North Beach Artist Guild October Artist of the Month Terry DeHart Artist Terry DeHart is the October Artist of the Month at The Gallery of Ocean Shores. Terry s work will be featured all month in The Gallery at 849 Point Brown Avenue NW in Ocean Shores, Washington. Terry will be at the Gallery on Saturday, October 20, from Noon to 4:00 p.m. to meet you and discuss his work. This Third Saturday Event also features live music and refreshments. Terry DeHart Photography www.terrydehartphotography.com Much of Terry s photography is of places or things people have abandoned. Deserted farms, factories, vehicles, commercial establishments and towns have always caught his interest. Some have outlived their usefulness or just wore out. Whatever the reason, looking at those things has always made him wonder about the history and the people who were part of that history. Other favorites of his are snow scenes, buildings (picturesque to decrepit), doorways and windows. He also photographs landscapes and other scenic views. Also he enjoys photographing people, either as candid shots or in natural settings. Lately, he has been taking photos of more foliage and flowers. Although he has taken pictures in less than ideal conditions, he has been able to turn them into something he likes using different computer programs. Many of his photographs are as taken with a few tweaks to exposure or saturation and many of them have been altered to suit his vision of the subject. Sometimes the scene is right, but everything else is wrong. Between RAW processing, Photoshop and some other software he uses, he can sometimes turn and otherwise flat scene into a brightly lit sunny day, a cloudy day, a dramatic sunrise or however he visualized as the final picture. He does have people ask him if that is exactly what he saw or did he manipulate the photograph. If he did, he tells them so, if not, he usually mentions that he may have increased the saturation a little or adjusted the light and dark areas. If a painter can take a dreary day and turn it into a soft morning lit painting, why shouldn t the photographer do the same thing? Terry finds that sometimes people feel that any photograph can be saved using Photoshop. Photoshop and other processing programs can do a lot, but for the most part and bad photo remains a bad photo.

New Art at the Interpretive Center The art at the Coastal Interpretive Center billboard is now a stunning photo by Terry DeHart. Come see the wonder and while you're there, enjoy the Center. The poster (in a smaller version) is available at both the Center and the Gallery of Ocean Shores. The posters from each piece of art created by local artists and displayed at the Interpretive Center are available in limited quantities, so check these out and collect your local art. The Coastal Interpretive Center and The North Beach Artist Guild will continue to partner with local artists in 2019. All Guild members (including Gallery artists) are invited to participate in this exciting partnership bringing our art to the community. Details and criteria for submitting your artwork are detailed in the enclosed announcement.

North Beach Artists Guild and Coastal Interpretive Center All Guild members (including Gallery artists) are invited to participate in the continuation of an exciting partnership with Coastal Interpretive Center to bring our art to the community. North Beach Artists Guild is providing art for the display case in front of the Coastal Interpretive Center at 1033 Catala Avenue SE in Ocean Shores. We are interested in continuing that partnership to include posters to display at the Coastal Interpretive Center. Each poster contains one image to be displayed for two months. They are looking for portrait layout images that promote the work of the Center and the exhibits it features. This might be a great opportunity to visit the Center and see all that they do. For example, their exhibits include: Natural History Human History Wildlife Maritime Sea Mammals Heritage Industries Shellfish Native American Geology Ocean Shores Forests North Beach The Interpretive Center is eager to move forward on this exciting project, and we told them we would put together an informal show of about 30 images for them to consider. Representatives of the Interpretive Center will select the images to display and to feature on posters. The Interpretive Center is likely to prefer representational images rather than abstract ones. We have identified a number of subjects we thought would be of interest, including: driftwood elk fish fishing boats sunsets shore birds beach scenes jelly fish eagles If you have artwork you would like to display at the Interpretive Center, please bring your art to the Guild Workshop at 849 Point Brown Avenue in Ocean Shores on Monday, October 15, between 10 a.m. and noon. The artwork will be available for pickup on Friday, November 2 nd, from 10 to noon. Images do not need to be framed. If you can t come to the Workshop at this time, please contact Melanie Knight to arrange your participation. If you re a Gallery artist and think some of the work you have hanging in the Gallery might be appropriate, please let the Hanging Committee know, so they can move your selected pieces to the Guild Workshop for a few days. They ll move them back to the Gallery once the Center committee has made its selections. Artists retain original artwork. The Interpretive Center and the Guild will create duplicates for display and sale in limited poster form. Any revenue from the sale of posters will be shared by Coastal Interpretive Center and North Beach Artists Guild. Please call or email if you have any questions. Melanie Knight - (425) 280 9082 or nbag-os@earthlink.net
