Out &About Pencil these events into your June diary right now! Park Acoustics is celebrating their 1 fourth birthday and to commemorate this special occasion they are hosting international synth-pop sensation St Lucia at the Voortrekker Monument on 1 June. St Lucia is the brainchild of South African-born, New York-based Jean-Philip Grobler. Apart from topping local charts, they ve been making waves in America and even appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Talk Show. Their dreamy and nostalgic sound is uplifting, joyful and the perfect soundtrack for this special occasion. The supporting line-up includes local favourites Jeremy Loops, Al Bairre, Tumi, The Brother Moves On, The December Streets and many more. Madiba: The African Opera, created by Unathi Mtirara, CEO of Opera South Africa, tells the remarkable story of South African icon Nelson Mandela. The journey begins in the village of Mqhekezweni a couple of years before his birth. It recounts his time in Mqhekezweni, when he left for Johannesburg and the later years when he married Winnie Madikizela. Other important moments include when Madiba was sentenced to life in prison and became the first black president of South Africa. Madiba: The African Opera runs from 23 May until 1 June at the State Theatre. Review VIEW GRACE OF MONACO This dramatic biopic focuses on legendary, Oscar-winning actressturned-princess Grace Kelly (Nicole Kidman), who gave up her Hollywood career to marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco (Tim Roth) in April 1956. The film takes a look at the period in her life from December 1961 to November 1962, during which time she played a major role in helping her husband settle a serious dispute between France and Monaco. Set in 1962, six years after her celebrated wedding of the century, this is an intimate snapshot of a year in the life of the twentieth century s most iconic princess, as she strives to reconcile her past and her present with her newfound role of mother of two and monarch of a European principality. Don t miss it! READ WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS Amber Whittington-Jones is dying of cancer. Fotograaf: Alicia Lewis. Grimering: Madeleine Botha, www.makeupbymb.co.za. Plek: Rosemary Hill, www.rosemaryhill.co.za Dit is n grou, mistroostige dag. Die snerpende wind huil om die hoeke van die sjarmante bruidsuite by die natuurskone Rosemary Hill waar Charlize Berg besig is om voor te berei vir haar Get It voorbladfotosessie. Alhoewel dié fyn blondekop n goor virus onder lede het, meen sy vasbeslote vanwaar sy kalm in die grimeerstoel sit, the show must go on. Dit is ongelooflik, ek is steeds gobsmacked hieroor. Nes Cher of Celine Dion. June 14 Get It Pretoria 15

It s the ultimate adrenaline rush. My geloof is vir my baie belangrik.

GET Hitched Bowled over The Unlimited Titans head coach Rob Walter and all-rounder David Wiese recently popped the big question to the loves of their lives. Natashia Slabbert talks to these two talented sportsmen and their other halves about wedding bells, balancing cricket and family life and why the gentleman s game has become such an excellent form of entertainment. My first impression was that she was the best addition to the Cricket South Africa staff for some time 18 Get It Pretoria June 14

Text: Natashia Slabbert. Photographer: Alicia Lewis Head coach Rob Walter and fiancée Heather Howie What were your first impressions of each other? We met while I was working as the Proteas strength and conditioning specialist and Heather was working for Cricket South Africa. I saw Heather for the first time when the Proteas met President Zuma before going to the World Cup. My first impression was that she was the best addition to the Cricket South Africa staff for some time; she doesn t even remember seeing me. How did you pop the question? Any dates for the wedding yet? We were away for the weekend at Elements Private Golf Reserve, I guess anywhere where you have the bush and a golf course is the perfect setting for a proposal. It includes each of our favourite pastimes, so it felt like the perfect place to ask her to be my wife. Trying to find a date for the wedding that accommodates the cricket is quite tricky; potentially sometime in August. Ideally it would be near the sea or bush with a golf course in close proximity. Rob, what are some of the highlights of your career thus far? I joined The Unlimited Titans in 1999 as their fitness trainer and after a year, I realised that coaching people was my passion. In 2009 I was approached by Mickey Arthur to join the Proteas and in the same week was asked to join the Delhi Daredevils for the IPL in South Africa. It was an amazing week in my life and blessed me with experiences over the next five years that I never in my wildest dreams thought I would have. My standout highlight, apart from meeting Heather, of course, was the Test Series wins with the Proteas in England and Australia. The test match at Lords where we beat England to become the number one test team in the world was the best game of cricket that I have been involved in. More recently, receiving the phone call from Jacques Faul to offer me the job of head coach of the Titans was a moment I will never forget, and then winning our first trophy, albeit shared with the Cobras, in the Momentum Cup. As the head coach of The Unlimited Titans, you probably have to travel a lot. How do you balance the time spent away from home with family life? Fortunately for us, we started dating when I was with the Proteas, travelling with the national side and involved in the IPL, which is way more hectic than the domestic travel I do now. I guess it s something you get reasonably accustomed to, but naturally we still miss each other when we are apart. Heather travels to all the Proteas games in South Africa because of her job, so for now it seems as though the roles have reversed slightly. Heather, as the sponsor services manager at Cricket SA and the fiancée of the The Unlimited Titans head coach, is it safe to say that you love cricket? I am a huge fan of cricket and enjoy watching and participating in most sports. I grew up in a sports-mad family, so I didn t really have a choice. As far back as I can remember, my weekends were spent at home with the cricket or some other sport playing in the background. I ve worked in cricket for over 10 years now and love it, but never thought this is where I would end up. I studied a BCom degree and pictured myself in a regular nine to five job, Monday to Friday in the corporate world, but got caught up in the sports marketing industry by chance and have never looked back. It certainly led to me meeting the man of my dreams. Cricket is most definitely not just an international sport, it s also a fantastic form of entertainment. What s your view on this? There is no doubt that cricket is entertaining, with the cricketers being the actors and entertainers. T20 cricket in particular has become popular as a form of entertainment and the huge crowds at these games bear testament to that. Personally, I favour the longer format of the game. A test match between two quality cricket teams is as good a form of entertainment as you can possibly get. Apart from planning a wedding, are there any other exciting plans for you two as a newly engaged couple in the year ahead? Rob is off to work with the Delhi DareDevils for a couple of months and we re also looking at buying a home for us to settle into once we re married, which is very exciting. So there is plenty of change ahead and we can t wait. All-rounder David Wiese and fiancée Chene Smith David, when did you first realise you wanted to spend the rest of your life with Chene? In 2009, when The Unlimited Titans had their first annual charity ball. We were still friends, but I asked her to accompany me, as I enjoyed spending time with her. As the evening progressed, I was reminded of how beautiful she was and noticed how easily she was able to interact and be genuinely friendly with everyone. It was then that I realised I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. How did you pop the question? I took her to a beautiful place called The Shepherd s Tree. It s a private game lodge in the Pilanesberg that neither of us had been to before. I wanted us to share a new experience together. After a game drive and sundowners, I arranged a private dinner in our executive suite on the balcony overlooking the Pilanesberg. She had no idea what was going on. As she walked in, I was waiting at our table decorated with lit candles and rose petals. I went down on one knee and asked her to marry me. June 14 Get It Pretoria 19

GET Hitched What are some of the highlights of your career thus far? I ve been playing for The Unlimited Titans for about five years and in this time I ve had many highlights, including winning trophies for all three formats, scoring a century and taking seven wickets in a first-class debut. My top moment, however, was getting the call to represent my country and making my debut for the Proteas against Sri Lanka in August last year. As a professional sportsman you probably have to travel a lot. How do you balance spending time away from Chene in your relationship? It is difficult being away from home so much. Chene travels with me as often as she can, but if we re apart, we ll text, phone or talk on Skype every day. It s tough, but luckily we both have strong and independent personalities. Chene, tell us a bit more about yourself. Were you always a fan of cricket? I was born and raised in Pretoria. I now work at Anglo American Kumba Iron Ore in Centurion. I m also a professional dancer; I ve represented South Africa at the World Championships and dance for the Blue Bulls rugby team, which I really enjoy. When I have time, I like to watch David s cricket matches and learn more about the sport. I have to admit, I didn t know much about cricket when I first met him, but I m learning more and more each time I watch one of his games. I now love cricket meeting David has turned me into a fan of the sport. Cricket is definitely not just an international sport, it s a fantastic form of entertainment. What is your view on this? With the initiative of Pro20 cricket, the entertainment value has really gone up over the past few years. You now get a mix of dancers, fireworks and even top local bands entertaining people at a game. I think it is a fantastic way to spend some time outdoors and enjoy all the various forms of entertainment with your friends while watching top-class cricket. What are some of your favourite Pretoria spots? We enjoy going out and having something to eat at Tasha s, Crawdaddy s or any other place that has really good food and a great wine selection. GET The natural look Shades of chic Whether concealing imperfections or emphasising your best features, make-up is many a gal s best friend. We bring you the hottest trends from fashion weeks across the globe, as well as insider tips from well-known Pretoria make-up artist, Jolanda Bedeker. Flawless coverage A painting is only as good as its canvas. That s why most artists worth their salt usually start by finding the ideal canvas before starting work on the actual masterpiece think Michelangelo s Sistine Chapel. Likewise, when it comes to make-up, we need to ensure we have the perfect canvas to work on before we can start painting our faces. Therefore, apart from having a good skincare routine, it s crucial that we use the correct foundation type and shade. According to professional style and make-up artist Jolanda Bedeker, owner of the MUD (Make Up Designory) showrooms in Pretoria, our foundation usually needs to change as the season changes. Women should preferably switch to a lighter shade of foundation, as their skin isn t exposed to the sun as often in colder months. Remember to choose a shade that is as natural-looking as possible. The fresh-faced look was a huge hit at this year s winter/autumn fashion shows less is definitely more. Colour me perfect When it comes to decorating the proverbial windows to our soul, we are well and truly spoilt for choice, especially in the colour department. This season is no different, with a beautiful array of vibrant colours such as berries and pinks, and smoky blues and silvers making their appearance. However, these unusual shades don t suit every eye colour and it s advisable to apply only the colours that work well with your own eye colour. When choosing the right shade to match your eye colour, Jolanda suggests the following; Green eyes look great with mauve or purple shades, blue eyes work well with shades of brown, taupe and camel, and wine colours or charcoals like pomegranate usually complement any eye colour. Luckily, classic favourites like nudes are also trending this winter. According to Jolanda, nude eyeshadow colours like taupe and wheat are suitable shades for any eye colour. Paired with pitchblack eyeliner and ruby-red lips, it creates the perfect Audrey Hepburn look. Jolanda Bedeker, owner of the MUD showrooms in Pretoria Text: Natashia Slabbert. Images supplied by MUD

Larger-than-life lashes Most of us wouldn t dare step out of the house without wearing mascara, even if it s just for a quick trip to the deli down the road. Whether it is to define or lengthen our lashes, a great mascara is a must for any make-up bag. Larger-than-life lashes are all the rage this winter. Apply three or four layers of mascara to give depth and to create the false lash effect. Just make sure you brush out the lashes and let the mascara dry properly before each application to avoid clumping, Jolanda suggests. For longer-lasting mascara, look for products that are waterresistant. Another wildly popular winter trend for the eyes, as spotted on international catwalks, is the feline look. This va-va-voom look is easily created with liquid eyeliner in black or bright blue applied in an upward slant from the outer corner of the eye. Barely there beauty The minimalists among us will be happy to hear that the barely there look is quite popular this season, so no need to go all out with bold, bright red cheeks. Jolanda s number one tip when it comes to blusher is to look for a colour that suits both your lipstick and skin type. Blusher is a great way to give yourself that hollow-cheek effect. With regard to flawless application, Yolanda advises a three-step approach to blusher. Shading and contouring provide your face with shape and colour. Create a hollow cheek by first applying bronzer under your cheekbones, then colour in the cheekbones. Lastly, apply a pale yellow cheek colour in a triangle under and above the eye to lift the cheekbones. Be brave Nude lips paired with dark, smoky eyes, as well as lips in shades of orange and red, are firm favourites at the moment. Blondes and redheads look fabulous with orange shades, while brunettes and blondes stand out from the crowd with reds. Bright lips make a huge statement, if you are brave enough, encourages Jolanda. We agree. Go on, dare to be bold this winter. June 14 Get It Pretoria 25

GET Styling Red-hot winter wardrobe Waterkloof Ridge s Anja Cruse-Bothma, celebrity stylist and personal shopper, reveals five simple steps to getting a red-hot winter wardrobe. By Natashia Slabbert Anja Cruse-Bothma Pretoria s Anja Cruse-Bothma, owner of istyle! image consultancy and the official stylist and personal shopper for ultra-glam fashion boutique D Ore in Sandton, believes that if you look good, you ll feel fabulous too. Anja, who has dressed celebrities such as Jen Su and Jeannie D, among others, is convinced that confidence and selfbelief can turn any woman s world around and having a trendy winter wardrobe is just the place to start. 1 Good riddance Revamping your wardrobe might seem like a daunting task at first, but the first step to getting a fabulous winter wardrobe is throwing out the old before adding anything new. This is not the time to be sentimental. If it s been at the back of your closet for a couple of winters without once seeing the light of day, it has reached its expiry date. It s important to go through your wardrobe. If you haven t worn something during the last two to three years, get rid of it. From there you can update your wardrobe with new, fashionable items, Anja says. 2 Bare essentials Kick off your new winter 2wa wardrobe with a few key items. According to Anja, this season s must-have fashion items are a pair of flat, knee high boots in black, a good quality trench coat in a neutral colour, scarves in various colours to brighten up any outfit, and anything in leather. Her personal fashion favourites for this season are her Hunter boots and Vanessa G trench coat. I m a mommy with a dangerous shoe obsession. So it s important for me when I spend time with my two-year-old daughter to be able to run around with her while still looking stylish. That is why I love my boots, I can dress them up or down, and run around in them. My trench coat is simply a masterpiece and is equally suitable for wearing at night or during the day. 3 Step out of the safe zone The next step is clever shopping. Although a favourite pastime for most women, shopping has its fair share of pitfalls, especially when a discount sale or two gets thrown into the mix. Anja urges shoppers to be cautious when it comes to sales. If you see something on sale that you won t pay full price for, you probably don t need it. The same goes for repeat buying. When women get into their safe zone they tend to buy the same items over and over because they know that they work. Unfortunately, they end up not wearing most of the items, she explains. Instead of sticking it out in the safe zone, be adventurous and try some new styles. 4 Stick to quality Another crucial aspect to having a red-hot winter wardrobe is sticking to good-quality buys. Quality is essential if you want your fashion items to last the season and still look good. Luckily, high quality doesn t necessarily mean breaking the bank, as the most expensive brand won t always translate to being Anja-Cruse Bothma, www.i-style.co.za. Photographer: Michelle Wastie. Fashion items are available at Nadine in Woodlands Boulevard

the most reliable one. With so much variety on offer, it s as easy as shopping around until you find a brand that both delivers and suits your pocket. Don t be tempted to update your wardrobe with fashionable items that cost too much, rather invest in reasonably-priced, highquality items with a good fit. 5 Complementary colours Keep your finger on the fashion pulse and incorporate some of the latest trends. When it comes to colour trends, Anja suggests opting for shades that complement your skin tone. Hot trends to look out for this winter are dark and sombre shades like grey, burgundy and moss green, as well as lighter accents like pastel mint green, light blue and blush pink. These colours will carry through to spring, before it goes brighter again for summer, says Anja. And the main colour for this season? Navy which is the new black. Other spot-on trends to look out for are monochrome (black and white) patterns, houndstooth, stripes, and the mesh effect. This season s trends also include leather, tartan and block heels. I m completely obsessed with leather. And, although the block heel is not always flattering on everyone, it s quite comfortable and adds a little extra stability when walking in heels. GET Decadent Sinfully sweet Winter s chill is the perfect excuse to indulge in sweet treats. Inge Newport, owner of The Cake Cartel catering company, shares some of her favourite recipes with us. Inge Newport s love for baking was nurtured by her European roots. Being brought up in a largely European household by my Dutch mother and British father, life and food was always an exciting journey for me. Being able to see and experience cakes, pastries and chocolate from Europe since I was a little (and not so little) girl, has nurtured a healthy respect for this art in my life. Inge explains that her passion for baking comes straight from her heart and that she enjoys experimenting to improve her culinary skills. I am constantly looking for new ideas, techniques and recipes, and nothing puts a smile on my face more than seeing the amazing creative potential in cake and pastry making. Baking is more than a hobby for me, it is part of my life and identity. 18 Get It Pretoria June 28
