SEAN BLEM Hyperextension 04-27 APRIL 2014 NIROXprojects

INTRODUCTION Opening on Friday, 04 April 2014, NIROXprojects will be hosting an exhibition by Sean Blem who is currently artist in residence at the NIROX Foundation in the Cradle of Humankind. The work on display at NIROXprojects from 04 to 26 April is the result of his site-specific research, which ties into his long-term projects and practice.

STATEMENT Resident at the NIROX Foundation, Cradle of Humankind, Sean Blem has engaged in continued research and documentation of early areas of human habitation in Southern Africa. His interpretation of cartographic connections explores the link between specific archaeological sites in the Cradle of Humankind, to more recent Iron Age and contemporary sites of human habitation. In addition, he has extended his cartographic exploration into another similarly unknown area of our universe, the human brain: In particular the prefrontal and frontal cortices. This area of the brain is what differentiates us from other primates, and has enabled the development of protective shelter, leading to architecture, speech, language and the development of artistic interpretation, music and culture. As the parameters of thought expanded, our frontal cortices took us to the moon and beyond. Often to great interdisciplinary benefit, science and the arts have been linked, as demonstrated by the works of Leonardo Da Vinci and Goethe. As research materials are investigated using archaeological, neurological and earth observation techniques, Sean Blem believes unexpected and unknown paths of further exploration will become evident, cohesively enhancing our understanding and knowledge in the future.

BIOGRAPHY Born 1969 in Bloemfontein, South Africa, lives and works in Zurich. He studied at Parsons School of Design Paris and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Between 1990 and 2014 his work was exhibited in prominent public spaces around the world. He is engaged in long-term projects, each combining in-depth research with the production of artefacts: works on paper, photography, text, painting and sculpture. Focused long-term investigation is an essential element of his working process. Concept and ultimate creativity are fertilised by exploration of the forgotten, lesser and unknown. Recent and ongoing research associations are with the Museum of History of Pharmacy and Medicine, Basel; ETH, Swiss Institute of Technology, Zurich; Wits, Johannesburg; and the NIROX Foundation.
