Information Kit for Swimming WA clubs The following kit has been designed to assist your Club to promote SunSmart
SunSmart Grant Program Healthway is delighted to partner with Swimming WA to support swimming WA clubs across WA to be SunSmart. Swimming and being outdoors go hand-in-hand, so recognising the dangers of UV exposure and being SunSmart is crucial for swimmers safety. The following information will help your club implement strategies to be SunSmart and assist your club in applying for a SunSmart Grant. We want to get people to swim in a fun, friendly, healthy environment! What is SunSmart? The goal of the SunSmart campaign is to teach people the importance of sun protection. Your skin remembers all of your body s UV exposure; it all adds up and increases your risk of developing skin cancer. The UV index tells you when UV radiation is doing you harm and when to be SunSmart. SunSmart Strategies SunSmart strategies are designed to encourage SunSmart behaviour to reduce the amount and intensity of UV radiation individuals are exposed to. There are a number of different ways to encourage SunSmart behaviour: 1. Healthy environments change the club environment to facilitate SunSmart behaviours including the adoption of a SunSmart policy. 2. Promotion create awareness and educate people on the SunSmart message. 3. Role modelling lead by example when it comes to SunSmart behaviours.
1. Healthy Environments Your Club can support and encourage people to protect themselves from harmful UV exposure by making simple changes to the club environment. A SunSmart policy (template available in zip pack) can facilitate SunSmart behaviour. Your SunSmart policy may include: Scheduling events and training outside peak UV hours where possible. Dress code/uniforms make sure clothing/uniforms provided by the club are SunSmart-compliant. Shade provide umbrellas, marquees and/or shade sails if permanent shade is not available. Sunscreen provide free sunscreen and also encourage members to bring their own. Where possible, consider moving to an indoor venue if the UV is high. Also included in the zip pack, is a SunSmart event checklist to help ensure your events are SunSmart. 2. Promote SunSmart Learn how to protect yourself from skin cancer here and help educate swimmers using this information. The UV index will tell you when the UV radiation is doing you harm and need sun protection. If the UV is above 3, you need to be SunSmart! You can download the UV forecast app at www.myuv.com.au which provides the realtime UV level. 3. Role-Modelling Modelling is a powerful teaching tool. Coaches, officials and other staff must reinforce SunSmart behaviour by wearing hats, appropriate clothing, sunglasses and applying sunscreen when outdoors. Also, try to use people who are SunSmart on promotional material such as social media posts and flyers. Role-modelling changes social norms, and will encourage SunSmart behaviour.
