ABSTRACT This project researched into the production of shea butter body lotion. The extraction of shea nut oil from shea nut seed was carried out using hexane as a suitable solvent. The oil/butter obtained was off white in colour with a pleasant odour. The produced oil was degummed, neutralized, decolourized and deodourized to make th,e oil more suitable and to purify. The butter was characterized with saponification value of 179.8 mg/koh/g, acid ~ value of 4.71 mg/koh/g, free fatty acid FFA of 2.36, iodine value of 57.5 gig, specific r--...., 'Z.... - gravity of 0.09 and oil c(:mtent of 130 %. These vahles show that the oil is a good raw,---- material for soap manufacturing and cosmetic industries and has a long shelf life. The shea butter was further processed to produce shea butter body lotion with the addition of lavender oil, citric acid, cetearyl alcohol, stearic acid,\glycerine, allantoin, honey, green tea, vitamin E oil and aloe vera juice. The shea butter body lotion produced was of a consistent texture, showed minimal patch reaction and had a pleasant smell..~---- vii
