THE T.M.F.C. VISUAL ART AND ILLUSTRATION COLLECTIVE The TMFC (The Too Much Fun Club) is a Visual Art & illustration Collective based in Edinburgh with connections worldwide. We operate as a Consortium Cooperative to mutually nurture ourselves as a group and as individual artists. We also work as a Creative Network & Design Agency, producing work to a such a high level that it s let us develop ongoing working relationships with many of our clients, including Williams Bros Brewery, Red Bull, Kelburn Castle & Country Estate. The number of members and associate members of the collective is now approaching 30 and still growing rapidly, yet organically. With such a huge diversity of skills & styles from all these talented individuals the works of the group cover many forms of visual art. Murals, Illustration, Live Art, Installations & Exhibitions, Design, Fine Art, Photography, Animation, Projection Mapping, Digital Art, Branding & Concept Art, Live Visuals, Doodles, Sign Writing and Decor.

TMFC CULTURE

HISTORY OF THE TMFC Our foundations run deep, some of the artists in The TMFC have been collaborating with each other as far back as 2002. All the members of the collective have become involved due to a unified sense of creativity, art and culture. Most of our artists first worked together in 2007 and we have been steadily building our creative family since. We first became known around Edinburgh (and were named) in early 2009, for our live collaborative work, creating murals and artworks live at social events such as festivals, Art Battles, music performances & club nights. The backgrounds of our members stretch from Fine Art & Illustration graduates to professional Graphic Designers & Photographers, yet we have all found common ground in the growing Live Art movement.

THE TMFC VISION The members of The TMFC have a mutual interest in art forms such as Illustration, Street, Low Brow, Graffuturism, Comic & Manga. Yet we have found little stimuli in these principles locally, as a result we have found ourselves more and more taking action to build a scene of our own in Edinburgh. By doing things like street murals, exhibitions and art based club nights, we hope to not only develop the culture of the city but also establish ourselves as a local creative enterprise. One that likeminded artists can look to for collaboration, inspiration and potentially vocation. One of our goals in the next three years is to open a cafe/gallery/ shop selling our work and merchandise, we feel this would be of major cultural benefit to the city as we would exhibit work from, and create a connection to the art scenes in Brighton, Bristol, London and further afield. THE TMFC X LIVE ART In our mission to stay at the forefront of the Live Art movement, we are developing our live collaborative work to incorporate new technologies such as projection mapping & cutting edge animation techniques. Our coming projects are a totally fresh & unique form of visual art, featuring work that may change form depending on how it is lit or be both drawn and animated in front of your eyes...

CREATIVE PARTNERSHIPS KELBURN CASTLE & COUNTRY ESTATE WILLIAMS BROTHERS BREWERY STUDIO 24 NIGHTCLUB, EDINBURGH ELECTRICKAL SOUND SYSTEM The work we have done for several of our clients has been so well recieved it has led to a number of ongoing, creative working relationships. In these we have become the go-to people for any design or artwork the client needs doing. Above are a few of the companies we have been lucky enough to work with in this way.

THE TMFC PORTFOLIO

KELBURN CASTLE & COUNTRY ESTATE On the west coast of Scotland lies Kelburn Castle, famous for been painted from top to bottom by South American artists Os Gemeos, Nina & Nunca. The Estate plays host to several annual events, The Kelburn Garden Party; a boutique festival that takes place on the first weekend in July being the biggest. We create decor and live pieces at the events there, as well as festival branding & merchandise. We have worked on some of the permanent features of the estate, including a mural in the Secret Forest. We are currently planning an Art & Sculpture park as a permanent feature of the grounds.

WILLAIMS BROTHERS Wiallam s Brothers asked us to give some of their promotional material the TMFC treatment.

INN DEEP, GLASGOW These images show the large scale illustration we painted on the interior walls the Williams Brothers affiliated bar, Inn Deep in Glasgow.

STUDIO 24 One of the last independent nightclubs left in Edinburgh, Studio 24 on Calton Road is a venue with integrity and style. Early last year we painted the walls of the bar area as part of a Red Bull initiative, this began a series of work for the club, such as flyer design and decor. The venue has now become the home of most of The TMFC s events.

ELECTRIKAL SOUNDSYSTEM Local sound system and event organisers, Electrikal started doing things in Edinburgh round about the same time as we did and have become one of the biggest forces in the Scottish dance music scene. We have designed T-shirts & flyers for them and drawn live at countless nights they have put on. We are currently planning to paint the sound system itself and collaborate on several events this year.

CREW 2000 Crew 2000 is an Edinburgh based service giving advice about sexual health and drug awareness. We have created Live Art for them at several events where they have had information stalls. We recently designed the artwork for their website, mycrew.com.

BEES Bees is a local cafe bar which opened in 2012. We decorated both of the rooms in the bar in varying styles.

SPOON Illustration for the counter of this popular city cafe called spoon.

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH In 2012 we curated the painting of the re-branded Underground bar in the students union and painted a piece live at the launch.

STEAM PUNK COFFEE The TMFC was asked to create vinyl graphics for this new mobile coffee enterprise. It quickly turned into a full branding job once they seen our artwork which now appears on their 2 vans, packaging and website.

LIVE ART

WHAT IS LIVE ART? Though it is not a new thing for an artists to take their work directly to an audience as it is created, there is a global movement that has evolved recently with a unified thesis on its approach to the creation of art. This new movement is primarily concerned with the creation and execution of its artwork in front of an audience... Though in the past it has been referred to as Action Art, the term Live Art was first used in the 1980 s to establish a firm difference between itself and Performance Art, which was coined in the 70 s and usually contains dance and movement in the creation of the artwork. It has also been suggested that Live Art is not yet strictly a discipline in art, but more a strategy to include cultural processes and experimental practices that may be otherwise excluded by established curatorial and critical frameworks. Perhaps part of this ambiguity comes from the rawness of these processes and the delay in the critical calculation of art from artist to establishment. As the artist Joshua Sofaer puts it:...at its most fundamental, Live Art is when an artist chooses to make work directly in front of the audience in space and time. So instead of just making an object, or an environment (a painting for example) and leaving it for the audience to encounter in their own time, Live Art comes into being at the actual moment of encounter between artist and spectator. The aspect of Live Art we practice is akin to that which has been an influential element of Hip Hop culture since the 80 s and in the last ten years has become globally reinforced in its identity by organisations such as Secret Wars in London and Sketch The Rhyme in Sydney. The TMFC has largely been built on this practice, creating murals and artworks live, at all manner of events from company launches to art battles, festivals to shop installations. We enjoy the interaction of being part of a situation whilst creating the setting for that situation, as it is happening. The future of Live Art: Live Art is certainly growing in its scope and reputation as peoples social lives become more and more diversified, after all, why should it just be a music scene that hosts social events? Even within the music scene, things like Live Art, Projection Mapping and Live Visuals are rapidly becoming part of the remit to give people more of an enveloping experience when at an event. LIVE ART & THE TMFC With modern technology raising the bar on what is possible in this new discipline, The TMFC is now working on how to include and develop practices that will stun the viewer as they observe the creation of the final image.

SKETCH THE RHYME Sketch the Rhyme could well be called Hip Hop evolution, it is a highly entertaining live show combining Live Art, Hip Hop & audience participation. Each show consists of half a dozen or so games, these involve artists drawing pictures that are projected onto a screen, from which emcees have to freestyle the conclusion or narrative... For example, one of the games is effectively Hip Hop Pictionary. As the show progresses, it builds in its complexity to include game show style contests judged by audience response and even live animation narrated by the emcees. Started by Big Village, a team of artists and musicians from Syndey, Australia, Sketch the Rhyme came to Scotland on a world tour in August 2011. After doing the art for its premier in the Edinburgh Festival, we became the only crew outside of the originators permitted to use the format and name to recreate the show.

SECRET WARS Since it started in 2005 Secret Wars has quickly become a global phenomenon, pioneering Art Battles that involve artists or teams of artists creating live pieces on a large scale in a very short space of time. For example two individual artists might each have to create a picture on a 8x8 foot white board in 90 minutes, using nothing but black ink and with no corrections allowed. The winner is then picked by 2 judges and a crowd vote. With the tagline Go big or go home these battles require fast and accurate drawing and emphasise the competitive side of Live Art. During 2011 we were asked to nominate six of our artists to compete in the Glasgow heats of Secret Wars. Out of a total of 15 artists in the league, 3 of The TMFC made the quarterfinals, with one of our own been knocked out in the semis.

CLUBS AND GIGS During 2010 The TMFC was growing its reputation and Live Art became an amazingly useful tool for collaboration, communication, enjoyment and promotion. In that year we created live work at over 40 events. In the last two years we have been streamlining and perfecting our practices in the field. Here are a just few of the events we have featured at: AzTech/Terror/B-Sides/Unpeeled /Red Dog Music presents: The Dog /Big N Bashy Electrikal Presents /CIS/Kapital/Mobius/Black diamond Express/Cause It / Taste of Eden/Banana Sessions/Jeru the Damaja/Mr Scruff & many more...
