THE SOUTHERN ARIZONA WATERCOLOR GUILD Sketchbook JANUARY 2019 www. southernazwatercolorguild.com Happy New Year! Tifft Grant Open Studio We are looking to implement an Open Studio each second Saturday and Sunday of every month, beginning January 2019. If you d like a morning or afternoon shift, please contact Sandra at sanfmontgomery@aol.com. This is a great opportunity for you to connect with potential buyers and show off your work. We know from surveys that active painting brings in visitors to our gallery! A letter from our President, Karyn Vampotic, distributed by Docent Coordinator, Bethanne Simpson, encourages all docents to consider setting up to paint at our new 4 table, purchased just for this purpose. Docents and Open Studio volunteers can set up right outside our door in good weather, or right inside the front area of the gallery, and paint. Active painting intrigues passersby and brings an increase in visitors and sales! No other store in the Williams Centre can compete with our live attractions! Have you thought about applying for the Tifft Grant? The Tifft Grant was established to engage emerging artists as well as seasoned artists who are working with water-based and related media in a learning experience utilizing the concepts found within archives of Janet s (Tifft) artwork. The Tifft Arts and Sciences Heritage Fund in Recognition of Janet Ann (former SAWG member) and William Grant Tifft has been established through the Jewish Community Foundation (JCF) and those wishing further information can contact Robyn Schwager through email at grants@jcftucson.org or contact me directly. SAWG is one of the few organizations to be invited to apply for this generous artistic grant and we look forward to many years of this opportunity. Submitted by Nancy Holmberg, Grant Administrator Membership Directories are Here! The 2018-19 Directories are here! Be sure to pick up your copy at the next General Meeting, or any time at the Gallery. NEXT GENERAL MEETING MONDAY, JAN. 14TH SOCIAL - 6:30pm ST. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Painting! It s what we love to do! And what visitors to our beautiful gallery come to see. That s why I ve asked Bethanne Simpson, our Docent Coordinator, to send a letter to everyone who plans to take a turn sitting in our gallery. I hope that includes you! In the letter I ask that each docent seriously consider bringing paint materials when it s time to docent and to use our new smaller table to set up and be visible while painting. Whether it s outside the gallery, when our gorgeous winter sun graces us, or right inside the front window, we ve seen that the act of painting attracts gallery visitors. More visitors, more sales, more exposure to the community at large I hope you ll agree that it s a win/win when you set up your paints and work away your docenting hours. This is not a requirement just a hope you ll want to participate to actively increase our gallery s visibility. Lots of exciting events coming up! I hope you saw the eblast and signed up for my next free (including materials) workshop: Framing on the Cheap! It s open to the first 10 members who rsvp to me at president@southernazwatercolorguild.com. Sign up began December 21. The workshop is at the gallery on Monday, January 21st from 1 2:30. I ll be sharing my thrift store technique of scoring inexpensive quality frames, the equipment needed to do your own framing and Mike Dutton, who had a framing business for years will add his expertise! I ll have all the tools available for participants to frame a small watercolor/acrylic painting of their own. Randy Hale will judge the entries for the Annual Show and be at the gallery to give out awards at the Annual Show Reception on Thursday, January 17th. This is a point show. I hope you entered paintings and that I ll see your artwork on our walls! I m happy to report that both two day Hale workshops are full, but we have an exciting four day workshop with artist Lian Quan Zhen February 12 15th just around the corner. Sign up now for this awesome opportunity to increase your skills at our fabulous workshop setting at St. Francis in the Foothills! If you were lucky enough to get into the SAWG Video Club, you know how wonderful it is to meet the last Monday of every month and watch a film on watercolor techniques and paint together as a community. Our next Club meeting is Monday January 28th. We transform the gallery into a movie theater and are engaged for an hour and half with no outside interruptions. Heaven! Community. We are a very special community. I hope you ll participate in our community and come to our January 19th 11 am Brainstorming Session on ideas for Summer Shows at the gallery. Marti White, our Vice President of Shows, will join me in a roundtable discussion highlighting YOUR ideas for innovative exciting shows from June 13th to the beginning of September. We d love to hear your thoughts!! This is YOUR gallery and YOUR Guild!! Come voice YOUR opinion!! To dovetail with that session, on Saturday, February 16th at 11am at the gallery, Marti and I will demystify the process of running a SAWG show. It s easier than you think and a GREAT way to get to put names to faces! It s easy when you work with the best! I hope everyone s holiday season was filled with joy and contentment and hope to see all of you at our next General Meeting on Monday, January 14th at 6:30 for socialization, 7:00pm for the Meeting and demonstration by the fabulous Randy Hale! All the best, Karyn Remember - To submit any articles for the Sketchbook to Sandy Walker, walkersj@cox.net. Deadline is always the 15th of each month. MISC. NEWS STILL MORE FOR YOUR MEMBERSHIP!
