I am so happy you're here, and am super excited to share my From Boring Basics to A Style Statement guide with you! In case we haven't met before, I'm Lisa. Yes, I'm a Personal Stylist, but I'm also a Mom, Wife, Daughter, Friend, Business Owner a busy woman just like you so my mission is to always make this "style stuff" as easy as possible. Since starting my Personal Styling business in 2008, one of the things I have heard from so many women over the years is that they are totally stumped when it comes to wearing their clothes in new ways. They say they keep wearing the same pieces, in the same combinations over and over again, and they're bored! They want to get out of their style ruts, try new things, and have some fun with their wardrobe but the problem is they have no idea where to begin and are worried about making a fashion faux pas. Can you relate? Well, no need to worry because I've got you covered!
In this guide, you're going to find 3 of the most common basic pieces (that you probably already have in your wardrobe), and I'm going to show you how to wear them in a more fun and stylish way. I'll begin by showing you the most common way I see women wearing each of these 3 pieces, and then I will show you a new way to wear them that is a step up, but shouldn't put you too far out of your comfort zone. Think of it like, dipping your toes in the style stream. Then, I'll show you another way to style that basic piece that is a step up from the previous step up (you still with me here?). Instead of just dipping your toes in the style stream, I'll show you how to jump right in. So, what do you say? Are you ready to take your style up a notch and wear your basics in some fun new ways? Ahhh...the Yoga Pant! Whether you work out or not, the Yoga Pant has become a staple in almost every woman's wardrobe. Not only are they super comfy, but a well made pair can hold you in, in all the right places. Am I right?! I wear them myself, so don't worry I get it! And I'm not going to tell you that you have to ditch them. BUT... If you're not downward doggin' it or headed to the gym, there are more stylish ways to stay comfy in your yoga pants but look a bit more styled at the same time.
Look #1) This is the most typical way women are wearing their Yoga Pants; with a long tank, a hoodie, and some casual sandals or sneakers. Look #2) Just as comfy as Look #1, but taken up a notch. Replace the boring tank and hoodie for a playful graphic tank and jean jacket. Then finish it off with some bolder jewellery and funkier shoes. Look #3) Ditch the Yoga Pants altogether for a "just as comfy" pair of luxe leggings (pleather, anyone?), a sexy longer top, fun piece of jewellery, and some embellished flats.
Everyone thought they would be a passing fad, but skinny jeans are here to stay! And now that they are considered a Classic denim piece, it's time to experiment and get more creative with what you pair them with. Like any other style of jeans, anything goes with denim so let's have some fun! After all, it takes just as much time to put on a boring top as it does to put on a fun one. Right? I'm going to show you how with just a few minor additions, you can take your Skinny Jeans from a boring basic to a style statement, just like that!
Look #1) We can do better than a basic solid coloured top, flats, and a simple piece of jewellery, right? Look #2) Add some personality to your look with a printed top or something with more detail (or both!). Add on a statement cuff bracelet, some earrings, and cute ankle booties and you've instantly taken your style up a notch! Look #3) Take your skinny jeans to the next level of style with a coloured pair! Top with a cool denim shirt, fun belt, cute vest, playful earrings, and statement flats!
What a Classic piece! No matter what your Personal Style is, you most likely have (or had) a striped t shirt/top in your wardrobe. It seems to be the "go to" pattern for those who are afraid of prints and patterns. It's super versatile as well, but for some reason, most people are afraid to really mix it up and choose to instead play it safe by pairing it with other neutrals and "classic pieces". Well, not by the time I'm done with you! : )
Look #1) The typical striped t shirt outfit; some jeans with a classic piece of jewellery and some cute (but always matching!) shoes. Look #2) Let's take those stripes to the next level with some sexy skinny jeans in a darker colour (AKA dressier), a colourful piece of statement jewellery, a funky layering piece like the vest shown here, and some on trend shoes. Look #3) Let's REALLY mix it up with another pattern or print (make sure the colours of the stripes are found in the other print/pattern). P.S. You can get the same effect with some printed pants instead of a skirt. Or do solid bottoms and a printed jacket.
Making over your style or your wardrobe doesn't always have to involve buying a bunch of new pieces...sometimes it's just about getting a bit more creative with how you mix and match things together. I hope that these 6 new ways I've shown you to style your basics has not only given you some new outfits to wear, but that it's also inspired you to experiment with some new looks in the future with your other basic wardrobe pieces.
