2 23 July to 30 July 2015 Zimbabwean in court for Lethlabile police address Hartbeespoort, Brits rapes nyaope drug abuse A Zimbabwean national (23) appeared before the Brits Magistrates Court on Monday for rape and a robbery case in Brits and Hartbeespoort The suspect is believed to be involved in an incident where a 40-year-old woman was raped while on her way to work in Ifafi in July 2014. The suspect allegedly dragged the victim into the bushes near the road and raped her, said Brits police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mpeile Talane. The suspect was also linked to a rape case in Brits in August 2014. The suspect and an accomplice pointed CPF bi-election on 6 August The following positions for the Hartbeespoortdam Community Policing Forum s Executive Committee have become vacant. Nominations are called for to fill the positions of treasurer and an additional member. Nominations close today (Thursday) at midnight. Nomination forms are available from Lt. Col. J. Furthermore, the suspect is due to appear in the Pretoria High Court on 18 August 2015 for four murder cases. The case in Brits was postponed to 5 August for further investigation. Many of those arrested for robberies and burglaries use nyaope during the commission of their crimes. They also steal to support the drug habit. Nyaope users are some of the most active and dangerous offenders. Addressing and curbing drug use opens an avenue for reducing crimes like robberies, burglaries and theft, he said. 23 July to 30 July 2015 Roadside robbers cut off ears 3 - Two suspects arrested Two men were arrested on Monday after more roadside robberies in Hartbeespoort last weekend. During two of the robberies in Van der Hoff Road on Friday, the victims ears were cut off before the robbers fled with their personal belongings. Armed robbers have been terrorising pedestrians and motorists alongside Van der Hoff Road for months. On Friday night three people were robbed at gunpoint and injured. The first incident took place at 19:30 near Refentse, when a man was overpowered by three men armed with a firearm and knives. They cut his ear off and fled with his cellphone, clothes and a drill, said Hartbeespoort community policing forum spokesperson, Romano van der Spuy. Just over an hour later, another pedestrian was attacked near Ten Rooms by the rob- bers, who also cut off his ear and fled with his jacket and cellphone. The robbers then continued with their spree and attacked a couple in the same vicinity. They grabbed the woman, stabbed her in the hand with a knife and dragged her into the bushes with the intent of raping her. Her friend ran to the main road for help and when he came back, the robbers fled. According to Van der Spuy, some of the victims recognised one of the robbers. On Monday Hartbeespoort police officers arrested two suspects in Winterveld where they were hiding. From the stolen goods recovered, it is suspected that they may have been involved with a number of robberies and house robberies in the area, Van der Spuy said. Constables Lorraine Moeng, Japhta Lelaka, Alfred Mpye, Patrick Guenha and Walter Ngobeni with the stolen property retrieved. Police on the lookout for Van der Hoff stone throwers Hartbeespoort police are on the lookout for stone throwers terrorising motorists on the Van der Hoff Road. In a second incident in a week, a motorist was flagged down to stop near Sun- way on Sunday afternoon and when he refused, a number of people threw rocks at the vehicle. Last week a tow-truck was damaged in a similar incident. Before that, a number of incidents were reported. We would like to warn motorists to be on the lookout for these people and immediately contact the Hartbeespoort police, said Hartbeespoort community policing forum spokesperson, Romano van der Spuy. Motorists are also advised not to stop in these areas and inform the police of any suspicious persons or incidents. 23 July to 30 July 2015 5 Vrou skiet rower uit kas dood n Vrou van Mooinooi het Saterdagaand n gewapende rower vanuit die hangkas, waarin sy weggekruip het, doodgeskiet toe hy op haar daarin afkom. Tina du Toit (45), haar man, Giel (46), en hul twee dogters, skoonseun, vierjarige kleinkind en n vriend is Saterdagaand kort voor 20:00 deur drie gewapende rowers op hul kleinhoewe in die Mooinooi-omgewing oorval en aangehou. Tina het daarin geslaag om in n handkas in te klim voor die rowers haar kon sien. Ons het buite gebraai en het net in die huis ingegaan toe dit gebeur het, het n erg getraumatiseerde Tina Dinsdag aan Kormorant gesê. My man was siekerig en het gaan lê, terwyl my jongste dogter se vriend buite gaan rook het terwyl sy bad. Die rowers het hom eerste beetgekry en met n vuurwapen teen die kop gedwing om die veiligheidsdeur se sleutels te oorhandig, het sy gesê. Haar skoonseun het die aktiwiteit by die deur gesien, geskree dat daar mense is en gespook om die rowers buite te hou. Die deur is in die proses afgeskop. Ek het kamer toe gehardloop om my vuurwapen uit die kluis te kry en in die hangkas tussen die klere ingeklim. Die rowers, wat volgens Tina met drie vuurwapens, n mes en gwala gewapen was, het haar hoogswanger dogter en skoonseun die kamer ingebring en ook haar man en jongste dogter gaan haal. Sy het net n handdoek om haar gehad en het die rower gevra of sy iets kan aantrek. Hy het haar toegesnou en my man het vir haar my nagrok gegooi. Die rower het hom op sy knieë gedwing en gesê I shoot you white boer Tina het vanuit die kas gesien hoe hulle haar man met kabelbinders probeer vasmaak, maar hulle kon dit nie regkry nie. Hulle het Giel ook met die mes gesny. Dit was verskriklik om toe te kyk hoe hulle my gesin rondstamp. Giel sê hy kon my voete onder die klere sien uitsteek. Ek het heeltyd gebid dat die Here ons beskerm. Die volgende oomblik het een van die rowers die kas oopgemaak en toe hy die klere begin wegskuif, het ek geweet ek kan nie langer wag nie. Ek het geskiet en hy het voor die kas neergeval, het Tina in trane vertel. Sy het nog skote afgevuur en die ander twee rowers het op die vlug geslaan. Ek het nie geweet waar ek hom getref het nie. Ek het later gesien die patroon het hom in die gesig getref. Giel het ligte snywonde opgedoen en die res van die gesin is nie beseer nie. Almal is net erg getraumatiseer, het Tina gesê. Ons ontvang berading, maar elke keer as ek my oë toemaak, speel dit soos n rolprent voor my af. Sy het kort-kort in trane uitgebars terwyl sy met Kormorant gesels het. My dogter moet oor ses weke geboorte skenk en sy is net so getraumatiseerd. Ek dank net die Here dat hy my krag gegee het en ons almal bewaar het. Die gesin woon tans in n gastehuis. Niemand is nog in verband met die voorval in hegtenis geneem nie. It is time South Africans channelled some of the energy they spend on obsessing about Zuma to efforts to build a foundation for a new and better order after his exit, We as the community of Madibeng must start planning now on how we are going to undo the damage done by Madibeng before the local elections planned for next year. Every single facet run by the local municipality is badly impaired. I challenge any official in Madibeng to prove that they have a good story to tell. Even the symbolic 67 Minutes to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela was abused to waste thousands on T-shirts and new equipment while areas like Lethlabile haven t had running water for weeks and raw sewage is flowing into houses neighbouring the Sunway development. Madibeng is in a mess. But there is light at the end of the tunnel (yes, I know that this is a terrible pun in light of all the frustrations with the traffic lights at the dam wall, but it is the cherry on the cake of Madibeng s inefficiency). All indications are that the ruling ANC will lose considerable support in next year s election. It is our democratic duty to interact with the various candidates. They are the potential councillors that will have to look after your interest (and spending your money) for the next five years. 23 July to 30 July 2015 Watershedding in Brits 7 Brits and surrounding areas have been suffering water woes for the past month. This past week residents in a number of areas had to go without water for days after electrical cables were stolen at the Brits water treatment plant and then filters clogged, causing a severe water shortage. Water trucks had to deliver water to various suburbs of Brits, as well as surrounding areas like Lethlabile, Mothutlung and others that were without water for days. Trucks had to fetch water from Hartbeespoort and the Ga-Rankuwa areas. This follows the dirty water Brits residents had to make do with over the past month. Two weeks ago it was discovered that the dirty water was the result of the wrong chemicals being used to purify the water from the Crocodile River. The current water shortage is a result of dirty filters that have to be cleaned, and the subsequent cable theft at the plant. Since Monday watershedding has been instituted to try and fill reservoirs to capacity. Currently four of the 10 sand filters have been cleaned and workers are hard at work to normalise the situation, said DA councillor Johan Pieterse. On Wednesday morning the water supply was stabilising. Elandsrand was the most affected area in Brits, especially the high-lying areas. Water was tanked to the affected areas and the schools. While the situation is normalising, some of the high-lying areas may still be affected because of the high demand. The municipality estimates that by Friday the situation will have returned to normal, said municipal spokesperson Sipho Nkosi. The water infrastructure in Madibeng is no longer under municipal control, but is administrated by the Department of Water and Sanitation in conjunction with Magalies Water. The department has injected more than R300 million to upgrade the municipality s water provision and purification system. The administrator is on site, working on resolving the water challenges of the municipality, Nkosi said. The dirty water in Brits before the water completely dried up. A task team and police are on the lookout for any illegal initiation schools in the country, he said. We will not tolerate people who are running unauthorised or illegal schools. Our search is to get the law that can criminalise all illegal schools so that no deaths occur at any of these illegal schools, he said when he visited one of the closed-down illegal initiation schools in Meadowlands, in Soweto. The black upper breast is separated from the chestnut underparts by a narrow, but variable, white or pale orange line. The bill is black, the eyes dark brown, and the legs and feet are black. The female is dark grey above and chestnut below, lacking any white in the plumage. It is a large distinctive chat, that could only be confused with difficulty. The Mocking Cliff-chat is widely distributed throughout sub Saharan Africa, in suitable habitat. Their distribution in South Africa is from the Eastern Cape south of Port Elizabeth, along the coast to KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, Swaziland and the northeastern parts. They move to lower altitudes in winter to become absent from their haunts in the Magaliesberg and other sites on the Gauteng Highveld. This altitudinal movement, from mid-may to mid-september, is possibly driven by deciduous leaf loss rather than food shortage. Their favourite habitat is bases of cliffs and wooded, rocky slopes, where they are a fairly common, but localised resident. They often become rather tame around by Willie Froneman human settlements, especially farmsteads where there are old stone walls or ruins of stone buildings. Mocking Cliff-chats are monogamous and extremely territorial, defending their territory by song duets and threat behaviours. These song duets are aggressive and precisely synchronised. Their call is a clear, unmistakable, powerful fluty warble, has various mellow calls and an attractive song. Both sexes sing equally well, sometimes in duet. They are also able to call in a mixture of mimicked bird song. Research has shown that they imitate at least 30 different bird species. Their diet consists of insects, other invertebrates, fruit and nectar. Food of the Mocking Cliff-chat is poorly known, but they are known to feed on the nectar of the Krantz Aloe Aloe arborescens. They breed from September to December, lay two to four white, cream or pale greenish blue eggs in a bowl nest inside a striped swallow nest or a cavity in a cave or culvert; occasionally in a disused building. Eggs are variably spotted or speckled with pale red-brown and mauve. The nest is a felted bowl of hyrax or antelope hair on a foundation of leaves, feathers and twigs. The nest is built by both sexes within one to three weeks. Hair may be obtained from living antelopes. Incubation is 16 days by the female only. The nestling period is 21 days. Both parents feed the nestlings.this chat is often encountered in the Hartbeespoort area, except for the four months mentioned above. Everything loses colour and vibrancy, the lawn and shrubs turn yellow and plants die. But don t worry. Spring is around the corner and it is time to liven up your dull winter garden. What are the basics to prepare a garden for summer and when should you start working on this? Before you start planting, ensure that winter pruning is done, i.e. removing any dead wood and mulching around existing shrubs, using decomposed organic matter to conserve water and provide additional nutrients. Early August you should scarify your lawn. Scarification removes the thatch layer, to prevent the growth of disease. Thatch also prevents nutrients and water from getting to the roots. Weeds and dead crop plants have to be removed, and a layer of compost has to be applied. The best time to prepare your garden for summer is just before the first spring rains. Volgens Julius Kleynhans, AfriForum se hoof van omgewingsake, neem lede van die plaaslike gemeenskap eienaarskap van hul omgewing. Mount Amanzi het na ons uitgereik om hande te vat en die toeriste-attraksie by die damwal op te knap. Waterwese het ons geakkommodeer en ook hand bygesit. Die projek is die begin van ʼn groot ekotoerismekonsep wat ek glo mooi gemeenskaplike verhoudings sal vestig. AfriForum is van mening dat die damwal ʼn toeriste-attraksie is wat tot op hede nog baie onderbenut is. Waterwese gaan die damwal restoureer. Gemengde resultate is tydens hengelsessies behaal, met sommige hengelaars wat geen vangste gemaak het nie, en dan was daar weer die gelukkige hengelaars wat met karp swaarder as 10 kg hul hengelsessies kon afsluit. Hoosyn Mansoor het tydens n besoek aan Eagle Waters n karp geland wat die skaal op 18.60 kg getrek het. Karp van 17 kg en kleiner is ook gevang. Die vis is met sweetcorn tigernuts gelok. Dirk Kotzé kon vanaf Kommandonekoewer karp land wat 9.6 kg en 10 kg ingeweeg het. Hoewel hengelaars lank wag vir die groot karp om aas te neem, is die resultaat baie goed met die tipe vis wat uitgetrek word. Hengelaars word genooi om aan die Ifafi Aquaticklub 24-uur-karphengelkompetisie deel te neem wat Saterdag 15 Augustus om 07:00 begin en tot tot Sondag 16 Augustus 07:00 duur. Besprekings kan by die oewer gedoen word. Die kompetisie dien as fondsinsameling vir Kuierkidz-leersentrum vir breingestremde kinders.
