FLASHBACK 2017 all art is contemporary 5 th edition counter-clock world turin pala alpitour, isozaki November 2-5, 2017 New venue, new galleries and a new program, which runs counter clockwise FLASHBACK, the most contemporary fair of ancient and modern art reaches this year its 5 th edition and runs - in Pala Alpitour in Turin, from November 2 nd through 5 th - counterclock inspiring to Philip K. Dick science-fiction novel where time runs counterclockwise, a time against the clock, against the stream, which represents the different perspective, the subjective point of view, the opportunity of looking differently at what is surrounding us. The originality of FLASHBACK lays in its ability to look at the artworks with new eyes, without preconceptions linked to the date, but letting the moment of its enjoyment dictate the real dynamicity of the work and establish its modernity. Starting from this intuition, the two directors - Stefania Poddighe and Ginevra Pucci - have built an ever-growing pathway, where the wish to experiment has moved at the same pace of the respect and tribute to the splendid artworks the gallery directors have exposed throughout these years. Starting therefore from the 2013 edition, which was discovering the enigma of time (it was the first time ancient and modern art would enjoy a contemporary appeal). We moved - in 2014 - to the labyrinth, through which the directors led the galleries and the public, allowing them to discover new, unexpected synergies; in 2015, the propeller to the event was energy, i.e. the thrust and merging between art and life. In 2016, the theme was again syncretism, i.e. the meeting of different cultures, which generate new worlds. Ginevra Pucci and Stefania Poddighe: Reaching its fifth edition, we can state that FLASHABACK actually represents an example of how culture and market can be united and be beneficial to each other. The event was born and is growing within this binomial, which also represents the duality of our souls. All the subjects that have been dealt with are starting points for reflection, questions we also ask ourselves in our every day s life, and all the works are tools we use to interpret our present. FLASHBACK's pathway has ben shared by its supporters, as witnessed by Giovanni Quaglia, Chairman of Fondazione CRT: Looking at the past with the eyes of the present, the present counterclock borrowing the under title of this fifth edition of Flashback -, in a new perspective, covering paths which had not been trodden yet, is a way to see reality that also belongs to Fondazione CRT, which is supporting this appointment with contemporaneity. Innovation and creativity lead a large part of our activities in a double key: on the one hand through the support to those initiatives that leave room to the youths, to their talent, to the creative forces of the territory; on the other hand, through projects and initiatives we undertake directly, often breaking grounds that have not yet been explored. A few days ago, a new international hub of creativity and innovation was opened : the OGR, Officine Grandi riparazioni, which have been revamped and returned to the town thanks to a 100-million Euro investment by Fondazione CRT. The
OGR which from train workshops have turned into a workshop of ideas - are the most extraordinary challenge in the 25 years of Fondazione CRT's history. The Fondazione per l Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT deserves a significant role in the field of art and culture, as - since 2000 - has been enhancing - through the purchase of artworks - the permanent collections of Galleria Civica d Arte Moderna di Torino and of Castello di Rivoli Museo d Arte Contemporanea. The Fondazione per l Arte also supports the promotion of the contemporary art system in Turin and in Piedmont, promoting training, exhibition, educational and communication activities. We are glad to support this appointment with contemporaneity. FLASHBACK is therefore reaching this 5th edition enriched by the previous experiences ad is ready - once more - to look at art with different eyes and with a new reading key, which shall be useful not only to understand the past, but also to read back and interpret the present. This is the spirit that gave life to the collaboration with Pascale Marthine Tayou, curated by Galleria Continua; Tayou's life pathway is characterized by an artistic, geographic and cultural nomadism that contributed to make of him one of the main protagonists of the contemporary artistic panorama. Its work looks multifold, indomitable, involving, deep, unexpected, proliferating and multi-colored, always strictly linked to the idea of the journey and of meeting the "other than self", a journey that creates new perspectives to be shared. Plastic Tree - the work, developed as site-specific for Flashback, shows a tree as a symbol of stability and resistance of nature, whilst the plastic bags its foliage consists of are a fetish, a product of the contemporary word insofar it accompanies the gestures of urban consumption. The installation is a roving object that wanders back and forth between the rural and urban contexts. Also Ms. Francesca Paola Leon, executive counselor of Culture of the Municipality of Turin, is adhering to this project of personal implication through artistic expression, as she underlines The return of FLASHBACK, where ancient and modern art unite tracing new pathways, opens to unexpected reflections and contaminations. Artists and galleries stimulate reflections on art through different languages, starting from its contemporaneity to land to a different way of narrating, perceiving and representing art as an "always contemporary" human expression Flashback's proposals is configured and developed through a set of appointments whose aim is investigating art and the ways to deal with it: from pedagogy to the valorization of unusual exhibition spaces, up to the training of the public, to whom the event is addressing an invitation to personally imply activating their own critical sense. Flashback, then! The momentous work of Tayou, as well as the numerous galleries and the rich program, shall be hosted for the first time by the central hall of Pala Alpitour, with exclusive entry from piazza d armi, which the startarch collective of architects has redesigned, conceiving a fully magenta staging, which will be this year's color. Numerous new entries and some appreciated comebacks, reference points for ancient art such as W. Apolloni from Rome, Walter Padovani and Galleria Silva from Milan and Cesare Lampronti with his galleries in London and Rome. Also as far as modern art is concerned, many renowned galleries have selected FLASHBACK for the first time, such as Galleria Frediano Farsetti from Florence, Galleria Allegra Ravizza, with premises in Switzerland and USA, Galleria Russo from Rome, Galleria Torbandena of Trieste and Tornabuoni Arte, with premises in Florence, Milan, Forte dei Marmi, Paris and London. Amongst the treasures, at the fair you will be able to admire the splendid Bathsheba at the bath signed by Artemisia Gentileschi and Bernardo Cavallino (1626-38) exhibited by Cesare Lampronti, the oil on canvas The thirst of the Crusaders under Jerusalem. by Francisco Hayez of gallery W. Apolloni, the portrait of John Belasyse by Anthon Van Dyck, a pupil of Rubens, who is universally acknowledged as the most important portrait painter ever, presented by Gallery Robilant + Voena, the Madonna and Child with Saint John by Abraham Janssens (approx. 1615 ) of Gallery Luigi
Caretto and the Sibyl in terracotta of the first half of the 8 th century, of Gallery Walter Padovani. There will also be a wooden Pietà sculpted by Jean de Chetro (approx. 1470), presented by Flavio Pozzallo, the oil on canvas by Martin Van Meytens, the Youth (1728) of Benappi, The Last Supper of Bologna painter Francesco Cavazzoni from the Bentivoglio D Aragona collection of Carlo Orsi and some oil paintings on copper by Jan Brueghel (approx. 1635 ca.) of Caretto&Occhinegro. The 5 th edition of FLASHBACK shall be focused on Futurism, as a movement that shouts for the centrality of man, of the concept on mankind and human condition, which are elements required to think back to and reconstruct our present. Some of the greatest galleries of modern art shall present a selection of works that represent social transformation, political changes, movements of peoples, all factors that stretch to entirely change the perception of distances and time, "approaching" the continents to one another. FLASHBACK looks at art counterclockwise, it reverses the perspective, changes the point of view and tells the contemporaneity of the works exhibited from Tayou to Artemisia Gentileschi, from Burri a Anthon Van Dyck, to analyze in deeper detail the movement of Futurism and allow for a time leap reflecting on the creative process through exhibition Phillip King BEHIND ICONIC SCULPTURES. The creative process evolution, curated by Patrizia Bottallo, which shows the study to devise the artistic idea of one of the most important English sculptors in the second half of last century. Back to a reflection on the birth of the event and on the theme of immortality, FLASHBACK, all art is contemporary, finds back its own roots with Luca Tomìo, who is presenting an exhibition project titled L'arte che non c'è (The art that is not) where a very mysterious self-portrait by Gino De Dominicis stands out by rarity. And, like every year, starting from the first edition in 2013, the FLASHBACK è OPERA VIVA project, by which artist Alessandro Bulgini declares that the event and all the masterpieces presented are Living Work, will accompany and strengthen the concept of the fair. In 2014, Opera Viva left the spaces of art to move to the suburbs, through Opera Viva Barriera di Milano which, with the curatorship of Christian Caliandro, market the countdown to the Fair. This year, the project was freely inspired to the Small Moral Works by Giacomo, Leopardi, which ideally connects to Philip K. Dick's counter-clock world (1967), in the sign of a different perception of history and of the artistic memory : time starts passing counter-clockwise, taking back to life what was dead and gone: authentic contemporaneity consists of the collapsing of the time dimensions: arts is useful to redefine ourselves, to reconfigure our identity, to constitute the memory of what we have been and - mainly - of who we could be. This is not an archeological search in our either near of remote past, but the awareness of how much this is an integral part of our space of existence. The poster wants to give a taste of all this: a window and - at the same time - a crawl space. A crack that helps us glimpse what has been and what is to come. The works by Raffaele Fiorella, Calixto Ramirez, Cristiano De Gaetano, Fabrizio Bellomo, Roxy in the Box and Alessandro Bulgini, together with all the life fragments collected, unite in one exhibition to narrate this window open on and for the world.

FLASHBACK_video. The section dedicated to the images in motion focuses - for this new edition - on the Neapolitan partnership between Nicola Spinosa and Mario Martone; two documents developed for the Superintendence of Naples by the Italian director and set designer. They are not actual art documentaries but - rather - movies featuring an editing with images linked to the urban reality: on the narrative form of the poetical documentary, between reality and fiction, with the aim of narrating the contemporaneity of art, investigating the balance between the objective and subjective view. FLASHBACK_sound Spazi Sonori (Sound Spaces), jazz concerts and sound tracks curated by Mauro Battisti in the lounge area of the exhibiting space the visitors will be able to attend three highquality musical appointments; three ad hoc projects presented by famous musicians who belong to the national and international jazz-oriented scene. Furthermore, in the exhibition space, the refined sound landscapes of Land(e)scapes, a project by Ivan Bert and Andrea Bozzetto, will communicate in an extemporary discrete way with the works in exhibition, thus creating a timber texture of great effect and suggestion. FLASHBACK_talks Reasoning Against the Stream From today to yesterday, the FLASHBACK talks, show the main feature is the temporal analysis of the cultural and artistic phenomena. Up to last years, the themes have examined the topics and their succession throughout time, the themes have therefore been taken into consideration according to a dynamic, in fieri perspective. Thins year - instead - taking inspiration from the title of the program, "counter-clock world" as in Philip Dick's book, the selected themes shall be covered counter-clockwise, starting from an analysis of
contemporaneity to melt it with the past and analyzing the contemporaneity of the proposal irrespectively on the historical period. FLASHBACK_storytelling Narrazioni Anti-Orarie (Counterclock narrations). The project promotes - through narration - the sensitizing and the direct active involvement of the public; an innovative key to approach and stimulate the critical sense aimed at incrementing the interest and attention towards art with its cultural, political and economic meanings. The guided visits, which will select specific works, artists or expressive languages, will build up a short immediate interaction: actual FLASHBACKS on history and curiosities suggested by the works in exhibition.
