INTERSECTION: INTIMACY AND SPECTACLE Scenography Expanding 1: On Spectatorship Paplašinātā scenogrāfija 1: Par skatīšanos February 25 27, 2010 New Riga Theatre, Latvia 2010. gada 25. 27. februārī Jaunajā Rīgas teātrī, Latvija Organised by New Theatre Institute of Latvia and Prague Quadrennial Rīko Latvijas Jaunā teātra institūts un Prāgas Kvadrinnāle Scenography Expanding SYMPOSIA 1 3 Riga Belgrade Évora 2010

Scenography Expanding Symposia Riga Belgrade - Évora 2010 Throughout the past decade, scenographic practice and performance design have continuously moved beyond the black box of the theatre toward a hybrid terrain located at the intersection of theatre, architecture, exhibition, visual arts, and media. This terrain and its spaces are constructed from action and interaction. They are defined by individual and group behaviour, and are contrasted by distinct behavioural patterns. It is proposed here that spaces that are staged in such a way spaces that are at the same time hybrid, mediated, narrative, and transformative result from a transdisciplinary understanding of space and a distinct awareness of social agency. These two factors of expansion are seen as the central driving forces in contemporary scenographic practice and thought. With the aim of initiating and hosting an active and transdisciplinary discourse on the notion of an expanded scenography, the Prague Quadrennial for Performance Design and Space issues an invitation for participation and a Call for Papers for the symposia and workshop sessions, Scenography Expanding 1-3 in 2010. Grouped under the overriding and programmatic title of Scenography Expanding, invited academic papers, artist s presentations and expert workshop sessions will be looking to engage with notions of spectatorship, artists/authors, and curating in relation to the diverse artistic positions in contemporary spatial design. In preparation for the Intersection Project of the Prague Quadrennial in June, 2011, we invite researchers in practice and theory (artists, curators, programers, directors, dramaturgs, critics, and theorists) to participate in 3 international scenography symposia held in Riga, Belgrade and Évora during 2010. The overall aim of these symposia is to unfold the wide range of disciplines, genres, theoretical, and artistic positions that comprise the relationships between spectator, artist/author and curator in contemporary scenographic/performance design practice. Scenography Expanding 1-3 will be followed up by a peer-reviewed publication. Next: Scenography Expanding 2: On Artists/Authors July 9 11, 2010; deadline for submission of abstracts: March 15, 2010 BELEF Center and Festival, Belgrade, Serbia Scenography Expanding 3: On Curating September 27 29, 2010; deadline for submission of abstracts: June 15, 2010 Festival Escrita na Paisagem and Centro de História da Arte e Investigação Artística (CHAIA), Évora, Portugal For more information on call for papers and update of programme please visit our websites: www.pq.cz, www.intersection.cz.

Scenography Expanding 1: On Spectatorship February 25 27, 2010 New Riga Theatre, Riga, Latvia Organised by New Theatre Institute of Latvia and Prague Quadrennial Scenography Expanding 1: On Spectatorship is the first in a series of three international symposia, conceptualized as enquiries into contemporary research on performance design and space. In the next three days, designers, curators, directors, choreographers, visual and media artists are presenting and discussing current modes of spectatorship. Looking at diverse scenographic, directorial and curatorial strategies in engaging audiences to embrace new and hybrid forms of viewing and participation, On Spectatorship proposes a transdisciplinary reflection on the negotiation of space and performative practice toward the reframing of traditional notions of the visitor, the listener, the audience and the spectator. Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space June 16 26, 2011 Prague, Czech Republic The Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space is the largest event of its kind in the world - presenting contemporary work in a variety of performance design disciplines and genres - costume, stage, light, sound design, and theatre architecture for dance, opera, drama, site specific, multi-media performances, and performance art, etc. Every four years, since it s establishing in 1967, the Prague Quadrennial has presented work from more then 70 countries, from five continents, in individual countries' expositions in three competitive sections the section of countries and regions, section of theatre architecture and student section. This large exhibition is accompanied by a wide spectrum of live events workshops, lectures, performances, discussions and presentations, and provides an in-depth exploration of contemporary theatre and performance design, creating space for meetings and exchange among thousands of performance and theatre professionals, students and spectators, who always attended the event. Over 12 000 square meters of objects, photos, videos and live performances of work in-between theatre and visual arts formed this unique live exhibition in 2007. With over 500 live events over the course of eleven days in the last edition, in June 2007, the PQ became more then an exhibition. The eleventh edition was the most successful in the history of 40 years of the PQ, according to the number of visitors and participating countries, including more then 1 500 students from all over the world who attended Scenofest - educational events organized in cooperation with the OISTAT. Intersection: Intimacy and Spectacle 2009 2012 Intersection: Intimacy and Spectacle is a special international project of the Prague Quadrennial that explores performance as an important element of different art and cultural disciplines, focusing on performance design and scenography as interdisciplinary field. The project will consist of two important parts: theoretical discussions as well as interactive installations and performances. Theoretical symposia are held in Zurich, Riga, Amsterdam, Belgrade and Évora, where leading theorists and artists are brought together to explore contemporary performance design in relation to various artistic and cultural as well as different forms and uses of performance from three different points of view: audience, artists and curators. The main event - the interactive installation/performance - will take place during the Prague Quadrennial in 2011, and will present thirty projects working with performance

and performance design. These projects will encompass a wide variety of forms and disciplines, housed in thirty white cubes / black boxes. The event will showcase scenographers, installation artists, theatre companies, video artists, fashion designers, and architects from all over the world. Three large performances in public spaces will also be part of this event, and will illuminate the contrast between the intimate relationship of spectators and art inside the cubes, and the spectacle outside the cubes. Accompanying these events will be fifty panel discussions, presentations, lectures and costume shows, and a series of forty workshops for fifteen hundred students of theatre and visual arts from around the world. Individual projects will also be presented at festivals in Hungary, Serbia, Latvia, Ireland, Great Britain, Estonia, Finland and Portugal during 2011 and 2012. www.intersection.cz www.pq.cz
