John not only loves what he does, but is also very good at it. For the past eight years he has been nominated as one of the company s top five salespersons in Africa. His secret to success? I am a people s person. That is probably why I enjoy doing what I do to such an extent. When questioned about his childhood, John is also very upfront about his humble background and describes it as not the best of situations. The Pretorian hails from a family where the youngsters were expected to leave school early to go and work in the family trade. That was the fate that awaited us. My brother and I didn t want to go down the same route and vowed to make something of ourselves. Older brother Frank (43), currently living in Dubai where he owns a couple of hotels, is also the reason why John entered the Mr SA competition. According to John, his brother nagged him relentlessly about entering, even phoning him an hour before the entries closed, urging him to give it a go since it was the last year he would be able to do so as he had reached the age limit. I guess he just saw something in me, and knew that I could make a success out of it he is my biggest fan. So in all honesty, Mr SA was not my dream at all, I just entered to get my brother to back off, he chuckles. Imagine the Mr SA hopeful s surprise when he made the top 50. Feeling chuffed at the huge achievement, he was ready to fall out of the competition and carry on with his life not expecting to make it any further in the competition. I wasn t on Twitter and only had 250 friends on Facebook instead of thousands. No one knew who I was. I always thought Mr SA was a popularity thing and I wasn t necessarily Mr Popular. It is this very fact, coupled with his straightforward personality, that makes him so unique and different from other contestants. John explains that apart from Mr SA not being a popularity contest, it s also not a beauty pageant, but more like a ten-month-long intense job interview that takes contestants character traits and personalities into account. People have a certain way of summing up a male model and I don t fit into that box He feels strongly about the fact that he didn t change his personality for the sake of the competition and confesses that he is just an average guy who likes to drink beer and watch rugby over the weekends and that what you see is what you get. I was never the most easygoing contestant or the friendliest guy, if I didn t like something I didn t hesitate to make my feelings known. I showed my true colours from the beginning. I figured that if I won, I wanted to have won for being who I really was, and not for pretending to be someone else. February 14 Get It Pretoria 17

Get Hunky top five. From there I entered my first non-fitness competition under duress (laughs), and ended up winning the title of Mr Sun City Valley of the Waves 2009. The title of Mr Pretoria 2010 followed and I realised that a title afforded me a platform to be heard. I thought that Mr South Africa would be the best way to help me to be a voice in this nation, addressing current and important issues and making a difference. What has your journey at Mr SA taught you? Any tears-of-laughter moments to share? The Mr SA journey definitely forced me out of my comfort zone and challenged me in ways I never thought possible. I m specifically referring to the business and marketing strategy challenges that we were given. I had no choice but to step up to the challenge and ended up acing them both. Sometimes we just need to be thrown into the deep end to unlock our hidden talents and potential. There are quite a number of hilarious moments throughout the journey but two standout moments are Jeandre s dodgy bicycle riding skills along the promenade in Durban and Amro s flamboyant underwear poses during a compulsory underwear shoot. All 12 guys got along extremely well and we were in stitches most of the time. Text: Natashia Slabbert First runner-up Matthew Fincham Tell us more about who Matthew Fincham is? I m driven by faith and passion and enjoy putting smiles on people s faces and encouraging them to pursue that which they ve always wanted but thought impossible. Currently I am a personal trainer, but since the Mr SA competition I am ready to move into the corporate world and start my own business. Sometimes we just need to be thrown into the deep end to unlock our hidden talents and potential You were Mr Pretoria in 2010 and bachelor of the year in 2011. From there Mr SA 2013 probably seemed like a natural step. When did you first enter the exciting world of Mrcompetitions? I started by competing in fitness competitions in 2006 and won the FAME Nationals in 2007. Because I was ranked South Africa s number one fitness model at the time, it allowed me to compete at the FAME World Championship in Canada. Since then I ve done numerous fitness shows, always placing in the Tell us something about yourself not many people know. I make the best tacos in Pretoria and often dance like a crazy person while cooking to entertain myself (laughs). I ve been preparing healthy meals for eight years now and I ve run out of ideas to make the food interesting, so instead I try to make it an interesting experience. What are some of your favourite places in Pretoria? Pretoria Boys High holds a special place in my heart and played a big role in making me the person that I am today. Every time I drive past the school, dozens of great memories come to mind. With such a busy schedule, do you ever get time to relax? When you re not in front of the cameras and nobody is watching, what do you love to do to unwind? I enjoy being active, so downtime for me is still playtime. I love training and keeping in shape, playing golf, going for long drives, fishing and occasionally relaxing with a good DVD and indulging in a proper cheat meal. 18 Get It Pretoria February 14

Second runner-up Jacques Fagan Why did you decide to enter Mr SA 2013? My journey didn t start 11 months ago when I entered the Mr SA competition, but five years ago when I decided to make a positive difference in my life by stepping out of my comfort zone, taking on new opportunities and following my dream of living a life of success. I firmly believe that Mr SA should be someone with a life story, someone who has been through ups and downs but still keeps going because he believes in his dream and vision. I ve proven over and over to myself that we can overcome any fear we have if we face it head-on. You were born and raised in Cape Town but moved to Pretoria in 2012. Was it an adjustment to suddenly be without the Mother City s fresh, ocean breeze and more relaxed pace? What about the Jacaranda City has captured your heart so far? The first three months were the hardest for me a new city, a new job, not a lot of friends and a completely new environment. I just told myself to push through and that nothing good comes easy. Looking back, it was the best move of my life. I love my job working full-time for USN, and made amazing new friends that are true and real. I must add that I ve got a greater appreciation for Cape Town now and enjoy visiting for a holiday. The opportunities here in the Jacaranda City are endless and if you commit, you can make a success of it. Go to http://pretoria. getitonline.co.za for more questions and answers. As a USN fitness fanatic, you probably have to stick to a strict diet. Do you ever cheat? I think one of the biggest problems many people have is focusing too much on their physical appearance instead of spending enough time feeding their thoughts with the right nutrition (positive thoughts). As a USN fitness ambassador, it s important to look the part and respect the brand, which promotes a healthy, balanced lifestyle. When I prepare for a competition or photo shoot I apply the three Ds (discipline, dedication and determination) and then there s no place for cheating. But I love pizza, sushi, burgers and going for a few drinks with friends when I m not preparing for a competition. February is the month of love. Do you currently have someone special in your life? What makes you weak at the knees? I was very busy this year and as a result, focused completely on my goals. I m single at the moment and can t wait to meet that special lady that will sweep me off my feet. I love a girl that is confident and ambitious, someone who is emotionally strong and lives a healthy lifestyle she doesn t have to be a fitness fanatic, though (laughs). I always look at a woman s hands first, if they are well taken care of, it tells me a lot about how she takes care of herself. 002270w_GI

Pure infatuation Get smouldering eyes and voluptuous lips for that smoking hot Valentine s date. Makeup artist Leoné Lewis from Glamour (us) Creatives in Montana shows us how to go from plain Jane to sexy siren in a few simple steps. Compiled by: Natashia Slabbert. Photos: Alicia Lewis It s that time of year when we get to put aside our cynical selves and act like hopeless romantics. What better way to celebrate the month of love than with plenty of candlelit wining and dining? To make your Valentine s date a night to remember, look the part with luscious lips and smouldering eyes. Here s how: Luscious lips For a sultry pout you will need: Lip primer or base, a sharp lip liner/lip pencil to outline your lips, a lip colour in cherry red, a lip brush to apply the lip colour, and a sheer lip gloss (optional). 1. To enhance lip colour and smooth and refine your lips, apply a lip primer or base first. Then outline your lips with a sharp lip liner or lip pencil. Make sure to stay within the natural lines of your lips, Leoné advises. 2. Apply a cherry red lip colour with a lip brush. The lip brush will ensure maximum and even coverage. For extra shimmer, apply a coat of sheer lip gloss. 1. 2. Smoky, smouldering eyes For the smoky eye you will need: Black eyeshadow, maroon/deep purple coloured eyeshadow for blending, bronze/ gold eyeshadow, a highlighter with a bit of shimmer, black liquid eyeliner and a black eyeliner pencil. Before starting with this evening look, make sure to cover your eyelids with a base that is well blended. A good powder will do the trick for a non-oily look. Good coverage on eyelids will ensure that eyeshadows blend easier and last longer, says Leoné. 1. Start by applying a matt black eye shadow in the shape of a C on your eyelids. This will make your eyes appear bigger. When applying the colour, don t go higher than your eye socket, Leoné advises. 2.Next, blend the outer lines with a maroon or deep purple coloured eyeshadow for a burst of colour. When blending the lines, I love using a maroon colour to break the black. 3. After blending the C shape, apply the bronze or golden shade on the rest of the eyelids. Start blending as you apply the bronze eyeshadow to avoid a streaky look. Apply the bronze from the inner C until the edge of the eyelid. The black and bronze shades should flow into each other. 4. When you re satisfied with the blending, apply a highlighter with plenty of shimmer around the edges of the smoky eye up to the brow line. This will not only make your eyes stand out, but also make them appear bigger. To complete the sexy, smouldering look, apply black liquid eyeliner on the upper lids and black eyeliner pencil along your lower lashes. 1. 2. 3. 4. February 14 Get It Pretoria 21

Get Artistic Structural magnificence A magnificent Groenkloof home recently walked away with a prestigious international award at the esteemed International Property Awards in Dubai. Get It speaks to the local designers behind this beautiful work of art, Waterkloof s Mellet & Human Architects, on the inspiration behind the dream home and the challenges they encountered while designing this structural gem. 28 Get It Pretoria February 14

This award-winning Pretoria home is a place where art and sculpture fuse effortlessly, adding a cultural richness to the spectacular living space that is as unique as the art it houses. This captivating home, situated in Groenkloof, is drawing plenty of attention, both locally and internationally, for its magnificent architectural design. Architects Mellet & Human, based in Waterkloof, recently received merit and excellence awards from the South African Institute of Architects as well as a prestigious African Property Award in Dubai for the design. Judges were especially blown away by the down-to-earth ambience of the home. It is often the case that homes of art collectors are austere, with disproportionate interior volumes; a notion turned on its head by this residential building, as it evokes a down-to-earth ambience within well-proportioned indoor spaces. By taking advantage of the spectacular views surrounding the site, whilst confining itself to an untamed slope of the property, the house becomes a showpiece of unlimited, visually captivating lines. According to the architects, this impressive design did not, however, go off without its fair share of challenges. The brief was challenging and required a compact, one-level house on a very steep sub-divided property. It was a small site on which the clients wanted a house with all living areas on one level; existing trees had to be kept, and although the house had to be small, it had to accommodate a very extensive art collection. The architects designed the home around a linear plan consisting of three bedrooms and bathrooms and openplan living and kitchen areas with glass sliding doors that lead onto the covered patio and wooden pool deck. Bronze sculptures by Ruan Janse van Rensburg anchor the view. All living areas and bedrooms look onto a gallery that serves as a circulation and exhibition space for art. Clerestory windows ensure the house is extensively flooded with natural light and sensitivity towards the environment is further emphasised through the use of solar energy for running lights, the pool, fountains and household appliances. The resulting house conceptually integrates an art and sculpture gallery into a residential dwelling, which, like a high-level penthouse, takes advantage of the spectacular views of Pretoria surrounding it. This art-inspired dream home truly is a structural gem one Pretoria can be proud to call its own. Get Wining & dining Perfectly paired Summer s crisp, fresh flavours are cooling the sizzling Pretoria heat and bringing a light fruitiness to dishes and drinks. If you want to impress this Valentine s Day, read on to discover the experts tips for creating the perfect food-wine pairing for your romantic meal. Wine s been around since about 6 000BC King Tut was buried with it, Jesus shared it with his disciples and the Greeks and Romans devoted an entire deity to its celebration. Science says it ll make you live longer, reduce your risk of cancer and heart disease and slow brain decline in old age. South Africans consume more than 361 million litres annually, making wine a firm favourite in the local dining experience. With Valentine s Day on the way, now is the perfect time to buff up on your wine knowledge and impress that special someone. Pair complementary flavours A good guideline to go by is to pair mild wines with mild flavours, and strong wines with strong flavours. Lizelle Keramiakis, owner of the Moo Moo Wine Bar & Grill in Brooklyn, says it is important to consider the richness or heaviness of both the food and the wine of choice. A rich, spicy steak dish will overpower the taste of a light wine while a heavy wine will clash with a light dish like grilled fish. Her suggestion? Figure out what the main element of the dish is, because this is what the wine should be paired with. The main element is not always the protein, very often it s the sauce or how the dish is prepared, she says. In curries, where the main element is the spice blend and not the meat used, a slightly sweeter wine with less tannins, like a rosé, sparkling wine or an off-dry Riesling will work well to tame the heat be it red or white meat. Rules not set in stone The rule red wine with red meat and white wine with white meat is a good place to start, but it is certainly not set in stone. According to Carolyn Martin, co-owner and marketing director of 30 Get It Pretoria February 14

Text: Dominique du Plessis. Photos supplied by Creation Wines Creation Wines, which supplies top Pretoria restaurants like Kream, Capeesh? and the Lombardy Boutique Hotel, there are very few golden rules when it comes to pairing food and wine. But there is a reaction between the iodine in light fish and the tannins in red wine that results in a metallic taste, she explains. Nonetheless, she emphasises that the rules are open to interpretation. Light reds like Pinot Noir are fantastic with heavier fish like salmon, tuna or even game fish like yellowtail. She adds that white wine with red meat does not produce a reaction. According to Carolyn, the three most important elements of a wine to consider are tannins, acidity and sugar. More tannins means the wine can stand up to stronger flavours and works well with protein-rich foods. Next, she says acidity in wine should be matched with acidity in food, for example a Sauvignon Blanc s tartness works well with the acidity of a tomato and goat s cheese tartlet. Lastly, a dry wine served with sweet food will exaggerate the dryness, so try to match the sweetness of the dish to the sweetness of the wine. Trendy and seasonal Summer is winding down, so make the most of the fresh blooms and deliciously fruity flavours, which create a definite seasonal trend in wine as well as food. As the food is light and fresh, so too are the wines that accompany it. Carolyn says that flavours to look out for in this season s wines are dry rosés, whites that exhibit some savouriness and delicate reds like Pinot Noir that can pack a real berry and spice punch but are light enough to enjoy over lunch. Rosés and blush wines pair beautifully with light seafood dishes, while white Zinfandel and Riesling wines have a sweet, pleasant crispness that goes well with summer salads. The Pinot Noir s dry, refreshingly fruity taste profile pairs well with light chicken dishes, quiches and other light summer foods. Blow the budget, or not Many debate the question of price when it comes to finding a wine to match a particular meal. Of course it depends largely on the occasion; is Valentine s Day a big celebration for you as a couple or do you prefer to save the big bucks for anniversaries and birthdays? Cheaper wines can definitely be as good as expensive wines, Lizelle emphasises. Wine can be expensive due to factors other than the wine itself, she says, such as the size of the farm, the packaging, or simply that only a limited quantity of a specific blend was bottled. That said, a R40 bottle of rosé is not going to match the flavour profile of a R400 vintage, oak-matured Cabernet Sauvignon. Carolyn confirms this, saying that you get what you pay for up to a point, since better quality raw goods and time-consuming processes used to make the wine may also play a part in determining its cost. As with the finer things in life, there is something special about the idea of only the very best grapes being delicately picked by hand and made into just a few barrels of the smoothest, most beautiful wine, Lizelle says. But truth be told, there is probably something just as good available at half the price. Perhaps the most important rule of all, and the one which the experts agree on wholeheartedly, is that there are no rules. Drink what you like and what tastes good to you. If you like it then it s good. Strawberry and gorgonzola salad Creation Wines pairing of strawberry and gorgonzola salad with their new Whale Pod Rosé is ideal for a Valentine s Day dinner. Ingredients for salad (serves four): 250g mixed salad leaves 100g wild rocket 250g strawberries 100g creamy gorgonzola cheese 100g chopped pecan nuts Ingredients for salad dressing: 100ml extra virgin olive oil 60ml good balsamic vinegar 10ml honey 5ml wholegrain mustard Arrange the salad leaves on the plate. Wash and chop the strawberries and arrange in rings on top of the leaves. Tear the cheese into small, bite-sized pieces. Sprinkle the chopped nuts on top and finish with rocket. Lightly whisk together all the dressing ingredients and pour over just before serving. WIN Creation Wines new 2013 Whale Pod Rosé has an array of berry aromas interwoven with a gentle whiff of rose petal. The palate is lively and refreshing, with mouth-filling raspberry flavours and a hint of pomegranate leading to a tangy, savoury aftertaste. Creation Wines is giving away two bottles of their new Whalepod Rosé. SMS the word Rose and your name to 42282. SMSs cost R1,50 and free SMSs do not apply. Competition closes on 21 February. Get Exploring The ideal island retreat Anytime is a good time to visit the Seychelles. Pristine beaches, fantastic snorkelling in crystal-clear waters and great local cuisine are just some of the things that make this tropical paradise a top destination - ideal for a romantic breakaway. T he Seychelles is unspeakably beautiful. From the minute you land, you are taken aback by the raw, natural beauty it exudes. Bright azure waters stretch out far into the distance until they blur into the blue of the sky and everywhere the landscape is lush and green. It s like an escape to another world. The heat was intense though, so I made a beeline for the ocean the minute we got to our hotel. The water was so clear that I could count each of the blue and yellow stripes of the emperor fish swimming near my legs and see the intricate designs of the Picasso triggerfish weaving through the seaweed. It was amazing. 40 Get It Pretoria February 14 This of course made snorkelling an awe-inspiring experience. As part of a diving trip, we travelled out by boat to one of the uninhabited islands. The fish were quite tame, and often came to swim right alongside us. One in particular, a giant silvery-yellow batfish, made me quite nervous at first, since he seemed to be lurking just out of eyesight behind me every time I looked. But the locals explained that his was a naturally curious and friendly species, often following snorkelling tourists around, and that he just wanted the pleasure of my company which I gladly gave him. The more adventurous of our group went scuba diving and saw everything from lionfish and giant moray eels to rays and sharks. The giant tortoises are also a sight to behold. On our trip around the island La Digue we got the opportunity to see and stroke these ancient beasts. The oldest, Esmeralda, was born around 1771, making her a whopping 242 years old. Local sellers offered us the most wonderfully aromatic, fresh vanilla pods and we toured the island chewing the flesh out of coconuts picked from the trees. The locals also take nature preservation to a new level, relying on bicycles and oxen carts for transport. We didn t see a single vehicle while there. Our hotel s namesake, the coco de mer, can be found everywhere on the

Text and photos: Dominique du Plessis island Praslin, our home for the week. We had a surprisingly high number of South Africans who came over on the same flight, and one little boy in particular could not stop giggling at the fruit, calling out loudly to his mother Kyk mamma, dit lyk soos boude! On Praslin, the famed Anse Lazio beach certainly lived up to the hype; it is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Clear turquoise waves lap soft, powdery, white sand and tall palms provide the perfect shade for lazing on the beach all day. A word to the wise: bring enough sunblock and aftersun. The prices at the stores are sky-high, since everything is charged in either euros or dollars, and no matter how careful you think you ll be, the beaches are just too fantastic to spend only one or two hours in the sun and you are bound to get burnt at some stage. Insect repellent is also an essential bring-along. A night without it may leave you with upwards of 50 bites, as one unlucky, unsuspecting bride-to-be who accompanied us found out after taking a snooze on the hammocks. As much a mark of a place as the landscape is the food. Seychellois cuisine is a fantastic blend of African, French, Chinese, Indian and English flavours, and the variety on offer ranges from sublime to too weird to try. The fish is an absolute must, the creamy coconut curries and grilled red snapper are unrivalled, and the breakfast menu of green papaya flapjacks, a Seychellois twist on an English favourite, and exotic fruits like rambutan (the weird hairy fruit in the photo) and dragon fruit (looks like sushi rice inside) is uniquely local. The weirder of the dishes include grilled rousette, or fruit bat, and shark chutney, neither of which I was keen to try. It s almost customary to enjoy a drink of freshly cracked coconut water straight from the fruit, and since I d heard so much about its amazing health benefits, I decided to give it a try. It s not a taste most people are fond of, but it grows on you, and served ice-cold in the extreme heat and humidity it certainly is refreshing. The local beer was, however, a superior choice. A novelty I found particularly enjoyable was the underwater bar at one of the hotels, which allows guests to remain in the hotel pool while sitting on underwater seats to enjoy a drink. I have heard that there is a pumping nightlife on the islands, especially the main island Mahé, but we chose the Seychelles specifically to get away from the rush of urban living. I can get enough of noisy nightclubs and shopping malls back home. Our days on the island were spent lolling around the pool sipping cocktails, strolling along the shady pathways taking in the heavenly view, sailing on the clear ocean water in a catamaran or cooling off in the ocean, swimming with the tropical fish the perfect relaxation after a year s hard work. If you re looking for a peaceful retreat, a little slice of heaven where you can escape from it all, the Seychelles is definitely the place to go. Bright azure waters stretch out far into the distance until they blur into the blue of the sky
