M E E T C H R I S S TA M P Since his early childhood days, Chris has always been immersed in fashion and the arts. Growing up he was inspired by his mother s hard work as a handbag designer and small business owner in Aspen, Colorado. He knew that creativity was his future. I never let the setbacks define me. There are always going to be times when things don t go your way. Looking back, I believe those struggles made me a better designer. - Chris Stamp While in college, majoring in graphic design, one of his professors inspired him to pursue business and become an entrepreneur. With an already strong art and design background he decided to broaden his horizon, and switch his focus. He graduated college with a business degree, giving him the tools to build a brand his way. During his senior project at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chris created a business plan for a customised footwear brand. The business eventually evolved from just shoes into the west coast Avant-street lifestyle brand, Stampd. Founded in 2011, Stampd is known for its meticulous attention to detail and designs that embody modern youth culture with high quality and a minimalistic aesthetics. Today, with a growing team, Stampd has its own flagship store in the heart of Los Angeles, selling his line of clothes and accessories all over the world.
F A S H I O N M E E T S F U R N I T U R E W H E N T E A M S U P W I T H C H R I S S TA M P I K E A IKEA has teamed up with Chris Stamp, LA-based designer and creative director of fashion brand Stampd, for the creation of. Launching this May, it s a limited edition collection supporting an active, urban life. Or, like some might say: a special place for showing and storing your favourite items. Many IKEA collaborations stem from a source of endless curiosity. The beginning of was no exception. Together with Chris we wanted to create a special place for your favourite items, and in that way show the uniqueness of many different people, says Marcus Engman, Head of Design at IKEA of Sweden. For Chris, coming from a small fashion studio in Los Angeles to working with a global furniture retailer was something completely new. It felt a bit unreal when IKEA first contacted me. It s a brand that I remember looking up to as a kid - always price conscious, yet known for good design. So it s been a great learning experience and opportunity for the Stampd crew. We ve gotten to work with an incredibly professional team - everyone has been super open and concise throughout every step of the process, Chris says. Great minds think alike Also apart of the collaboration was Polish freelande designer, Maja Ganszyniec. Based in Warsaw, most of her time is spent in Ä lmhult where she has been designing with IKEA since 2014. It turned out Chris and I had very similar ideas for the collection and its aesthetics. Since our first meeting in New York, our designs for the collection have been very coherent, Maja says. The idea behind the collection is for IKEA to reimagine how the younger, aesthetic, conscience, consumer is organising their wardrobe and accessories at home. I want them to be able to take pride in how they display their clothing and footwear, allowing them to appreciate their pieces just as much when they re not being worn, Chris says. and a more active lifestyle, are both quite innate to how I carry myself and my work as a designer. For me it s important to on one side of life be able to work really hard, and on the other allow yourself to be free and take care of your wellbeing. I think that way of living kind of bled into the designs for SPÄNST, Chris explains. An art form of objects Applying Chris s vision to IKEA, brings with it a crispness of sporty materials across different mediums, between essential apparel and furniture. With inspiration from concrete, nature and organic shapes, the collection entails statement storage pieces, like a transparent shoebox, a clothing rack and a mesh wardrobe. But that s not all - also introduces a few new, perhaps more unexpected, items - like a standing support, hoodies and a skateboard. I m really excited to have been apart of launching the first skateboard, for IKEA, ever, Chris smiles. However, his favourite is the LED light stick - a minimal, stylish lamp that can be clipped onto the wall, or leaned against it. The light is just an awesome piece. You can use it in so many different realms, and the fact that you can charge it with your USB makes it really flexible - whether it s on your wall with your smartphone adaptor or with your computer. The results of are something both Maja and Chris take pride in. I think that the collection is outstanding in terms of aesthetics because it embodies the openness of IKEA to explore new ideas and concepts, Maja says. I have to admit, I m going shopping big-time when the collection hits the stores, she smiles. For me, good design is minimal at its core, and that s a lot of what this collection speaks to. I see some of the pieces being staples several years from now. I hope people will see it as a fresh addition to the IKEA range, Chris concludes. His own life in Los Angeles and design process for Stampd has been an integral part of creating. I think that this urban realm
T H E C OL L A B OR AT I ON Exploring the changes and needs of young homes today, with a special focus on active, urban lifestyles, was the starting point for. A number of items from the collection were designed by Maja Ganszyniec, a frequent IKEA collaborator. Maja, a London Royal College of Art graduate, runs her design studio in Warsaw, and has maintained a close relationship with IKEA since 2014. The team met for the first time in New York, surprised to find that a lot of their initial ideas were similar: smart materials, monochrome colours with graphic elements were a few of them. They were inspired by the sports industry and the consious consumer - people who are not only concerned with what they wear, but also how to collect and show off those items - beautifying their surroundings in the process. So amongst the items in the collection you ll find a mesh wardobe, transparent shoeboxes and a shoe rack for displaying skateboards and/or footwear. I think we ve made really cool stuff for quite amazing prices. It was exciting to redefine what an IKEA product means and to introduce something unseen before. - Maja Ganszyniec
