Ek weet pappa gaan sê: I told you so, lag Monique. Monique is ook later vandeesmaad op die verhoog in die Classics is Groot konsert by die Moreletapark-auditorium tussen 23 and 24 June. Musiekliefhebbers kan uitsien na groot name soos Amira, Jannie Moolman, Corlea, Touch of Class, Coleske, Joseph Clark, Swing City, Charl du Plessis en die Joburg Ballet Company. Kaartjies is by www.ticketpros.co.za beskikbaar. Monique se gunstelinge: Wat is jou skoonheidsgeheim? Sonskerm, sonskerm, sonskerm. Ek is nie iemand vir te veel tierlantyntjies nie. Ek maak my vel elke aand skoon, en gebruik natuurlik n bevogtiger. En dan gebruik ek elke dag sonskerm. Gunsteling kos? Sushi by Yamazaki. Wat is jou gunsteling koffiewinkel? Aroma Coffee Roastery. Wat is is als in jou handsak? Hand sanitiser, my beursie, my foon, Ellie Saab parfuum, my motorsleutels en n borsel. Wynand Davel Bradley Cooper Alicia van Dyk Barry Steenkamp It s all about the Mamba Radio Kalahari Orkes has been making music for more than 10 years and fans can t get enough of their alternative music and ways. We re obviously also big fans and caught up with Ian Roberts to find out more about the band s brand new album and the road to success. T he members of Radio Kalahari Orkes are scattered across Pretoria and Johannesburg and after a five year silence they ve finally released a brand new album. They got their unique name from a fictitious radio station they started in the small town of Slangfontein and see themselves as a real-life band that plays the music you hear on the station. Cool right! The band first got together when we had to record a DVD for the song The Crying Shame and fans loved it so much we decided to work on an entire album. I guess it was kind of like a potato that slowly but surely made its way to the surface, says Ian, a singer and actor. The band has changed a lot over the years but the current Radio Kalahari Orkes (RKO) consists of Frizo Woudstra (guitar, lead and rhythm), Wynand Davel (violin), Bradley Cooper (drums), Alicia van Dyk (accordion, recorder and vocals), Barry Steenkamp (base guitar) and Ian Roberts (lead singer). After five years, the group finally released their brand new album, Mamba and fans are ecstatic. We were recording the song Ja Jy in our studio in Slangfontein and were playing around with a few names for the album. We actually had the name of some South African politician in mind but just then this big mamba came through the glassless window and looked straight at us. It got dead quiet in the studio and the voice of the farmer who was on the line with his request echoed through the hanging headphones. After what felt like an hour, the mamba sailed over Bradley s old tekkies and disappeared. We just knew there and then, we needed to call the album Mamba, Ian explains. They released the album independently and Ian says it took some time to raise the necessary money to do so. He describes the album as a mix between some of RKO s old material mixed in with a lot of new material and says it took an entire year to put together. Rian Malan, Dan Roberts and Ian were responsible for writing most of the material on the album and they even roped in the help of Jaco van der Merwe from Bittereinder. The inspiration comes from a place that no one can really understand. It s a gift. The muse only comes to the writer when she wants to and we are always very grateful when she arrives, Ian says. With the band not all being together all the time it can get hard to practice together. We practice where and whenever we can, especially when we re on tour, Ian says. We had to ask: doesn t it get difficult when so many personalities and people have to work together so closely? Look, musicians always have to find a way to make themselves heard. With RKO it s the same. But one thing is certain we stand together on stage. One for all. All for one. There is only one lady in the group. Alicia is the most decent of all of us, except when it comes to politics. She s the editor of the Radio Kalahari news desk. She is highly qualified and got training from Rian Cruywagen. She recently showed her stealth by declaring live on air that sport and politics do not mix. Sport and politics are like paraffin and water. They don t mix. Shame, she said. Their brand new music video for the hit Bobbejaanvlei is also in circulation and was shot based on the paintings by the American artist Norman Rockwell. Look out for Ian s three Bellini guitars that make their debut in the video. The unique guitars were made in Pinetown, Natal during the 60s and 70s. They are made from plywood and have a very interesting sound. They are unique and form a very important part of the history of music in South Africa. I installed pickups and now they are super-duper pudding and pie, Ian says. For now Radio Kalahari Orkes spend about three months of the year on the road touring for their new album. We can t wait to see them live in action in the capital soon. Compiled by: Mariëtte van Niekerk Images: Dan Roberts. 12 Get It Pretoria June17 June 17 Get It Pretoria 13 Ian Roberts Frisco Woudstra

Spoil Dad with a veggie planter Have some fun with the kids and make Dad a special Father s Day gift. 3 Next, layer the plastic sheeting inside the built box, ensuring the edges of the sheeting stay within the planter. 5 4 Small holes need to be cut in the base of the sheeting. This needs to be done where there are gaps in the wood, for easy drainage. 6 A dad is a son s first hero and a daughter s first love. He is the one who picks you up, brushes you off and lets you try again. It takes a special someone to be a dad to look up to. What better way to celebrate Dad this Father s Day than by getting him outside in the sunlight with the kids? This planter is a great way to spend Father s Day with the kiddies, getting them to plant yummy veggies and give Dad some extra love! The planter is a perfectly simple gift to give Dad an excuse to take a break from his usual fatherly duties - like hogging the TV remote - and let his green thumbs get to work. THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL NEED: - Some wooden planks, as follows: 10 x 54.5cm slats, 6 x 34.5cm slats 4 x 22cm x 3.9cm square wooden batons - Hammer - Nails - Plastic sheeting - Scissors - Drainage stones - Potting mix - Seedling growing mix - Bonemeal - Vegetable seedlings (we used pak choi and baby cabbage) - Tubtrug/bucket or wheelbarrow - Decorative rocks (optional) Then, pour in a 1cm layer of drainage stones on top of the sheeting, to aid drainage. 7 Fill a trug or bucket with potting mix, followed by your choice of seedling growing mix and then some bonemeal for a good source of protein and phosphorous for your plant friends. 8 HERE S WHAT TO DO: 1Before buying wooden planks or cutting them yourself, remember the size of the planks very much depends on what size veggie box you would like to make. Choose seedlings that are appropriate for small-size plantings if you make a smaller sized planter box. Start 2by knocking the pieces of wood together with nails. This should be done very carefully - so Mum and Dad please take the lead here! Leave a few spaces in the bottom for drainage. You will need four long planks at the bottom and three on both the left and the right as side panels. Three shorter planks need to be fastened on both ends to make the end panels. Place one baton in each corner to complete the box and nail that in. Mix this all together and pour the mixture into the planter box, filling it to about three quarters of the way to the top. 9 Get creative and start decorating the planter box with some small rocks, and give the plants a nice water. Finally, it s time to plant! Space the plants out evenly, giving them room to grow. 10 The veggie box is now ready to give to Dad, for the best Father s Day spoil. PREPARE for winter hibernation Cosy, warm, snuggly and toasty are all words used to describe winter and we can t think of a better place to be than at home with a steaming cup of coffee.to help you create the perfect sanctuary we asked the interior team at Incanda Furniture to share some easy-to-follow tips. ADD SOME TEXTURE We re talking leather, studs, wool, interesting stitching and different kinds of material. Whether you love leather upholstered furniture or are more of a wood fan, make sure to mix and match when creating your style. Items of texture will undoubtedly not only be pleasing to the eye but also to the touch. Round mirror with its leather strap. Details: R3 550, www.dark-horse. co.za. For extra comfort, add a couple of cushions. Cityscape scatter cushion. Details: R199, Woolworths. Kassa knit throw from Country Road, R1 399. SOFT LIGHT As the sun draws dim during the winter months and night creeps in earlier, cleverly placed lamps throughout the house are extremely effective in creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Natural small belly basket. Details: R299, www.superbalist.co.za. Zebra printed leather rug, R6 599, Zara Home. NATURAL ELEMENTS In addition to larger, appealing furniture pieces that help bring the outside indoors, homey more natural and handcrafted items made from natural materials make for wonderful accents and focus points when placed discreetly around the home. Be inspired by nature Winter does tend to strip nature of its lushness for a while, but that is no reason to deprive yourself of the revitalising effect of greenery especially as you embark on a period of reflection in preparation for the new. Wisely chosen indoor plants, décor and furniture items in a range of bright to subdued greens are easily available and perfect to help add a touch of nature to your indoor sanctuary. For the more daring, wallpaper or curtaining is also an option. Artificial plant in a cement pot. Details: R260, Woolworths. Lattice ceramic jar. Details: R699, David Jones. Because anyone can be a food purveyor When it comes to great places to eat, Pretorians are spoiled for choice. We ve got all the food you can possibly imagine. Yet, from time to time we discover something new - a hidden gem if you will. Something like La Coco C Food Purveyors in Shere. Nestled in the heart of Shere, sits the quaint little restaurant La Coco C Food Purveyors. When you first walk through the door you are transported to a corner café somewhere in Europe. Complete with umbrellas and pots of home-grown herbs in the windowsills. Stacked on the shelves all across the walls are rows upon rows of delicious treats. Jams, sauces, spices, juices, the list goes on and on. Each yummier than the other. Looking at the menu we are spoiled for choice. We can t choose. There s an Acai surprise bowl, pancakes (gluten and diary free), a strawberry biltong salad, even an Italian meatball wrap. Then there are the shots. Yes, shots healthy ones. Think apple cider, vinegar, honey, ginger and cinnamon or ginger, lemon and cayenne pepper. They also serve freshly pressed juices; pressed fresh every morning. And the best part, you can even buy the juice as part of a one or three day detox programme. We re definitely giving it a go. So where did the La Coco C Food Purveyors journey start? For owner Jeanine Claassen, her dream of starting her own business started when she worked as an au pair in America after she finished school. The family I worked for travelled extensively and I was fortunate enough to visit lots of restaurants in places like New York. It was there that I realised I loved food, Jeanine explains. Her love of food led to her making and selling home-made brownies. 28 Get It Pretoria June 17 When I got back to South Africa in 2010, I realised brownies weren t as big here as they were in New York. So I decided to make jars with basic ingredients and sell them. Buyers only had to add milk and eggs and bake them, she adds. It was at that point she stumbled upon a new development and decided there and then she wanted to open a shop there selling brownies. But, it took two years to complete the new centre and in that time her vision for her shop changed to a restaurant with healthy eating options. Each year I try and go back to New York to see what the latest food trends are and I have noticed that South Africans are catching on to the gluten free, vegan lifestyle that is all the craze in the States, Jeanine says. In 2015 she finally opened La Coco C Food Purveyors to the public and it was everything she imagined. Cosy and intimate, where customers become regulars and then become family. It s a place where we know our customers by name, Jeanine says. She s always been a big foodie and says she must have inherited her love of food from her parents. Both love to cook and her dad is a farmer in the Kalahari. I love cooking and on the farm I learnt the importance of quality food. Free range chicken and beef is just so much healthier than when the meat is filled with all kinds of hormones. When it comes to her menu, Jeanine believes the healthier the better. Because we are so small we can buy from the farmers directly and our produce is as fresh as can be. We get products from across the country, even from as far as Vergelegen and Vryburg, Jeanine says. After browsing the shelves we finally sit down to order a chicken burrito bowl and a sweet potato and chickpea coconut curry. We decide to wash it down with a glass of Recharge juice and a Vital Signs smoothie. And, man oh man! Delicous! The portions are big and there is something for every taste. Our menu has something for everyone: bacon and eggs for farmers like my dad who like an old- fashioned breakfast, healthier protein options for the gym junkies and off course, vegan food, the 27-year old entrepreneur says. La Coco C Food Purveyors is a firm favourite among cyclists in the Shere area. They serve the best coffee in town and if you are feeling a bit daring, the Yellow or Beetroot lattes are definitely a must. Oh, and what is coffee or tea without something sweet? Their carrot cake is among the best in the city and if you are looking for a healthier option, they have the most delicious vegan brownies. My hope is that more South Africans will begin to support smaller restaurants and that more entrepreneurs will start smaller businesses. My small business started with brownies, hence the name La Coco C Food Purveyors C is for chocolate. My dream is to inspire others to do the same, she says. As someone told Jeanine once: Do what you want to do and stay true to who you are. TODAY S CUSTOMER HAS AN INSATIABLE, GROWING APPETITE FOR NUTRITIOUS, DELICIOUS FOOD AND DRINKS. WE STRIVE TO SATISFY THIS DEMAND, PROVIDING OUR GUESTS WITH AN EXTRAORDINARY HEALTH EXPERIENCE UNLIKE ANY THEY VE EVER TASTED.
