HAIR Ed s letter In the words of Coco Chanel: A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life. This quote from the style icon resonates with me because for as long as I can remember, I wore my hair relaxed and long. Pretty much like my mother, who wore hers in a side swept and into a pony or French plaits. Then one day out of the blue, and without much thought, I walked into a salon and told my stylist to chop my hair. In the past, he d be the one suggesting something different and I d be reluctant. But this time, it was he who was unsure about the chop. So he started with an asymmetrical bob just in case short hair didn t sit well with me. But it did, and I loved it so much that on my next visit I asked him to take it further down into a pixie. That symbolised a fresh start and a new beginning at the helm of TRUE LOVE. With that snip also came the decision to go to gym and live a healthy lifestyle. When I look back, my hair has always been reflective of my headspace. Cutting it short was the beginning of a journey I needed to take. Lately, I ve gone as far as experimenting with colour and even tried an edgy boy cut. That has been bold. When reading our cover story, I realised that Luthando Shosha also took the plunge from long, relaxed hair when she opted for a drastic chop that became riskier with every cut, adding red and then going completely blonde. That s what this summer is about taking back your power and going wild with the latest styles. In this issue we have loads of trendy dos straight from runways and super hot celeb styles to show your stylist for a perfect coif. Blissful hair days are definitely here. Find your style. Enjoy the read. HAPPY HAIR DAYS, FRIENDS! Don t forget to leave wisps of hair along the hairline to create baby hairs or kiss curls. For variety, play with the direction of the plaits; anything asymmetrical goes. DESIGUAL FW15 DIY RELAXER For people who like to relax their hair straight, DIY relaxer kits can be the affordable styling solution. Follow these 10 fool-proof tips to make the process less daunting: KELIS THROWBACK Diana Ross s famed more-is-more curly hair is back in the spotlight. Designers such as Desigual, Karen Walker and Leanne Marshall all took inspiration for their autumn collections from the famed singer. In Celebville, starlets such as Solange, Kelis and Yaya DaCosta are all paying homage to the star. 1. Do not shampoo hair for about a week before relaxing it. Some shampoos contain ingredients that strip the oil barrier of your scalp, which leads to a burning sensation. 2. Do not comb, scratch or brush hair prior to relaxing, to avoid burning. 3. Have all the necessary equipment ready and close by, like towels and combs. The time spent processing your hair is very limited. 4. Ifyouhaven tusedthatspecificrelaxer before, donotskipthestrandtest! This isessentialtofindoutifyouareallergic to any ingredients that it contains. 5. Protect scalp and skin by using an emollient like Vaseline. 6. Yes, it s a tedious process, but read the instructions beforehand. Not all relaxers have the same steps. 7. Keep your eye on the time so you don t overprocess hair. 8. Rinse, rinse and rinse! Make sure all the relaxer is out of your hair. 9. If your hair s already relaxed, do not relax from root to tip. Apply relaxer to just the roots or new regrowth. This will ensure hair doesn t get damaged by overprocessing. 10.Do not skimp on the conditioner! It helps rebuild and strengthen hair.
