SCIENCE HOME-WORK HOME EXPERIMENTS For this exercise, you will conduct a series of experiments at home that will teach you not just about Science but about how they are applied in various household chores too. Study the instructions carefully and follow the steps to carry out the experiments. Then, learn about the scientific concepts behind them.
What do you do when you run out of toilet cleaner? Use Coke! This experiment will show you how it works. 1. Pour a can of Coke down a toilet bowl at home. EXPERIMENT 1 CLEANING THE TOILET WITH COKE 2. Leave the Coke in there for 2 hours. 3. Flush the toilet. The toilet bowl should be considerably cleaner, and you should be able to remove any remaining stains easily with a toilet brush. Why? Because Coke contains phosphoric acid, which dissolves toilet stains. It also contains lots of sugar, and sugar attracts ants. So make sure you flush all of it away! Hate it when you have oil stains on your shirt? This experiment will show you how you can get rid of them. With chalk! EXPERIMENT 2 REMOVING OIL STAINS WITH CHALK 1. Drip a single drop of oil onto an old T-shirt that you no longer want. 2. Rub white chalk onto the resulting stain, making sure you cover the entire stain. 3. Leave the chalk to settle for 10 minutes. 4. Wipe it away with a wet towel. The chalk, a form of calcium carbonate, will absorb the oil from your T-shirt and the stain should disappear.
Did you know that toothpaste isn t just good for cleaning teeth, but sneakers too? See how it works with this experiment. EXPERIMENT 3 SCRUBBING SNEAKERS WITH TOOTHPASTE 1. Grab a pair of dirty sneakers, a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste. 2. Apply 1-2cm of toothpaste onto the toothbrush. 3. Use it to brush the stains off the shoes. 4. Use a wet towel to wipe the shoes clean. Tiny particles in the toothpaste called abrasives will rub against the dirt on the shoes, scrubbing it off. So the shoes should look new! Can fruit ripen overnight? Try this experiment to find out for yourself! 1. Get a green, unripe banana. 2. Place the banana together with a red apple in a clear plastic bag. 3. Poke 3 small holes into the plastic bag. EXPERIMENT 4 RIPENING UNRIPENED FRUIT 4. Leave the fruits in the plastic bag for 3-4 days. You should find that the banana has yellowed significantly! Why? Because apples release a special gas called ethylene, which causes fruits around them to ripen quickly, allowing you to eat them sooner.
Make the most of the spare ketchup sachets in your fridge with this experiment. 1. Pick out the oldest, most tarnished metal pot in your kitchen. 2. Cover the entire pot (including the base) with ketchup. 3. Let the pot sit in your sink for 40 minutes. EXPERIMENT 5 POLISHING A POT WITH KETCHUP 4. Scrub the pot with a sponge. 5. Rinse and dry it. The acetic acid in the ketchup will dissolve the metal oxide that tarnishes your old pot, leaving behind a bright, shiny one! The average person drops around 50-100 hairs a day. Here s an experiment to show you one of the quickest and cheapest ways to pick them up! EXPERIMENT 6 PICKING UP HAIRS WITH A RUBBER BAND 1. Stretch a rubber band across your open palm from in between your thumb and forefinger to in between your pinky and ring finger. 2. Rub your open palm over the hairs around your home in a circular motion. The static electricity generated will cause the hairs to stick to the rubber band! So the next time you see hairs lying under your table, don t try picking them up one by one. Use Science!
Annoying foggy bathroom mirrors seem unavoidable, but they really aren t! This experiment will show you how you can make your mirrors fog resistant. With shaving cream! 1. Apply shaving cream all over your bathroom mirror. 2. Leave it on until it has completely dried out. EXPERIMENT 7 PREVENTING MIRRORS FROM FOGGING WITH SHAVING CREAM 3. Wipe it all off with a dry paper towel. 4. Take a nice, warm shower as usual. You should find that the mirror no longer fogs up. Why? Because chemicals in the shaving cream called surfactants reduce the water tension in the droplets that condense onto the mirror, preventing them from clinging onto it.
