KNOWN MISUSES/ABUSES Contamination with Anionic emulsion will cause coagulation. 1 IDENTIFICATION OF THE SUBSTANCE/PREPARATION AND OF THE COMPANY/UNDERTAKING PRODUCT: COMPANY: ADDRESS: COLBOND 50, COLBOND 65, COLBREAK, COLNET LEOTAK, LEOTAK 30 COLAS LIMITED WALLAGE LANE, ROWFANT, CRAWLEY, WEST SUSSEX, RH10 4NF TELEPHONE: 01342 711000 EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBER: 01342 718346 2 COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS Colas tack and bond coats are preparations manufactured from bitumen, water and additives, none of which create any hazard.
3 HAZARD IDENTIFICATION Avoid skin and eye contact, ingestion and major inhalation. May harm fish. Colbond 65 is used hot so the temperature at which this material is used could cause serious scalds in contact with skin 4 FIRST AID MEASURES INHALATION: Minor inhalation - NOT likely to be harmful. Major inhalation (unlikely) - seek medical advice. SKIN: Minor splashes - remove from skin with suitable skin cleanser and wash with soap and water. In cases of major contact with large quantities of material drench immediately with cold water. EYES: Irrigate thoroughly with cold water and seek medical advice. INGESTION: (Unlikely) seek medical advice. 5 FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES Bitumen emulsion will not burn. 6 ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Shut off leak if without risk and contain. Absorb with sand or earth until set solid. Refer to section 13 for disposal information. 7 HANDLING AND STORAGE HANDLING: Colbond 50, Colbreak, Colnet, Leotak, Leotak 30 Mechanical handling of palletised products reduces the hazards of manual lifting. Where manual lifting is unavoidable use correct Kinetic lifting techniques. When pump to/from bulk containers take proper safeguards against pressure build-up. Check hoses and connections for serviceability. Excessive pumping may damage the product. Colbond 65 Wear heat resistant gloves and overalls and protective footwear. Protect eyes from splashes by wearing goggles or visor. Colas Ltd Health & Safety Information Sheet 2 of 5
This material is normally supplied and applied in bulk at 75 C - 85 C. If heating is required it should be done with re-circulation. Under NO circumstances should the temperature exceed 90 C (boiling/frothing). STORAGE: Drums should be adequately chocked to prevent rolling. Roll/agitate containers before use. Bulk tanks should be structurally sound and secure against accidental release. Protect from frost. 8 EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION EXPOSURE LIMIT VALUES There is NO Occupational Exposure limit in EH/40. RECOMMENDED PROTECTIVE CLOTHING: Wear suitable gloves to avoid injury during drum handling or contact with hot materials (if applicable) and skin contact when applying, overalls, protective footwear, eye protection. Use of barrier cream, before work, will assist subsequent cleansing. 9 PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Physical State: Liquid at ambient temperature Appearance: Opaque brown/black Odour: Characteristic Acidity/Alkalinity: Approx. 2.0 ph Boiling Point/Boiling Range: Approx 100 C (of emulsion water) Melting Point/Melting Range: Flashpoint: Flammability: Autoflammability: Flammability Limits - upper: - lower: Explosive Properties: Oxidising Properties: Vapour Pressure at 40 C: 5 mm Hg Density at 15 C: 0.95-1.05 g/ml Solubility - Water Solubility: Dispersible - Fat Solubility/Solvent: Water miscible solvents break the emulsion NONpolar solvents emulsify to a degree.
