AUGUST- 2018 Page 5. RON S BLOG - CRITIQUING OF A PIPE BAND. Following the recent Live Streaming of the 2018 World Pipe Band Championships from Glasgow - we were again so fortunate to be able to listen to the measured comments by Bob Worrall, from Burlington Canada, on the completion of each competing band. Whilst not being up close and personal - he was in a booth close by and near the playing location. He is regarded highly in the world of Piping and Drumming, and his commentary certainly added greatly to this event. There are those who might consider they are experts, whether they play or have played an instrument or who just enjoy and have their thoughts and opinions. Viewing on television or from a crowd of observers is one thing; being closer to "the action" is of course something else. Those selected to adjudicate at events like the world's actually have the expertise and are people who have been officially trained. The art of critiquing of the overall pipe band performance is so important. They take on the pressure to assess a number of bands against those in the contest; they have to write such assessment of each band; taking into consideration outside pressures - activities in the area - and weather conditions. The other thing that those who watched and listened to Bob Worrall might have noted, was his terminology - when making his comments. To quote a few... ~ Fine Musical Impact ~ Nice Poise and Control ~ Good Integration between Corps ~ Strathspeys sometime Squarish ~ Great Support from the Snare line ~ Bright / Nicely Pitched ~ Loss of Chanter Tonal Stability When next you listen to your own band - why not try it yourself - put your "critique" hat on... and in the first instance just take into consideration three broad headings.. - INTRODUCTION - MUSICAL PERFORMANCE - INTONATION In the time it takes to listen to a MSR set see how you go. So much for now. More on member critiquing of your band in further blogs. Of course - as I always conclude I provide this information for those who might be interested. Ron C. Ferrier Ron C.
