BERENGO STUDIO AND FONDAZIONE BERENGO Berengo Studio and Fondazione Berengo close 2018, a year that was filled with new projects and new collaborations together with old artists and new contemporary artists who approach the world of glass for the first time. Ai Weiwei, Thomas Schütte, Monica Bonvicini, Erwin Wurm, Jaume Plensa, and Vik Muniz began new projects with us. Our new artists include Francesco Clemente, Sebastian Brajkovic, Renate Bertlmann, and the young Swedish artist Åsa Jungnelius. Fondazione Berengo strengthened its bonds with Murano s glass traditions and contemporary art and design by sponsoring two new exhibitions: MEMPHIS - Plastic Field at the Palazzo Franchetti in Venice and LUX- LUMEN at the Berengo Exhibition Space on Murano. It promoted new initiatives with EIUC and Global Campus of Human Rights and presented a new edition of Glasstress. Curious? Leaf through the following pages and we ll tell you everything about a 2018 that s about to close and a 2019 that s about to begin! 2 1

GILDED CAGE, VENICE 24.05 25.11.2018 Directly from Central Park, New York, the monumental sculpture Gilded Cage by Ai Weiwei traveled to the garden of Palazzo Franchetti and for the first time visitors can enter and experience the power of this sculpture from inside the bars. The project was made possible with the support of Banca Mediolanum and Michael Frahm. During 2018, we traveled across the world to meet with him and plan new projects that we will announce soon. 3

LUIGI BENZONI Luigi Benzoni has returned to the furnace for new experimentations and to renew his most traditional sculptures. RENATE BERTLMANN Renate Bertlmann is the official artist for the Austrian Pavilion for the Art Biennale 2019. We re honored and proud to be with the Austrian Pavilion again with an extraordinary creative project in glass. MONICA BONVICINI IN VIENNA 31.08 04.11.2018 Monica Bonvicini opened All Day Night Smoke, a public installation located in Graben in Vienna. 4 Luigi Benzoni, Berengo Studio, Murano Adriano Berengo and Renate Bertlmann, Berengo Studio, Murano 5

A CASTING WORKSHOP ON MURANO The island of Murano is famous throughout the world for blown glass and solid glass crafting. In order to satisfy artists need for sculptural realism, we created a new experimental casting workshop to develop the technique of lost wax. This technique will allow us to create large-format artworks in glass that are as close as possible to the original models. FRANCESCO CLEMENTE, BETWEEN NEW YORK AND MURANO After a visit by Adriano Berengo to the New York studio of the painter Francesco Clemente, a major proponent of the Italian Transavanguardia movement, he pleasantly surprised us by visiting Murano with the goal of collaborating with us in the future. LAURE PROUVOST Once again we congratulate Laure Prouvost for being selected as the official artist for the French Pavilion this upcoming Art Biennale 2019, but above all for her marvelous wedding that we attended in France in July. NEW PROJECTS Fondazione Berengo in collaboration with the Gallerie degli Uffizi in Florence will hold an outdoor sculpture exhibition of Tony Cragg in the famous Giardino di Boboli, Florence, in the summer of 2019. In Wuppertal, director Eike Schmidt and sculptor Tony Cragg came up with fantastic ideas for the show. Her sculptures were presented at ArkDes, Stockholm, and are currently on display in Shanghai in an exhibition curated by Feng Boyi. HUMAN RIGHTS PAVILION: NEWS 06.10.2018 On October 6, 2018, Fondazione Berengo in collaboration with EIUC was pleased to host a charity event with world music, a dancer, and entertainment in the Sala del Portego of the Palazzo Franchetti. On this occasion, which was to support a pavilion for art involving human rights during the next Art Biennale in 2019, we officially announced that Koen Vanmechelen would be the curator. A small auction with artworks in glass donated by Berengo Studio was held to support the pavilion. EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS ON MURANO RIA LUSSI AT MACRO, ROME 16.05 25.11.2018 Thanks to the financial and logistic support of Berengo Studio, the Glass Art Society (GAS), an American not-forprofit association that promotes glass art across the world, was able to organize its annual conference for the first time on Murano. Fondazione Berengo presented an exhibition entitled LUX-LUMEN with Ai Weiwei, Song Dong, Yuichi Higashionna, Zaha Hadid, Richard Jolley, and others revisiting what for many is the genius loci of Venice, the chandelier. Hundreds of GAS members and visitors had access to this special installation of chandeliers which was designed by CONCEPTICON Studio. A special project by Han De Kluijver and an exhibition by neon glass artists, Vetro Illuminato, were also shown in the Berengo Exhibition Space on Murano. 16 Lively sculptures showing Giordano Bruno at different ages are the subject of Ria Lussi s new works for her artist residency at MACRO in Rome. She worked at the Berengo Studio furnace on Murano during the month of September. The exhibition was presented in collaboration with Memphis S.r.l. which produces the designs today in Milan. Carpets, ceramics, glass, silver works, and furniture all conceived by a group of designers including Ettore Sottsass, Michele de Lucchi, Matteo Thun, Peter Shire, and Nathalie du Pasquier. The show, concurrent with the Architecture Biennale, was curated by Jean Blanchaert and Adriano Berengo and the installation design was courtesy of IB Studio. Deyan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum in London, contributed to the project with an important scholarly text. 18 19

PAUL MCCARTHY IN LOS ANGELES We visited Paul McCarthy s studio in Los Angeles and showed the artist prototypes of his famous Trees in glass. MEXICO, MEXICO! Together with Mexican artists Francesco Toledo and Pedro Friedeberg, we finished several projects and planned new and exciting works for the upcoming year. MURANO MAGMA AT THE TEATRINO DI PALAZZO GRASSI, VENICE 21.07.2018 Fondazione Berengo took part in a conference on contemporary art and glass entitled Murano Magma at the Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi, an event conceived and realized by the artist duo Penzo+Fiore. The event was attended by curators, scholars, glass masters, and contemporary artists and featured discussions on crucial themes such as contemporary languages related to glass and the identity of Murano as an island of production. PENZO+FIORE Time, a work by Penzo+Fiore fabricated by Berengo Studio, is a chandelier/sculpture in which white glass was combined with wax and animal skulls to create a ritual object used by the artists in a performance by the same name held at the Galleria massimodeluca during Venice Glass Week 2018. The artists swung the work like a pendulum marking a countdown back from today to 1903, the year the oldest person still alive was born and junction between matter and time. The work was initially conceived for LUX-LUMEN. JAUME PLENSA A monumental work by Jaume Plensa and a new edition of sculptures saw light in 2018. The enormous work seen in the photo will be on display in 2019 at The Hague Museum, the Netherlands. RADICAL Fondazione Berengo will present a new exhibition series dedicated to experimental contemporary art. The project, directed by the artist duo Penzo+Fiore, will include a series of exhibitions with radical contents, entrusted to curators who read signs of contemporaneity with attention and rigor. The first show, Linea di principio, will be curated by Daniele Capra and offers a twin solo event by Nemanja Cvijanović and Giovanni Morbi, followed by works by Pietro Gaglianò and Matteo Bergamini. The exhibitions will alternate with encounters, seminars, and guided talks by the curators. ANDREA SALVADOR S MOSAICS Once again this year, the mosaic artist Andrea Salvador created a series of commissioned works and protraits, as the one shown in the picture.
