A Seat at the Table It s that time of year when everyone wants to show off their fine china and become the ultimate host and hostess, and it s no wonder. What better time to step up the effort to wow guests (and perhaps even yourself) than the holidays? Following are a handful of tips for setting the perfect holiday table: OPT FOR SIMPLICITY SOME- WHERE. Even a table setting that resembles a work of art, like the one here designed by Isabelle Peribere, the mastermind behind L Atelier Isabelle Peribere, a full-service residential interior design firm, knows when to hold itself back. In this case, Peribere opted for a color palette of crisp white, silver and gold. The trio manages to exude both elegance and the holiday spirit at the same time. If your color preferences are more bold, it s best to pare down the number of items you place on the table. You want a look that s sophisticated, not overthe-top people are there to eat and enjoy conversation, after all. SPEND AS MUCH TIME IN THE DINING ROOM AS IN THE KITCHEN. Raised in France by a mother who considered entertaining a religion and dressing tables an art, Peribere often relies on her mother s advice. She used to say, If it doesn t look great, it doesn t taste as good, Peribere says. You taste with the eyes before your mouth. As a result the time I spend in the kitchen usually equals the time I spend in the dining room aligning silverware, arranging flowers and compulsively putting the final touches on the table settings. CONSIDER THE ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS. When designing the setting here, Peribere opted to echo the whimsical character of the two Fandango lights designed by Danny Fang that hang above with their muslin cotton petals. This led me to create a botanical centerpiece with layers of fresh flowers and cotton, mixed with artificial branches and leaves, Pereribere says. The artistic character of the lights led her to look for plates that are pieces of art themselves, hence her choice of this Fornasetti Eve set. Whatever you choose to display, consider how the elements work with the light fixtures and overall design elements in the room. Elevate a Cozy Holiday Brunch Who says dinner has to be the main holiday event? A chic brunch can be just as elegant yet more relaxed. Styled by Mandy Kellogg Rye of WaitingonMartha.com, this tablescape is fresh, not fussy. Plaid turns sophisticated when it brings in an unexpected color like yellow. Mixing vintage mercury glass with rustic faux antlers also adds an air of sophistication, Rye says. Instant upgrades like wrapping raffia around napkin rings and serving store-bought juice in a beautiful glass pitcher maximize the effect with minimum effort. It s hard to imagine a rustic cabin tucked away in the woods with a fire blazing inside when you live in South Florida, but that was Rye s inspiration when designing this table. For any mid-day meal, the table should be casual but still festive, she says. Rye kept the décor light in color and accented with traditional reds and greens. The florals were seasonal and placed in both large and small vessels then mixed with candles to complete the look. I added mini evergreen trees, but rosemary trees would provide the same natural element to the table, plus a pop of fragrance. Holiday Delights Sure to Impress An Acorn Kale Salad from A Joy Wallace Catering, Design & Special Events, adds a touch of color and sophistication. Let s face it: Appetizers, desserts and cocktails are the best parts of just about any meal. We went right for the good stuff when we asked top local caterers to share their personal favorites. Serving one (or all!) of these palate pleasers is sure to land you on Santa s nice list. If you think running around in your kitchen instead of mingling with your guests is overrated, you can always have your fete catered by one of South Florida s best. They ll put on a party your guests (and you) will remember for years. Fear a riot if you don t trot out your famous Beef Wellington? Mix it up: Make a few traditional family favorites everyone looks forward to, and have everything else catered. It s the best of both worlds! Theirry s Catering s Matcha Green Tea Opera is (almost) too beautiful to eat.
