Our Philosophy... REAL BEEF BULLS = REAL PROFITABILITY In production agriculture we are always looking for ways to increase profitability. Most of the time, without weighing the cost, cattlemen automatically assume more growth is the only answer. Is that always an economically sustainable path? Analysis suggests that while both production (weight) and price do impact profit, they are much less important in determining producer profitability than cost. (K State) For the last several years, improving economic profitability has been a much debated topic in the cow calf industry especially when we encounter droughts, market pull backs, environmental issues, etc. Regardless of market conditions, lower inputs will increase profit potential. Genetic selection emphasizing fertility, fleshing ability, soundness, longevity, and appropriate mature size will significantly lower inputs. This has always been our philosophy at P+. The two largest annual expenses for a cow calf operation are feed cost and cow replacement cost. Maintenance feed cost of the cow herd and cow replacement cost typically account for over 75% of the total annual production cost. Therefore selecting genetics that require less feed and stay in the herd longer is economically vital to increasing profitability. The purpose of P+ bulls is to make cows. Our mating decisions have always been focused on making the next generation of females more efficient and productive cows than their mothers. Additionally we are striving for quicker more efficient growth that won t negatively impact cow herd profitability. I often tell people breeding cattle isn t complicated; if it were I couldn t do it! It s not rocket science. When you breed cattle that thrive and flesh easily on grass, they will do even better when finished on grain. What will not work is a set of cows that require more energy than your grass or environment will provide. We harvest several head of cattle each week sired by our bulls that consistently grade over 88% choice and prime. To put it simply, big ribbed, easy fleshing, heavy muscled Angus cattle can produce high quality beef on grass or grain. Buy bulls that make cows and I guarantee you will increase profitability.
