Art Society of Strathcona County Mailing Address: PO Box 3061 Sherwood 1Park, AB T8H 2T1 Street Address: 590 Broadmoor Blvd, S. Park artsoc@telus.net www.artstrathcona.com Ph: 780 449 4443 January 2018 NEWSLETTER President s Message Wow, that was a busy year! The ASSC accomplished many things in 2017 just have a look at the list later in this newsletter. Thanks to all members who participated and came forth with ideas and suggestions. I do hope you found that participating meant you were being part of the fun and the success this year. Many new members have been involved in different ways this year. Thank you! Every hour of volunteer time is very much appreciated in a Society as busy as this one, but involvement does not just mean volunteering, it also means being together in the Centre as often as possible to meet, share ideas, socialize, and just plain talk about art and other stuff over a coffee and snacks. There will be some different options offered this year, one being the Drop In Painting days, however, prior to implementing this a volunteer has to come forward to open the Centre on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 am. See the schedule later in this newsletter. Please come by whenever you can. Welcome to new Board member, Gail Lacey thanks for coming on board! and thanks to the other Board members who are returning. To all members, please remember to update your profile on the website so we get to know you and your art! After all, it is 2018, you know! On your next visit to the Centre, please admire the refurbished flooring and the additional railing along the Loft stairs thanks to Strathcona County. Hopefully by the third week of January, Sue and others will be enjoying the exciting new furniture and flooring in the upstairs office! Be sure to have a look! To all those travelling south and beyond this winter, our thoughts are with you. May you return safely to be with us. I have enjoyed leading the Society throughout 2017 and I do thank you for honoring me with the position again in 2018. I will try to live up to your expectations and do hope that you will help this Society to build a strong arts community and encourage the love of art wherever you can! You might remember in your prayers the many who lost homes, family treasures, and yes ART in southern California

and across Florida and the Carribean. We are indeed fortunate to live in Alberta free to share our passion with friends and the world! May you all enjoy a peaceful, artistic 2018!! Happy New Year! Sonja. Thanks to Laura Bruce, Sophie and Dan for setting up at December potluck/meeting and to all members who stayed to clean up. EXPLANATION OF VOLUNTEER HOURS AND MEETINGS If you have accumulated volunteer hours in 2017 and you pay your membership fee before January 31, 2018, those hours can be carried forward to 2018. If your fees are not paid by January 31, 2018 your 2017 accumulations will be lost and you will be required to record 20 hours of volunteer time and attend 3 meetings prior to showing artwork in the Spring Show, Fall Show or the Loft Gallery. If you do not intend to show artwork in the Loft Gallery or the Spring or Fall Show in 2018, then this ruling does not apply - BUT the Society would like to know that you are on board so you can participate in the Christmas Market and any other events that will be organized throughout the year. Also, if you are on the membership list, you will receive the monthly newsletter to keep you up to date on happenings and news!!! Fees can be paid at the January 9th meeting, mailed to the ASSC (PO Box 3061, Sherwood Park, T8H 2T1), dropped off at the Ottewell Centre or phoned in to Sue at the office on any Monday or Wednesday afternoon from 12 to 4 pm. Library Corner Greetings, Happy New Year Everyone!! We re starting the New Year with a re-organized and re-labelled library. The cabinets are reinforced now to hold the weight of all the fantastic books that we have, and we ve labelled each section with tags in big print for easy viewing. One entire cabinet is full of watercolour books and that s after our give-away of older watercolour resources at the December meeting. We hope that everyone who went away with the free magazines we gave away enjoys them and learns from them but please don t bring them back! Pass them forward to someone else who is interested in art, even just as eye-candy. Perhaps one of your New Year s resolutions is to learn to paint in a medium outside your comfort zone. We have some new videos that can help with that. Here s a review by our own Vern Wall on a DVD we acquired at the end of 2017. Painting Workshops By Richard Robinson, New Zealand First a caution: this DVD does not play in a regular DVD or Blue Ray player. I was only able to view it by playing it on my computer. Richard is widely recognized as a plein air painter. He hold many workshops around the world, mostly plein air. Two of the paintings on this DVD are from the B.C. West coast. There are four separate paintings on this DVD. There are two each of acrylic and water-missable oil. Each picture is well described as to the choice of location, the particular selection of the view, the type of canvas or board, brushes, and paints. Each of the presentations are about 30 minutes long. There is lots of instruction as the painting progresses, including how he mixes his colours. I found this a very satisfying instructional DVD by a very professional artist. This is worth a watch or two. Stop by the Library Corner at the January meeting and browse through all the resources they re really easy to find now! Kind regards, Your Library Committee
