Part of World Routes Summer Festivals 2010 at Harbourfront Centre TORONTO, ON (June 3, 2010) The summer just got a lot more fun for kids with family-friendly programming at Harbourfront Centre s World Routes Summer Festivals! From July 1 to Sept. 6 kids ages five to 12 can take part in FREE activities including games, crafts and workshops. These activities are designed to present contemporary arts and culture from a kid's point of view and to make it easily understandable and accessible. The big idea behind all programming at this year s World Routes Summer Festivals is globalocal, or global to local. This theme is programmed into each festival to bring together rich artistic traditions from around the corner to around the globe! It s a unique opportunity to experience top Canadian and international artists in music, dance, theatre, visual arts, film, literature and food in a fun, family-friendly environment without ever leaving the city! World Routes Family Programming Activities Include: CANADA DAY (July 1) Celebrate Canada s 143 rd birthday by exploring the many cultures and artistic genres that form our Canadian identity. Canadian Games from Around the World July 1, 1-6 p.m. (Harbourfront Centre Pond) Families can play a familiar game of jump rope with new songs and new rhythms in a whole new way. Competitive rope-skipping teams demonstrate their skills and invite families to jump right into the fun! Mini-Kayak Obstacle Course July 1, noon, 2 p.m. & 4 p.m. (Natrel Pond) Kids can participate in a mini-kayak obstacle course on the Natrel Pond. The kayaks are tied together and each participant only gets a two-foot paddle! Every participant receives a free Canadian flag and the fastest team in each event wins a prize! Colour Me Canada July 1, 1-6 p.m. (HarbourKIDS Zone) Kids can celebrate Canada Day by getting their hair sprayed red and white!

THE HOT SPOT (July 2 4) The Hot Spot Festival captures international trends in music, dance and food, exploring what s hot from a global perspective. Diabolo Juggling July 2, 8-9 p.m., July 3 & 4, 2-3 p.m. (Redpath Stage & Ann Tindall Lawn) Véronique Provencher, one of the only diabolo jugglers in North America performs the art of diabolo, a staple in juggling and circus communities. Provencher combines juggling with clown and dance and even performs a fire show at night with torches, diabolo on fire, and pois (a performance art in which balls suspended by flexible cord are held in the hand and swung in circular patterns). Flamenco Rhythms for Kids July 3, 2 p.m. (North Orchard) Kids can learn the basics of Flamenco, a style of music and dance which is considered part of the culture of Spain. Castanet Making July 3, 1-6 p.m. & July 4, 1-6 p.m. (HarbourKIDS Zone Tent) Kids can make their own castanet, a percussion instrument used in dance and music traditions around the world. SMIRNOFF BEATS, BREAKS & CULTURE presented by NOW Magazine (July 9 11) BBC takes on the "shuffle" philosophy of the ipod which incorporates many different musical tastes with endless possibilities. With a focus on global to local, Harbourfront Centre presents Canada's top cutting-edge icons that have made an international impact, as well as some global to local musical pairings. Breakin with Benzo July 10, 6:30 p.m. (HarbourKIDS Zone Tent) Benzo, a master break dancer from the Bag of Trix b-boy crew, teaches participants the basics of break dancing and how to create unique moves including popping and locking. Beats Breaks and DJ School DJ Workshop July 10, 4-5 p.m., July 11, 2:30-3:30 p.m. (Brigantine Tent) While sticking to the basic principles, foundations and theories that are essential in understanding music, Off Centre, one of Toroonto s leading DJ school s, pushes participants to think of self-expression and fun as the foundation of their DJ workshop.

EXPRESSIONS OF BRAZIL (July 16-18) Connecting Brazil and Canada, this festival showcases both international and local artists through music, dance, film, visual arts, theatre, family activities, workshops and culinary arts. Brazilian Drumming Workshop for all ages - by Bavia Arts Studio July 17, 2-3 p.m. & July 18, 2-3 p.m. (Lakeside Terrace) The Brazilian Drumming Workshop is a fun and exciting workshop where kids learn rhythmic skills and songs from various traditional styles of drumming. Participants learn about several different instruments including hand drums, bass drums, snare drums, shakers and bells. Pinhole Photography Workshop by ImageMagica July 17 & July 18, various times (Lakeside Terrace) In this workshop, kids learn about photography with a can! They are taught how the image is created, the difference between film, digital and cellular pictures and how to develop pictures. Participants also learn about ImageMagica, the Brazilian non-profit organization that uses photography as a tool for social transformation. Soccer Workshop by the Brazilian Soccer Academy July 18, 1 2 p.m. (Ann Tindall Lawn) Soccer coaches from the Brazilian Soccer Academy demonstrate the Brazilian style of soccer through kicks, passes and juggling. Participants will develop soccer skills through fun activities and mini soccer games. LOVE, SASKATCHEWAN (July 23-25) Toronto unites with Saskatchewan to break stereotypes and to celebrate the prairie province s arts and culture through Saskatchewan Roughrider pride, rodeo, cowboy culture and distinct Aboriginal artistic forms. Saskatchewan Pony Rides July 24, 1-5 p.m. & July 25, 1-5 p.m. (Red Path Lawn) Kids can enjoy an afternoon of pony rides. ISLAND SOUL (July 30 Aug. 2) Island Soul celebrates Caribbean culture through music, food and art in a weekend-long festival that bridges the gap between Canada and the Caribbean Islands. The Ultimate Steel Pan Experience Aug.1, 2 p.m. & 4:30 p.m. (HarbourKIDS Zone) Joy Lapps, the founder and programme director of the Steel Pan Experience teaches children how to play the steel drums, a unique and historically significant Caribbean instrument.

Conjo: Head Wrapping Expose and Workshop Aug.1, 4-6 p.m. & Aug.2, 2:30-4:30 p.m. (Lakeside Terrace Tent) Naza Hasebenebi (For the People) and Paulene Harvey (Big It Up) teach families how to create head-wraps, using different techniques and styles, and how to accessorize the head-wrap like royalty! Participants will also learn the history and significance of headwrapping. Carnival Faces Move to the Music Aug. 2, 1:30-5:30 p.m. (HarbourKIDS Zone & Ann Tindall Lawn) Kids can enjoy face painting inspired by Jenny Baboolal s photographs from the Children s Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago. Face painting is followed by a kids salsa workshop led by Caliente Drum and Danz and guest salsa champions. WHAT IS CLASSICAL? (Aug. 6 8) What is Classical? shines the spotlight on the evolution of classical music around the world through dance, and workshops. A Global Tour with Marie Gelinas and Ed Hayes of the TSO Aug. 7, 2 p.m. & Aug. 8, 2 p.m. (Marilyn Brewer Community Space) Families can travel through a global tour of musical cultures! Ed Hayes and Marie Gelinas get children involved in music making with percussion instruments. The Art and Craft of the Stringed Instrument Aug. 6, 1-6 p.m. & Aug. 7, 1-6 p.m. (HarbourKIDS Zone Tent) Participants can see how stringed instruments have changed with classical traditions around the world and make their very own to play alongside other musicians and at home! HOT & SPICY FOOD FESTIVAL Aug.13 15 The Hot & Spicy Food Festival explores all foods hot, spicy, sultry and sweet in a weekend-long food festival. Dig In! For Kidz Aug. 14, 1-6 p.m. & Aug. 15, 1-6 p.m. (HarbourKIDS Zone) With the help of local farmers, kids can learn how to grow their own food and take home a food plant that grows indoors. Kids Food Workshops Aug. 14 & Aug. 15 (Miss Lou s Room) Little ones can learn to cook at this special workshop.

FORTUNE COOKING FOOD FESTIVAL (Aug. 20 22) This inaugural festival explores the delicious diversity of Pan-Asian cuisine through demos, music and dance. The Art of Hand-Pulled Noodles Aug. 21, 4:30-5:30 p.m. (HarbourKIDS Zone Tent) Noodle specialist Chef Ken Sun of Sun s Kitchen leads a workshop for families to try their hand at the fine art of making La Mian (hand-pulled noodles). Origami Fortunes Aug. 21, 1-6 p.m. & Aug. 22, 1-6 p.m. (HarbourKIDS Zone Tent) Families can participate in a workshop led by the Origami Society of Toronto and learn the special art of creating origami fortune cookies. TELUS TAIWANfest (Aug. 27 29) Harbourfront Centre aims to celebrate and examine Taiwan s new cultural shift over the course of this weekend-long festival. Lantern Making Aug. 28, 1-6 p.m. & Aug. 29, 1-6 p.m. (HarbourKIDS Zone Tent) Kids can come and make their very own Taiwanese lantern! I-Wan-Jan Puppet Troupe Aug. 28, 1-2 p.m. & Aug. 29, 1-2 p.m. (Studio Theatre) Families can enjoy the story of the Monkey King while watching puppets twirl, jump and somersault from hand-to-hand. ASHKENAZ (Sept. 4 6) Ashkenaz celebrates contemporary Jewish music and art on the 15 th anniversary of this festival. The Schaecter Techter Sept. 5, 3 p.m. (Redpath Stage) Descendant of a profoundly influential family of American Yiddishists, Binyumen Schaecter plays piano and directs his two singing daughters, in a charming journey through Yiddish song entitled Our Bubbes and Zeydes as Children Parade Crafts with Shadowland Theatre (Toronto) Sept 5 & 6, 12-6 p.m. (HarbourKIDS Zone Tent) Help create the festival s largest work of art! Assisted by Shadowland Theatre, kids can create their own costumes and props.

Gerard Edery Everybody s Song Sept. 6, 1 p.m. (Lakeside Terrace Tent) Moroccan-born Sephardic music master introduces teenage audiences to the shared musical heritage of Jews, Christians and Muslims during the Golden Age of Spain reminding contemporary young people of the hope and possibility of coexistence, tolerance, respect and peace among all peoples. The Ashkenaz Parade Sept. 6, 4 p.m. (Redpath Stage) Propelled by the music of participating festival musicians, Shadowland Theatre transforms Harbourfront Centre into a swirling spectacle of music, dance, colour, puppetry, stilt-walking and performance. This year s edition celebrates the close musical and cultural interaction of Jewish and Roma people over the centuries in Eastern Europe and beyond.
