tyle January is traditionally recovery month in the West, what with the hangover from New Year to contend with, and the wallet damage suffered as a result of Christmas. But we re not in Kansas anymore, Toto, we re in China, and a swift recovery has never been more important. As the city gears up for the relatively early lunar New Year celebrations, it s essential to get on top of your game. Rather than opting for the foolish ritual of signing up for a gym membership that likely won t get used beyond January 10, go for the good old-fashioned Carol Vorderman detox quick, relatively painless, and not a colonic irrigation pipe in sight. Newly opened World Health Store (see What s New: Shops, p21) has a dedicated detox section, jam-packed with vitamins, minerals, wheatgrass juicers and perhaps more bizarrely foot detox patches. This odd invention claims to suck out the seasonal toxins from the soles of your feet. Believe that and perhaps you ll believe anything, but there are those who swear by them, so nothing ventured and all that jazz. For those who prefer a more traditional form of feeling like a million dollars, the good news is that there are special offers a go-go in spas across the city. The good people at the Ritz-Carlton Financial Street are offering a rather superb 20 percent discount on spa packages, or 25 percent discount on individual treatments for readers of the Beijinger. Over at The Village, the Comfort Zone spa is offering a 90- minute hydrating and regenerating package for RMB 120. Not to be sniffed at, especially considering the amount of eggnog consumed lately. Mango, Iberian purveyors of stylish threads, will be holding a 30-50 percent sale running all the way through until January 25. So if Santa didn t bring you that gold lamé minidress you had your heart set on, you can pop down to Mango and pick it up yourself, for a fraction of the price. And if you must insist on forms of physical exercise as a way of tackling the January blues, and sales shopping just won t do it, strap on a pair of ice skates and give the Village s outdoor ice rink a whirl. It might not be as traditional as a spin around Houhai lake, but it is strategically located next to the Sanlitun bar street, where you can nurse your wounds better with a stiff gin. The only place in China to carry Burton s full 2009 line of snowboard gear, Icon X recently set up shop at Ciqikou. With a mini-ramp out front (under constant threat of being chai d by The Man) and several comfy couches inside, it s a great place to congregate, skate and talk shop. The shop offers a seriously drool-worthy collection of outerwear and boards, and is the only board sports store in China with 100 percent bona fide gear, but the lack of brand diversity is a little disappointing. There are several skate brands available, including Independent, Circa, Fallen, and Santa Cruz, but the snow gear selection is limited to Burton. Boards start from RMB 2,600, and jackets are RMB 1,300 and up. But there s more to the shop than muscle supplements. You ll also find vitamins and mineral supplements of every description. There s a beauty section, which imports the organic Nature s Gate line of toiletries from the US (from RMB 80), and WHS will soon offer their own range of organic soaps. The detox rack offers many wares to cleanse the system, which must be tried to be believed. Ethical homemakers will likely snap up the eco-friendly household products, which are non-toxic and 100 percent recycled. Foodstuffs include organic cereals (RMB 55) and coffee (RMB 115), which they ll grind fresh for you. There s also a rather snazzy range of juicers and water ionizers. Most exciting for Beijing, however, is the promised range of facemasks and filters (from RMB 499) which cyclists will love. Upon entrance, the eye is directed to either one of two things the modest selection of tasteful clothing lining the wall, or the rainbow of thongs dangling from the ceiling. This curious juxtaposition begs the question: sex shop or clothing boutique? The answer is both, or everything a girl needs to feel completely sexy according to owner Miss Wang. Lover offers a small collection of outerwear (tops, bottoms, shoes and scarves), most of which are one of a kind and come only in one size. This limitation is forgivable, however, as the store s main focus is on meeting your needs with varying degrees of kinky lingerie of all sorts, from matching cotton or silk sets (RMB 150-400) to crotchless panties in an array of patterns and lacings (RMB 80). In just the last three years, Beijing s winter mood has become discernibly less bleak. Global warming has been a big contributor, but the role of more lively fashions sported by locals cannot be minimized. Somber tones befit the wind and chill of the season, but a blazing scarf or zebra-print pants add mirth and warmth, much like a cup of mulled wine or eggnog staves off the wintry chill. Hardly Dowdy Swede Jesper Lindquist is creative director and co-founder of the Dowdy fourhundred, a leather bag maker. The model in his hand is the Edith, named after the singer Edith Piaf. Dowdy refers to unfashionable and unattractive people, while the fourhundred marks society s elite and the production run for each of their models. Chic Rags from Japan Shen Shen wears vintage clothing made in Japan, purchased at the cool Anxi Market, a Shanghai emporium of retro goods. With so many sexy fits and up-to-the-moment fashions on the streets, the genteel floppiness of this look is eye-catching. Well-executed frumpiness is chic in a land with so much that is brand-new. Cute Cupcake Apparently Li Jia has been described this way before. Her choices in cuts and colors here don t detract. The waist-length blue coat is especially nice. Despite appearances, she is, however, a hard-edged public relations consultant for an American corporate behemoth. White Shoes and a Tough Mix Several years back, some guys, probably in London and Milan, decided casual white shoes match everything. Almost immediately, the world s men clicked their heels and began following this style directive. While not a bad trend, white shoes don t seem ideal for Beijing, where all stylish men wear them. Fashionista and Photographer No. 223 is founder and editor in chief of Too Magazine, China s answer to hypercool art fashion magazines like ID and Wallpaper. Something of a collector s item, Too Magazine only came out once. Now No. 223 has opened funky menswear boutique Dandy Dandy in 3.3. He also releases photography books. Adorable Designy Couple These two study art design at Beijing Huijia Univeristy. They are also a very complementary couple, with his hat matching the color of her hair quite well. Out of Africa, Circa 2525 For some foreigners, an annoying characteristic of Chinese couples is their tendency to dress identically. Fangfang and Ken, designers and partners in zebra-hunting, should be more than excused because they have taken the concept of coordinated outfits to a more advanced level, both in location and time period. Brown and Navy Perfected German Claus puts to rest the debate about brown and navy going together not that there was ever a debate in my mind. The navy Hugo Boss three-piece is perfect with not only the shoes but also the brown tie, far preferable to the usual bright stripes. Live Accessory Wearing one of the best outfits yet to appear on Stylites is Joy, who runs JMAX, a Nanluogu Xiang boutique offering jewelry made from wool, leather, wood and feathers. The little black cat in her arms, Sami, is a couple of months old and brings good luck to the shop. Tote Couple One with a little red bag and the other with a big blue one, Marion Venus and Tim Bowen are nothing if not an attractive couple. Each has a distinctive style, but the two blend well. This certainly counts as dressy Sunday attire in Beijing perfect for promenading down the more pedestrian-friendly streets. Hendrix Fan The ability of Chinese to christen themselves according to their own taste can be enviable. Hendrix named himself after his favorite guitarist.
