The main section of the booth will feature an installation of works by Allan McCollum, Jonathan Lasker, and Alfredo Jaar three of the defining positions of the gallery s program alongside works by younger, upcoming European artists from the program including Angela de la Cruz, Idris Khan, Michael Müller, and Jonas Weichsel. Finally, a highlight of this year s presentation will be a selection of works by American star photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. This brochure represents a selection of the works at our booth. ALICE AYCOCK Alice Aycock s work (born 1946, Harrisburg, PA, USA) can be found in the collections of MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Louis Vuitton Foundation, LACMA, the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., and many others. She first gained international recognition in 1977 with her contribution to documenta 6. Her new sculpture Alien Twister (2018) visualizes the movement of wind energy and is related to a series of large-scale aluminum sculptures, which were first presented in a spectacular installation on New York s Upper East Side in 2014 under the title Park Avenue Paper Chase. 4,5 Alice Aycock Alien Twister, 2018 (rendering) Powder coated aluminium and stainless steel 213 x 190 cm 84 x 74 3/4 in Edition 1/4

PAT STEIR At the booth, Aycock s sculpture is partnered with a large Waterfall painting by Pat Steir (born 1940 in Newark, NJ, USA). Thanks to the signature drip - style of her paintings, Steir since the 1980s has been at the forefront of American painting. In her works, the paint itself paints the painting, relaying to the beholder the deep physicality of time, the workings of gravity, and the exigencies of chance. In 2019, two major museum commissions by Steir will be revealed at the Smithsonian s Hirshhorn Museum, Washington D.C., and the Barnes Museum, Philadelphia. 6,7 Pat Steir Something Waterfall, 2015 (detail) Oil on canvas 274 x 183 cm 108 x 72 in

On view at the booth at Art Basel Miami Beach are two of his most well-known series from the early 1980s, Plaster Surrogates and Perfect Vehicles. McCollum s work features in most major museum collections in the US as well as numerous public collections in Europe. JONATHAN LASKER Jonathan Lasker (born 1948, Jersey City, NJ, USA) is a painter who in the 1980s while resisting the Lyrical Abstraction, Field Painting, Minimalist movements made use of the art world s conceptual turn, engaging in new possibilities of painting and devising a self-referential system and vocabulary of sign-like shapes and colors. His work has been shown in exhibitions world-wide including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA P.S.1, documenta 9, Museo Reina Sofía, Stedelijk Museum, Pinakothek der Moderne, MUDAM, Luxembourg, Centre Georges Pompidou and the Hayward Gallery. A solo exhibition of new works by Lasker will open at Galerie Thomas Schulte in April 2019. 16,17 Jonathan Lasker For Now or Forever, 2017 (detail) Oil on linen 191 x 254 cm 75 1/4 x 100 in

IDRIS KHAN British artist Idris Khan OBE (born 1978, Birmingham, England) in the last few years has become one of the UK s most successful young artists and with his photographic and video works, paintings, sculptures, and works on glass has also gained great international acclaim. In 2017, he was awarded the American Architecture Prize for the design of his Memorial Monument and Pavilion of Honour in the new Memorial Park in Abu Dhabi. Most recently, in October 2018, he revealed a major commission of twenty-one paintings, which are on display in the Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the British Museum in London. At the booth in Miami, Khan presents a new work on glass onto which he stamps a multitude of lines of text melting into a single image. This multilayered approach creates a sense of expanded time, allowing the viewer to contemplate a deeper meaning buried within language. Through a continuous process of creating and erasing, adding new layers, whilst retaining traces of what has been, Khan creates something entirely new by way of superimposition and repetition. 22,23 Idris Khan Rough Seas, 2018 3 glass sheets stamped with white oil-based ink, aluminum, rubber 165 x 140 x 18 cm 65 x 55 x 7 in

MICHAEL MÜLLER Michael Müller (born 1970, Ingelheim am Rhein, Germany) is a conceptual artist and rising star of the German art scene, whose manifold, proliferating oeuvre resists any straight-forward or one-way interpretation. Most recently, in 2018, he was nominated for the prestigious Prize of the Böttcherstrasse. Müller continuously broadens the methods of his artistic expression, combining works on paper with painting, text-based work, sculpture, found objects, music, and performance, and has even developed a cosmetic line and fashion collection. He received great critical and curatorial attention for his Eighteen Exhibitions cycle, which resulted in solo exhibitions at two of Germany s most progressive art institutions, KW Institute of Contemporary Art, Berlin, and Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. 26,27 Michael Müller Gstaad (From the series: Vor und hinter dem Glas), 2017 (detail) Acrylic on glass 180 x 140 cm 70 3/4 x 55 in

ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE Finally, another highlight of this year s presentation will be a selection of works by star photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (born 1946, New York, NY; died 1989, Boston, MA, USA) whose sustained legacy in 2019 will be celebrated at the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York with a yearlong exhibition of the artist s early Polaroids and collages to his iconic, classicizing photographs of male and female nudes, flowers, and statuary, portraits of celebrities, and his more explicit depictions of the S&M underground. ANGELA DE LA CRUZ Angela de la Cruz (born 1965 La Coruña, Spain) in her work confronts the boundaries of traditional painting and sculpture by devising works, which are neither painting nor sculpture but something in between (Donald Judd). Having been awarded the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas of her country of origin, Spain, in 2017, her work is currently on view in a major mid-career retrospective at Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao traveling to the Galicia Contemporary Art Center in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. In 2016, he was awarded a residency at the Villa Romana in Florence, Italy, and in 2012, he won the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Stipendium. Recent solo exhibitions include Quadrat Joseph Albers Museum, Bottrop (2018), Museum Wiesbaden (2016), and Deutsche Bundesbank, Frankfurt a.m. (2013). ALFREDO JAAR Alfredo Jaar (born in Santiago de Chile in 1956) is an artist, architect and filmmaker. Challenging commonly held preconceptions of the relationship between art and politics, Jaar fuses the aesthetic and the ethical in order to focus on the world s injustice: poverty, exploitation, genocide. Jaar s work has been shown extensively around the world. He became a Guggenheim Fellow in 1985 and a MacArthur Fellow in 2000. In 2006, he received Spain s Premio Extremadura a la Creación. The neon I Can t Go On I ll Go On (2016) is a tribute to the Irish author and playwright Samuel Beckett, referencing the famous last line of his 1953 novel The Unnamable: Perhaps it s done already, perhaps they have said me already, perhaps they have carried me to the threshold of my story, before the door that opens on my story, that would surprise me, if it opens, it will be I, it will be the silence, where I am, I don t know, I ll never know, in the silence you don t know, you must go on, I can t go on, I ll go on.
