PRETORIA HOLIDAY PACKING It s never been this easy! SUMMER MUST-HAVES Brilliant beauty buys & tips GUILT-FREE COCKTAILS TOASTING TO THE NEW YEAR Charlize Berg HERE S TO 2018! SHOPPING, PEOPLE AND LIFESTYLE IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD December 2017 / January 2018

The earlier part of October 1987 Spring was everywhere in the air, in the birds, even in my father s step. It was a time of new beginnings. Mother Earth was awakening after a long winter rest. She took out her freshest fragrances and used it lavishly Vanilla Apple blossom was the scent she used in our garden. Horribly sweet, but deliciously so. The wide field, next door, had the scent of wild Days Eye and crushed herbs. Dad asked if I would like to come with him to his shop today. Climbing into his big car he allowed me to sit in front, his big helper. We drove on the dusty gravel road, I sneezed from the dust clouds. Finally, day break! It started with the sky glowing just a little bit brighter. With each turn of the wheel, light broke through a little bit more, like it was hatching from an egg. Suddenly the sky was crystal blue, a perfect day! Upon arrival at the door, we heard the Tring-Tring, Tring-Tring of the phone welcoming us. Dad was struggling with the keys, almost like fall wrestling with summer. Then, his face turned a light red colour and as the frustration grew, the red became brighter. Just before darkness struck, the key slipped in and the door opened. He ran for the phone but missed it! In those days we didn t have a call back option or true caller Inside were coins, gold coins, with a bearded man on it, and a few rolls of banknotes tied with rope. Dad had tears in his eyes. I don t think it s the rats fault. Joy, pure joy! The next morning Dad and I departured from our home. Outside, my dazed eyes were dancing to a rhythm that could only be their own. Up and down they swished, twirling round and round until they were dizzy little rows of white dresses. I marvelled at the miracles of nature and rejoiced. The car came to a standstill in front of a house where a woman expectedly stood on her stoep. Dad climbed out and handed her the wooden box. She slowly opened it. Her face was dressed with silver, gold and platinum sunshine with rubies for eyes. Then the diamond tears streamed down her face. She turned, fell to her knees and cried We are saved. As we drove home, all around me everywhere the whole world, was alive! The sky in its various spring shades, more vibrant and spectacular than you will ever find. Spring was here she was everywhere. That spring of October 1987 The Piano provided! 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 Avoid placing flower vases or pot plants on your piano. Do not place your piano on underfloor heating. Leave the piano keys uncovered, avoid using felt covers as it attracts moths. We highly recommend that a WS Pianos Specialist Key Cover is used. When cleaning ivory/plastic keys, use only a damp cloth. Seek expert advice if thorough cleaning is required. Keep your piano out of direct sunlight. To keep rats, mice and moths at bay, keep a couple of mothballs in a stocking and hang it inside the piano. Never place your piano under an air conditioner or next to a fireplace/ heater. All pianos should be tuned at least once a year. Pianos played more than 20 hours per week should be tuned more regularly. we had to hope that the person will call again. As the day progressed, I played in my Jungle of pianos you could see Dad was holding his breath waiting for the call. On our way back home, I asked: Daddy, did they call back? My question was answered with a sigh. Yes Werner. Concerned I then asked, Could you help them Daddy? Empathetically he smiled and said, I hope we can. He could see the question in my eyes and on my face and with a lump in his throat he said, The lady lost her husband, she and her children don t have any money for food, and, the bank wants to take their home. Silence - Dad looked sad. The dancing daisies weren t dancing anymore they just blew from side to side in the sad wind. Why Daddy, why? They can t do that, it s their home. That night it rained. The world was sad and darkness reigned. Days past One day Daddy came home after being out of town. I heard him and mother talking. He said he needed to work late to finish the piano, and she had to do marketing on the Schimmel upright. We needed to sell her quickly! The house was dark, the world was punishing all of us. I followed Dad to the workshop. He opened the piano and the smell of death hit us like a fist between the eyes! The smell was horrible and I wanted to puke. Suddenly, my father screamed! I could hear our not-so-light nanny running down the hallway on the wooden floors, like a thunderstorm approaching. The world was about to swallow us! If I didn t know any better, I would have thought the house was going to fall through the earth and we would emerge in China. I kneeled next to Dad. He showed me a box wrapped in plastic. The stench of dead rats burnt my eyes. He opened the box. 06 Get It Pretoria Dec 17 / Jan18 Review READ: TWO GREAT BOOKS FOR DECEMBER Oh heaven! The only book you need to take away to the coast this holiday is Marian Keyes The Break... almost 600 pages of pure, warm-hearted joy. Hugely funny, wildly romantic, it s the story of Amy and Hugh, who re taking a break. Not, as her friends task, a city-withfancy-food sort of break. Nope. Rather he s off to South East Asia for six months, and there are no rules. Which leaves Amy at home, with her extended (and wonderfully mad) family... and the decision of what s good for the goose is most certainly good for the gander. Witty, heartbreaking, believable. We re huge MK fans, and this is her at her absolute best. Fab! Details: Penguin. Normal price R290, Get It Book Club price R232 (simply visit www.knowledgeroad.co.za/ getitbookclub, sign up and order. Free delivery for orders more than R250, less a mere R45 delivery fee. And the discounts really are great... at least 25 percent off each book). Cancer: A love Story is Lauren Segal s achingly tender memoir, which starts one wintery morning in 2014 when she receives a call from her husband. The furthest thing from her mind is her biopsy results. For two years she s been living a cancer-free existence after a double mastectomy has put her in the clear. But the call shatters the foundation of her world the lump she thought was scar tissue is malignant. Her cancer is back. This is an intimate and inspiring book of a four-time cancer survivor... a book about friendships, asking for and receiving help, relationships, community and, of course surviving cancer. It s an incredible read, which also provides vital insights for professionals involved in the care of cancer patients and a hugely informative section on chemo tips for those undergoing treatment. Proceeds go to a breast cancer clinic. Details: R265. We ve got a copy to give away, simply visit www.pretoria.getitonline.co.za to enter. A GET IT BOOK CLUB choice WATCH: Girl Power The last few years have been a roller coaster ride for actress Emma Stone. Since her breakout role in 2007 s Superbad, she s spent the last decade starring in a string of successful movies like Easy A, The Help, and Birdman, and eventually went on to win an Oscar this year for her highly-acclaimed role in La La Land. However, it seems like this Hollywood star is just getting started, with her performance as Billie Jean King in Battle of The Sexes being praised by many as her greatest role yet. Starring alongside Steve Carell, (who plays Bobby Riggs) the movie follows the true story of the iconic 1973 tennis match that took place between King and Riggs, and which went down in history as a key moment in the world of sports. Poignant, entertaining, and beautifully recreated, it s a story that s not to be missed. In cinemas from December 1. Don t miss it! LISTEN: The boys are back With thirteen studio albums already under their belt, it s amazing that iconic Irish rock band U2 are still able to produce fresh, chart-topping hits, but their newest release, Songs of Experience, just proves that they re showing no signs of slowing down. Created to be a companion to their previous record, Songs of Innocence, the album was written as a collection of letters by lead singer Bono to the people and places closest to his heart. While their previous album focused on the band members experiences as adolescents in Ireland, their newest 13 track offering is filled with a wisdom that can only come from dominating the rock music scene for decades. If you love U2, or loved the album s first single, You re the Best Thing About Me, be sure to make it one of your December purchases. Available on itunes from December 1. BONUS READ Finally! You simply have to get your hands on the brand new Dan Brown, thriller, Origin. Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology and religious iconology, arrives at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend the unveiling of a discovery that will change the face of science forever. But Langdon and several hundred other guests are left reeling when the meticulously orchestrated evening is blown apart. With his life under threat, Langdon is forced into a desperate bid to escape, along with the museum s director, Ambra Vidal. On a trail marked only by enigmatic symbols and elusive modern art, Langdon and Vidal uncover the clues that will bring them face-to-face with a world-shaking truth that has remained buried - until now. Details: Penguin, R320. Get It Book Club price R256 (simply visit www.knowledgeroad.co.za/ getitbookclub, sign up and order. Free delivery for orders more than R250, less a mere R45 delivery fee. And the discounts are really great... at least 25 percent off each book). Toast to the new year! What goes better with a good book than a glass of wine? Constantia Glen Sauvignon Blanc 2017 has just added a 5-star rating in the 2018 Platter s South African Wine Guide to its string of accolades. The wine has already snapped up gold medals and received more than 90 percent ratings in international competitions. And for good reason. According to winemaker Justin van Wyk, the 2017 Sauvignon Blanc grapes were the most vibrant and flavoursome that he s ever worked with in his 10 years at Constantia Glen. A complete treat! To the new year! The past year she s been busier than ever, and with a new album out and a baby on the way, Charlize Berg is in for the ride of her life. We chat to her about her hectic schedule. The blonde beauty from Centurion is no stranger to success and living the life she s always dreamt of. Charlize Berg is one of a kind: part of twins, a daughter, wife, singer, songwriter, the face of a make-up line and now soon-to-be mommy to a little girl! Her diary is jam-packed especially with the new album out and shows all over the country. Even as a young girl, Charlize always knew that she wanted a career behind a microphone. My parents always asked me to sing for friends, family and guests at braais but I was always too shy, she says. It was the Celine Dion hit, My heart will go on, that gave her the courage to ignore her nerves and sing in front of people for the first time. There and then I knew that I had to follow my heart and pursue a career in music. The rest as they say is history, she laughs. Her first public performance was in front of a panel of teachers at her primary school, Laerskool Wierdapark in Centurion. I was so nervous that my knees buckled, my voice shook, I forgot my words and by the end of the song I couldn t even get a sound out, Charlize giggles. Her first performance as a professional singer was in front of a crowd of about a thousand people alongside Kurt Darren - they sang a duet. I felt like the tiniest ant on stage but it was quite an experience and it definitely helped to break the ice, Charlize adds. Since then, the talented singer has shared the stage with some of South Africa s most well-known musicians and hottest new talent and even played the role of Sleeping Beauty in the stage production Doringrosie Die Slapende Skone alongside Marno van der Merwe at Emperor s Palace. And yes, the nerves do still sometimes cause her to stop, take a deep breath and say a prayer. But, as Charlize puts it: If the butterflies leave your stomach you have a problem. Her brand new album As Jy Weet Dis Liefde was released earlier in the year and fans are loving it. I think my music speaks to people s hearts and my fans can identify with my music, Charlize says. It took a year to write, record and complete the album and the song Braaf, holds a special place in Charlize s heart. The album was awarded with a Ghoema award for best pop-album by a female artist earlier this year. It was the Celine Dion hit, My heart will go on, that gave her the courage to ignore her nerves and sing in front of people for the first time. Another one of Charlize s passions is beauty specifically make-up and she s recently been chosen as the ambassador for Halouw Make-up Academy and Alila Professional Make-up. You ll never catch her without a good mascara and lipstick in her make-up bag and she can t stop gushing about the Alila brand especially the matt lipstick. Their lipstick lasts very long on the lips. If I want my lipstick to last the entire day I always put a layer of pressed face powder on top of the first layer of lipstick before applying the second layer. This helps the lipstick to last longer, Charlize advises. Any other make-up secrets? If you like wearing lots of make-up: Don t let anyone tell you that it s wrong. Make-up helps make a woman feel good about herself and boosts her confidence. What can be wrong with that? she adds. But it s not all work and no play for the busy Pretorian. When she s not busy rehearsing, recording in studio or performing, she loves reading a good book, watching a movie or spending some quality time with her architect husband, Warren Linden, and the family. The couple tied the knot in April and Charlize gushes that she has an incredible husband who helps her juggle and keep a well-managed balance between her career and personal life. It s all about teamwork, she says. Her secret to a happy marriage? It s important to have God as the foundation of your marriage and of course trust, communication, support and unconditional love. For now, Charlize is getting ready for her first Christmas as a married woman. Christmas is very much a family occasion and we always open presents on Christmas Eve. We get together as a family, indulge in delicious food and listen to music and read about the birth of Jesus from the Bible, she says. And of course, she and Warren is getting ready for their little bundle of joy. This momma bear is dying of heat, she beams. Enige drome of planne vir 2018? We can t wait to kick off our shoes, get in the car and drive away into the sunset on vacation Sigh! But before we do, there is some packing that needs to be done. Here s what you ll need: You ve waited all year and the time has finally arrived. It s time to start packing for your holiday. But where to start? And what do you still need? For some, packing is one of the most daunting tasks, especially since you have to fit everything you might need for your holiday in one suitcase. Ridiculous, right? We looked around for some easy to follow tips to help make your life just a little bit easier. 1. MAKE A CHECKLIST We know that you already spent weeks planning your trip, and packing isn t supposed to be rocket science. But planning is key, especially when space is limited. Lay out everything you plan to take so it s easy to see what to pack and what to leave. Then it s time to eliminate all the unnecessary choices. And be ruthless. 2. ALWAYS ROLL Yeah, we know you ve heard it somewhere before. By simply rolling your clothes instead of folding them you can save loads of space and there is less chance of wrinkling. And did we mention that you can pack more stuff?! 3. BLING IT Us women tend to pack at least one outfit per day. But add it all up and space can definitely be a problem. Rather selecteda few statement jewellery pieces and add them to different outfits to create different looks. You can mix and match outfits, easy. 4. STUFF IT Stuff smaller items like belts, jewellery (in bags of course) and socks inside your shoes. This will save space and you will know exactly where to find them. The shoes will help keep all your little accessories together and dry if needed. Another tip is to fit socks over brushes so they don t cause damage to your clothing. Add a touch of romance to the season with this beautiful bold Maryka printed maxi dress, R999, Poetry. Complete your holiday look with these basic leather Lucille sandals from Trenery. Wear them with jeans or a cute summer dress. Available in camel and dark navy, R899. Metallics are still all the rage and no holiday wardrobe is complete without a glitzy metallic number. Easily go from the beach to the bar in this cute Chambray playsuit from Witchery, R999. Pleats are all the rage and this Chloe pleated wrap skirt will look gorgeous, even paired with a plain white T-shirt, R899, Forever New. Pack and away Time for some last minute shopping? Long, hot summer days call for long and even hotter nights, which in turn mean fun outside. Look your best with these easy-to-do make-up tips and tricks. 1. WING IT! Love the trend, but never get it quite right? Not to worry. This trick is going to change your life. All you need is a bobby pin and some liquid eyeliner. In layman s terms you use the pin as a stamp. So get started by coating the narrow V-shaped opening of the pin with liquid eyeliner and press against your eye where you want the wing. Simply etch along the lines and fill in the wing. 2. BLUSHING CHEEKS We sure love some quick and easy make-up tips and tricks and this one is so simple we can t believe we haven t thought about it yet. In a pinch and need some blush? Just use your lipstick. Simply rub the lipstick on your fingertips and rub against your cheeks. Blend for a smooth effect. 3. IT S THE MOST BROW- TIFUL TIME OF THE YEAR! For this tip we roped in the help of Benefit Cosmetics national brow artist, Lauren Engelbrecht, to achieve brows that slay! Here are 3 tips she gave us: TIP #1: BABY, IT S COLD OUTSIDE. What s a holiday party without a little drama? Bold brows are the key to achieving this glammed-up look. First, outline the base of your brow with a pencil or cream-gel of your choice before filling in the rest using light, quick strokes. Pair bold brows with rockin rosegold cheeks and of course, a few coats of mascara. TIP #2: ON THE NICE AND NATURAL- LOOKING LIST. Effortless woke up like this brows put you at the top of the lookin good list this season. To get a soft and natural look, brush a gel through brows using short, upward motions before applying a highlighter just below the arches. Keep the rest of your make-up as natural as possible. Go for a nude lip and bronzer instead of blush. TIP #3: FEATHERED BROWS ARE COMIN TO TOWN. To get instagram-worthy feathered brows, fill yours in with hair-like strokes. Simply use a light flicking motion in the direction of your natural hair growth, then brush brow hairs upward. Add a bit of highlighter in the corner of the eye, below the arch, on your cheekbones and on the bridge of your nose for eye-catching dimension. And of course. Perfect make-up starts with perfect, flawless skin. It s all about sundresses, sandals and sunny drinks with fruit and umbrellas - summer is fantastic after all! Check out these easy-to-do tips from Sebamed to enjoy radiant and healthy skin that ll have you glowing for all the right reasons. 1. STAY SOAP-FREE. Make sure all your products are soap-free and perfectly balanced with a ph of 5.5 to protect and strengthen your acid mantle, the skin s outer layer protection. 2. NO OIL OR EMULSION- BASED PRODUCTS. Even if you have acne-prone skin, it might still be dehydrated, dry and rough; thus, you need to moisturise after cleansing. Just remember to use oil-free products (moisturiser and make-up) to avoid more pimples in the long run. 3. LOOK AT YOUR ROUTINE. After choosing the correct products, ensure that you follow the correct process. Step 1: cleanse. Step 2: tone. Step 3: moisturise. Step 4: spot care. 4. DO NOT OVER CLEANSE. Yes, that s a thing; it s not just the products you use that affects your skin, but also the frequency you use it. Twice a day (morning and evening) is perfect. 5. BE GENTLE. Never scrub too hard when washing your face as you can damage your acid mantle. 6. STAY AWAY FROM PIMPLES. It s tempting, we know, but by picking and squeezing them, you risk damaging your skin s pore lining, allowing more bacteria to enter the skin. Instead, use a spot control gel, when you see a pimple forming. 7. FIND THE FRESHNESS. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and veggies and drink lots of water (a glass every 30 minutes). By enjoying healthy food, you flush toxins out of your system, and you ll feel (and look) healthy. 8. EXERCISE AND ENJOY THE FRESH AIR. Being active (even a little) stimulates your blood circulation and metabolism, which helps keep your skin radiant. 9. RELAX. This one might be easier said than done, but your skin and soul will love you for it. When you stress, you release chemicals into your brain that make the sebaceous glands produce more oil and induce pimples. Spoil December Wooden luxury On the hunt for beautiful and uniquely designed furniture to fit your living spaces? Look no further than Incanda Furniture. Incanda started from humble beginnings when owner Gerhard van Deventer started selling porcupine quill and guinea fowl feather lampshades and some tanned Nguni cow skins from the farm he grew up on in Swellendam, in the Southern Cape shortly after finishing his studies. It s also how the name came to be - Incanda means porcupine in Xhosa. From the quills, Gerhard moved on to tanning and selling of all kinds of game skin like Zebra and Springbok and also bovine (cow) leather. And from there Incanda started with upholstery, got their own mini sawmill, specialized in interior decorating and curtaining, and bought a woodwork factory. Today the team focus on what they do best making beautiful upmarket furniture. And boy, their furniture are amazing. Uniquely designed and truly South African inspired, Incanda Furniture is fast becoming the most loved furniture brand in the country.
