A New York Times Bestseller Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden's wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. Background[ edit ] Larsson spoke of an incident which he said occurred when he was Days later, racked with guilt for having done nothing to help her, he begged her forgivenessâ which she refused to grant. The incident, he said, haunted him for years afterward and in part inspired him to create a character named Lisbeth who was also a rape survivor. Murray have said that Christopher MacLehose who works for British publisher Quercus "needlessly prettified" the English translation; as such, Murray requested he be credited under the pseudonym "Reg Keeland". Blomkvist is sentenced to three months deferred in prison, and ordered to pay hefty damages and costs. Harriet disappeared during a family gathering at the Vanger estate on Hedeby Island, when the island was temporarily cut off from the mainland by a traffic accident on the bridge. Salander was ruled legally incompetent as a child and is under the care of a legal guardian, Holger Palmgren. When Palmgren has a stroke, he is replaced by Nils Bjurman, who uses his position to extort sexual favors from her and eventually rapes her. After using a hidden camera to record her assault, Salander takes her revenge, torturing Bjurman and threatening to ruin him unless he gives her full control of her life and finances. She then uses a tattoo machine to brand him as a rapist. They describe rules about the treatment and punishment of women, and Blomkvist correlates one of them with the grotesque murder of a Vanger Corporation secretary in Blomkvist realizes that he may be on the trail of a serial killer, and the scope of the resulting research makes Blomkvist request a research assistant. When he sees the report she prepared for Vanger, Blomkvist realises that Salander has hacked into his computer. He confronts her and asks her to help him with the investigation, to which she agrees. The two eventually become lovers, but Salander continues to keep Blomkvist at an emotional distance. Moreover, most of the murders occurred in locations where the Vanger Corporation did business. While Salander continues to hunt through Vanger Corporation archives, Blomkvist manages to identify the antagonist who frightened Harriet so: Martin takes Blomkvist prisoner, reveals that Gottfried "initiated" him into the ritual rape and murder of women before his own death, and implies that Gottfried sexually abused both him and Harriet. Martin admits to murdering dozens of women but denies killing his sister. He decides to rid himself of Blomkvist once and for all, but Salanderâ who had discovered the connections independentlyâ arrives and hits Martin over the head with a golf club before cutting Blomkvist out of his restraints. Martin flees by car, pursued by Salander on her motorbike, and chooses his own fate by purposely colliding headlong with an oncoming truck. When Blomkvist flies there to meet her, Harriet tells him the truth about her disappearance: Martin was sent away to preparatory school, but he returned the day of her disappearance. Harriet realized she needed to escape, so she found a place to hide during the tumult of the traffic accident, and Anita smuggled her to the mainland the next morning. Blomkvist persuades her to return to Sweden, where she reunites with Henrik. Salander, using her hacking skills, succeeds in stealing some 2. Blomkvist and Salander spend Christmas together in his holiday retreat. Having expected Blomkvist to be with his daughter, she backs away when she sees him with his long-time lover and business partner Erika Berger, hurt by him lying to her. The novel, according to one article, endorses a pragmatic acceptance of a neoliberal world order that is delocalized, dehumanized and misogynistic. The novel is in fact far from what American critic Maureen Corrigan calls an "unflinching She is portrayed as having suffered every kind of abuse in her young life, including an unnecessary ordered commitment to a psychiatric clinic and subsequent instances of sexual assault suffered at the hands of her court-appointed guardian. The transcription of Latin expressions e. What I believe is known as a locked room mystery, on an island. And nothing in the investigation seems to follow normal logic. Every question remains unanswered, every clue leads to a dead end. Reception and awards[ edit ] The novel was released to great acclaim in Sweden and later, on its publication in many other European countries. From there, it becomes classic parlor crime fiction with many modern twists The writing is not beautiful, clipped at times though that could be the translation by Reg Page 1

Keeland and with a few too many falsely dramatic endings to sections or chapters. But it is a compelling, well-woven tale that succeeds in transporting the reader to rural Sweden for a good crime story. The protagonists were played by Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace. A Hollywood film adaptation of the book, directed by David Fincher, was released in December The main characters were portrayed by Daniel Craig [25] and Rooney Mara. This version of the miniseries comprises nine hours of story content, including over two hours of additional footage not seen in the theatrical versions of the original Swedish films. Chapter 2 : Millennium (novel series) - Wikipedia The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Book 2 is the final volume of the comic book adaptation of Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. From early childhood, Salander has a history of violence and vindictive behavior. Most of the incidences are triggered by attacks either to herself, or to the few people she cares for. One time she was beaten by a school bully, but she refused to back down even though she was no match for him. After licking her wounds, Salander returned with a baseball bat and slugged the bully around the ear. At twelve, Salander threw gasoline on her father and set him on fire after he administered a vicious beating to her mother, causing her brain damage. As a repercussion of the incident, her father almost died, but managed to survive, but with severe scarring. She was declared a danger to herself and others by the court at age thirteen, and sent for treatment at the St. She refused to talk with psychologists, police, teachers, and social workers. The one person that she would speak to was Advokat Holger Palmgren who was assigned as her trustee until she came of age. Stefans and placed with a foster family. After running away from her first few families, Palmgren explained that she would be placed back in the psychiatric clinic which convinced Salander not to run away from the next family. At eighteen, she proved to be uncooperative, disdainful of most authority figures, and frequently fought with others. After a particularly violent altercation with a man that attacked her, the court psychiatrists felt she would be safer institutionalized. At the court hearing, Palmgren acted as her legal representation and worked hard to convince the court that she was not dangerous, and should instead be put under a guardianship. Palmgren, went from being her trustee to her guardian. Their relationship grew to be one of the most importance for Salander. Salander learns she has a new guardian, Nils Bjurman, since her previous guardian, Holger Palmgren, had a stroke and cannot continue with his duties A guardian is someone appointed to protect individuals unable to take care of themselves. They oversee their finances and personal life. Their role is similar to a parole officer but they have complete control and can send them back to a mental institution at will. On the other hand, she felt uncomfortable with this new guardian. His predecessor, Advokat Holger Palmgren, had been of an entirely different ilk: He uses the opportunity to teach Salander how their guardianship will go, forcing her to perform oral sex. Salander, not being the sort to go to the police on any matter comes up with her own plan to take care of the situation. She sets up a hidden camera in her bag, hoping to catch Bjurman in the act. She visited his home to receive money for food; only to betied down and raped by Bjurman. However, she captures the assualt on camera. Salander comes up with another plan, she asks for more money to pay her rent and is able to subdue Bjurman by tasering him. She then strips him naked except for his socks, ties him to the floor and demands he give her access to her money; she uses the recording of him assaulting her to blackmail him and also tortures him. When Bjurman agrees, Salander releases him, though not before tattooing the words "I am a rapist pig" on his chest. Blomkvist tries to help Salander, even though she herself wants nothing to do with him. He then calls an ambulance, saving her life by having her air-lifted to a hospital. She is portrayed as having been an extremely bright but asocial child who would violently lash out at anyone who threatened or picked on her. One day when Salander was 12, Zalachenko beat her mother so badly that she sustained permanent brain damage. In retaliation, Salander set her father on fire, leaving him permanently disfigured and in chronic pain. While there, she was placed under the direct surveillance of psychologist Dr. Peter Teleborian, who had earlier conspired with the Section to have her declared insane. During her stay at the hospital, Teleborian put her in restraints for the most trivial of infractions â mostly to vent his repressed pedophilic urges. Teleborian declared her legally incompetent in a conspiracy with the Section, in order to make sure no one would ever believe her accounts of what they had done. At her trial, Salander is defiant and uncooperative with the prosecution. At the same time as Annika starts questioning Teleborian, the 10 members of the Section are arrested and charged with a long list of crimes. Salander is set free the same day, her name cleared. She refuses the money, but goes to a disused factory she has inherited. She nails his feet to the floor, and then calls a gang who wants him dead to tell them of his whereabouts. Before they arrive to kill Niedermann, she contacts the police. That night, Blomkvist Page 3

shows up at her door, and the two reconcile. Physical Description and Personality Edit Lisbeth is described as being rail-thin, with short black hair, with a tattoo of a wasp on her neck. She has multiple piercings and has a boyish body with non-existent hips and small "child-like" breasts. In the films she has a large tattoo of a dragon on her back. In the third film, Salander replied to a comment from one of the doctors treating her that it had hurt and it had taken hours for the tattoo to be applied. Mikael Blomkvist states that she has beautiful eyes. Being nearly unable to empathize with others, she is exceedingly anti-social, and feels no hesitation or guilt in performing great acts of violence on others, particularly if her survival is at stake. However she does have some sympathy, particularly towards people she generally trusts such as Miriam Wu, her fellow hackers, and Mikael Blomkvist to some degree. Though a strong female character who perhaps thinks somewhat less of men than women, Lisbeth is not completely consistent with the feminist archetype, as she seeks out breast surgery in an attempt to feel better about her body image, silently seeking the approval of or at least support of her own desire in her bedfellows. She is a rapid analyst, her initial impressions of people often turning out to be correct, and a skilled hacker who breaks nearly every measure of digital security that she sets her mind to. Partially due to her background, Lisbeth is very paranoid, trusting fewer than 3 people in the world and only then to a certain degree. Despite displaying a level of maturity, she still allows herself to be hurt by seeing Mickael with Erika, holding a grudge for over a year like a child. Though she begins to open up more, particularly to Annika in the third novel, the only people to whom she shows any confidence are Mickael and Miriam. Page 4

Chapter 3 : The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Wikipedia The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Book 2 by Denise Mina, Leonardo Manco, Andrea Mutti Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden's wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. Years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. Book 1 Review Share. By Joey Esposito Full disclosure: Denise Mina Hellblazer, A Sickness in the Family is right at home here, diving head first into the Swedish crime series without any reservations of losing the reader along the way. The greater problem comes in the fact that Dragon Tattoo â and the adaptations of the other two books to follow â is split into two volumes. In some ways, it feels empty because of it. In fact, it ends before the two heroes of the tale even meet, though the entire narrative seems built to bring the two story threads together. Fortunately, the slow burn of the murder mystery plot combined with the methodical and intriguing characterization of Lisbeth makes for an enjoyable experience overall. Dragon Tattoo is an unapologetically cold undertaking reflected too in its snow-ridden setting, as Mina keeps all of the characters at a distance from the reader. This is a narrative more focused on the plot than it is the players within it, though not necessarily at the total sacrifice of characterization. Interestingly, the most guarded and mysterious of the entire cast, Lisbeth, is the one that we get to understand most. Everybody else feels like another pawn in the chessboard of the plot, but Lisbeth manages to standout on her own despite her scenes being relatively brief and, in a few cases, excessively brutal. There are exceptions at random throughout the book, but in general the artists are pretty evenly split by character. Their dichotomy works well, though their styles are drastically different. Manco approaches the world and characters with a fatally realistic style, including meticulously detailed characters and atmospheric backgrounds. Manco has the unfortunate distinction of rendering the aforementioned assault sequences, but the discomfort and impact of the scenes are made all the more potent because of his sharp style. Manco uses a series of four panels to softly punch in on Lisbeth from the same angle as her makeup ever-so-slightly begins to stream down her cheek as she sheds a tear. In general though, Mutti and Manco do an effective job of bringing this dank world to life. He thinks knows the world needs more horror comic books. It presents ideas to the reader with little insight from the characters themselves, save for Lisbeth Salander. The book suffers a great deal from being split into two unnecessary chapters, so you might be better off waiting until Book 2 releases or Vertigo collects them together if you want a complete experience. Still, Book 1 is an interesting and complicated tale that should satisfy most readers that are on the hunt for a new crime series.
