#visitlinz LINZ CHANGES GROUPS EXPERIENCE THE FUTURE IN THE UNESCO City of Media Arts DISCOVER UNIQUE CULTURE on the Danube 2019 EDITION www.linztourismus.at/groups Incredibly contemporary, Upper Austria 1

In Linz on the Danube, culture meets vitality Linz on the Danube really is for anyone who is open to new experiences and lives in the here and now. The unique character of the city is just waiting to be discovered. The strength of the river and the easy-going nature of the city s inhabitants exist side by side. The vibrant museums and the historical Old Town perfectly complement each other because of their differences. Almost as surreal are the boat trips along the harbour s metre-high graffiti artworks or the industrial tours. These experiences, in all their diversity, encapsulate Linz. Just immersing yourself in this atmosphere once will be enough to have you coming back to the city for years to come. Linz changes is not just an empty phrase: the city in the centre of Upper Austria is always reinventing itself, while at the same time remaining authentic and looking towards the future. An important milestone in the city s development was its designation as Capital of Culture 2009 2019 is the tenth anniversary of this event. Linz is also proud to hold the title of UNESCO City of Media Arts, something which visitors can really experience when they re here. The fact that the city also engages with the past in a contemporary manner and translates this into the present led the European Commission to further acknowledge Linz in 2018 with the European Smart Tourism Award in the Cultural Heritage & Creativity category. This just goes to show that another of Linz s strengths is making historical cultural heritage accessible through creative approaches. Explore Linz together Organising a group trip to the city of the future really is the epitome of the zeitgeist. The diversity, short distances and authentic experiences will excite all those taking part. They will be surprised and amazed. And, thus, you will remember your group trip to Linz for a long time, with all its culture and incredible moments. 2

Experience the future in Linz today At first glance, it is a former industrial city, at second glance an exciting metropolis of culture; you will be full of curiosity and anticipation before your visit, and a surprising passion for the city after your trip: all of this, and more, awaits you in Linz, where the future is already here. If it is your first time in the city, let yourself be carried away by the open atmosphere of the city centre, by the buildings from a huge variety of eras, by the diverse cultural offerings and by the Danube, which is a part of Linz now more than ever. What sets this city apart from others is its character and its constant evolution. A particular turning point was 2009, when Linz became the European Capital of Culture. The list of new openings around that time is impressive, from the Schlossmuseum to the voestalpine Stahlwelt, the Ars Electronica Center and the Pöstlingbergbahn Hauptplatz extension. Another legacy of Linz09 is the Musiktheater, which was opened in 2013 and is one of the most modern opera houses in Europe. The ideas, projects and initiatives from the Capital of Culture year still excite visitors and residents alike. Immerse yourself in the city of change In Linz, the banks of the Danube are a place of relaxation and culture: the green areas and restaurants invite you to linger during the day and at night the futuristic, illuminated façades of the museums are guaranteed to amaze. Equally impressive are the exhibitions, which range from the contemporary works in the Lentos Art Museum to the innovative developments and projects in the Ars Electronica Center. In the Museum of the Future, technological forward-thinking meets visionary media art. Further downstream in the industrial harbour is an art project of a different kind: Mural Harbor is Europe s largest graffiti and muralismo gallery with around 200 spray-painted works along the harbour. And in the nearby industrial area the voestalpine Stahlwelt offers a unique look behind the scenes. Although its constant change and forward-looking nature are what give Linz its identity, people are always the central focus in the UNESCO City of Media Arts. Anyone who is curious and open will have an unforgettable time in the city on the Danube, enjoy new experiences and see for themselves the change which characterises this city. 4

05 The Danube in Upper Austria The Danube bend at Schlögen WGD Donau Oberösterreich Tourismus GmbH/Hochhauser The Danube in Upper Austria The Danube one of Europe s greatest storytellers flows leisurely along, telling tales of times long ago, of powerful rulers and the local inhabitants wealth of legends and myths. The Danube knows so many of the stories that have shaped the land and its people since they came into being. There is much to discover in the Upper Austrian section of the river: the Danube traveller enjoys breathtaking views, walks legendary trails, explores the beautiful river landscape on the Danube Cycle Path, experiences the countryside rolling by from a boat and samples culinary delicacies. DANUBE CULTURE DANUBE BOAT TRIP The great river connecting Europe was and is used primarily as a transport route, not only for the conveyance of people and goods, but also for the exchange of culture and language. By exploring the Roman sites along the Danube, you get an idea of the significance the Danube had for the Romans as the natural border of the Danube limes. When the church was reorganised after the Roman period, numerous monasteries and abbeys were built by the Danube. With the Habsburg Monarchy, the Danube region enjoyed what was surely its most glorious time of prosperity. Empress Sisi, in particular, indulged her love of travelling by taking frequent trips along the Danube and she began her bridal journey by boat from Passau to Vienna. You can reach the opposite bank in a leisurely manner on board one of the Danube boats. Various stages on the Danube Cycle Path or the Donausteig hiking trail can also be covered by boat. THE DANUBE BEND AT SCHLÖGEN The Danube bend at Schlögen is an archetypal meander. Here, the Danube makes two truly spectacular changes in direction. It s worth stopping and going to the viewpoint on foot. A short walk takes you through the forest, after which you ll be rewarded with an unobstructed view of this fascinating spectacle of nature. DANUBE CYCLE PATH The famous Danube Cycle Path runs along the great river from Germany through Austria and on to Hungary. Cyclists can look forward to a peaceful, romantic and yet varied cycle path from Passau to Grein via Linz along the Upper Austrian section of the Danube. www.donauradweg.at DONAUSTEIG Over 450 km and 23 stages, the Donausteig hiking trail runs from Passau to Grein via Linz. On both sides of the Danube, the hiking trail, which was awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal, provides breathtaking views of and perspectives on the great river and the unique landscape through which it flows. www.donausteig.com WGD Donau Oberösterreich Tourismus GmbH/Hochhauser You can find the group offers of the Upper Austrian Danube region at: www.donauregion.at/gruppen Contact WGD Donau Oberösterreich Tourismus GmbH Lindengasse 9, 4040 Linz Tel. +43 732 7277 800, Fax +43 732 7277 804 info@donauregion.at, www.donauregion.at 18

FLORIAN www.stift-st-florian.at The Augustinian Priory of St. Florian is a place of fellowship and devotion, and, at the same time, a cultural focal point for the region. It was in this ecclesiastical community that Bruckner immersed himself deep in the world of music, first as a choirboy and later as an organist. It was here that he perfected his organ playing and created his first large-scale compositions. And it was here, in the vault beneath the organ, that he found his final resting place. Bruckner Organ at St. Florian Master organ builder Franz Xaver Krismann began building the Anton Bruckner Organ in 1770 in the artist s honour. Over the course of time, it was enlarged and now comprises 4 manuals, 103 stops and 7,386 organ pipes. Tours of the Priory 1 May 13 Oct. 19 daily at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm. 08 Concert Halls and Theatres Brucknerhaus LIVA, kswfoto posthof LIVA BRUCKNERHAUS www.brucknerhaus.at Dietmar Kerschbaum, the new director, came to Linz in order to reposition the Brucknerhaus. This is why a lot has changed since the beginning of the 2018/19 season, including the programme. First and foremost, it adheres to the motto: Creed Denomination, Belief, Religion. That doesn t mean, however, that religious music is the only thing on offer. The programme is angled more towards the search for the traces of the divine in music this could be in a symphony, a sonata, a song, a string quartet or a jazz improvisation piece just as much as in Gustav Mahler s monumental 8th Symphony which requires eight solo singers as well as a large orchestra and three choirs. Markus Poschner will take to the conductor s podium of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz which will perform other symphonic masterpieces in spring 2019, such as Brahm s 4th symphony and, in its first European performance, the 5th Symphony, the Apocalyptic, by exiled Austrian Karl Weigl. Top international orchestras will also be giving guest performances in the Brucknerhaus, such as The Knights from New York, who will accompany the celebrated mandolin virtuoso, Avi Avital, or the Paris Orchestra, who will bring Benjamin Britten s pacifist War Requiem to life with Daniel Harding conducting. In the new subscriber series WortKlang, Burgtheater stars like Peter Matić, Peter Simonischek and Birgit Minichmayr will be honoured, and renowned pianists such as Rudolf Buchbinder and Martin Helmchen will also be guests in the Brucknerhaus. Their colleague Kit Armstrong will also feature in the same performance, in Saint-Saën s famous organ symphony, both as a pianist and as an organist this will surely be a sensational highlight of 2019 at the Brucknerhaus. Above all, the new organ, which was constructed in summer, is a particular focal point due to organ concerts by internationally renowned organists as well as the popular series Organ Music at Tea Time. 11 Mar. 2019, 7.30 pm Large Auditorium Branford Marsalis Quartet 14 Mar. 2019, 7.30 pm Middle Auditorium Peter Simonischek reads Joseph Roth s The Legend of the Holy Drinker, accompanied by film music from the 1930s. 29 Mar. 2019, 7.30 pm Large Auditorium The orchestra dances. 13 Contemporary History Contemporary History Museum voestalpine VOESTALPINE CONTEMPORARY HISTORY MUSEUM www.voestalpine.com/zeitgeschichte One step ahead is voestalpine s motto and philosophy. With this museum, the corporation takes a look back into its own history and thereby carefully and extensively explores the dark chapter of its early years. voestalpine is doing this out of responsibility for its own history and in the knowledge that only those who confront their pasts can also look towards the future. The museum is dedicated to the forced labourers who were made to work by the Nazis in Linz for the Reichswerke Hermann Göring AG Berlin. It stands for responsible interaction with the corporation s history and critically confronts this dark chapter of Austria s past.
