Why Reef Friendly? At the current rate of decline, 90% of the world s coral The Cause reefs may be gone by Although rising water temperatures the year 2050. around the globe play the biggest role in the stressing of coral, other factors can contribute to the loss of coral reef ecosystems. One of these factors is SUNSCREEN. The latest research shows that certain chemicals in sunscreen effect how sensitive corals are to the rising temperature of the ocean and their ability to reproduce. According to our National Park Service, 4,000 to 6,000 TONS of sunscreen enters reef areas annually. This does not spread out rapidly or evenly over the entire ocean, but accumulates on popular tourist sites. It is estimated that 90% of snorkeling/diving tourists are concentrated on 10% of the world s reefs! This means that our most popular reefs, such as those in our national parks, are exposed to the majority of sunscreens.
Coral Bleaching May 2017 marked the end of the longest, most widespread, and possibly the most damaging coral bleaching event on record. It affected more reefs than any previous global bleaching event. Sunscreen ingredients like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate have been shown to worsen coral s sensitivity to rising water temperatures which is the main catalyst to coral bleaching. Below is a list of harmful ingredients that are NOT found in Coral Isles Sunscreen: Nanoparticles Scientists have discovered that small particles (below 100 nm) of Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide are dangerous to many marine species including coral. Because of their very small size, mineral nanoparticles found in many popular brands of sunscreen can be ingested, causing internal damage to the animal. (For example, a fish breathing it in through its gills). Oxybenzone Recent studies conclude that Oxybenzone damages coral DNA, causing deformities and inhibiting the coral s ability to reproduce. Oxybenzone also acts as an endocrine disrupter, causing juvenile coral to encase themselves within their own skeleton, contributing to their death and preventing future generations from repopulating. Oxybenzone also increases coral s sensitivity to rising water temperature the primary cause of coral bleaching worldwide. Octinoxate Like Oxybenzone, Octinoxate can be an endocrine disruptor to coral. Although Octinoxate is typically used in smaller amounts in most sunscreen products, it takes much longer to biodegrade, making it equally hazardous. Parabens Parabens are a common preservative found in about 85% of personal care products including many brands of sunscreen. Recent studies have found parabens in the tissues of animals from even remote marine sites, indicating that parabens are ubiquitous in the environment. Once thought to be perfectly safe, new research has shown that parabens display endocrine-disrupting activity in tests performed both in the laboratory and in nature.
About Coral Isles Coral Isles Sunscreen was created because of the urgent need to protect one of Mother Nature s most amazing natural resources coral reefs. Did you know that nearly one out of every four marine species makes its home on a coral reef? And those habitats are in severe danger of being wiped out. The effect of sunscreen on coral reefs has been a topic of intense study by scientists in recent years, driven largely by the alarming rate at which coral reefs are dying off. Our goal with Coral Isles sunscreen is to provide a line of sunscreen that s not only reef friendly, but also consumer friendly. Finding the right reef-friendly sunscreen can be confusing. There are two common types of sunscreen mineral and chemical. Although both provide effective broad spectrum protection, each are different in how they adhere and feel on your skin. Our unique solution was to give consumers a choice when shopping for a reef-friendly sunscreen. Whether your focus is wearability or protecting extrasensitive skin, rest assured that both our reef-friendly formulas will protect both you and the environment.
