6 Empowering Leaders of Tomorrow Meet Tina*, a young teenager who, as a child, had a poor attitude towards studies and was generally disruptive in the classroom. Elementary school teacher, Christine*, first met Tina at the age of 10, and although Christine struggled with her disruptive behavior, she recognized Tina as a likeable child. Over the years, Christina noticed Tina was growing more defiant and less cooperative. After awhile, Christine observed a high level of anxiety and came to learn that much of it related to Tina s home life and poor interaction with peers. Tina s anxiety was rooted in having a perceived lack of control over her life, certainly at home. Christine realized Tina s issues, if left unchecked, were only going to get worse as she moved to junior high. Christine sought out help and guidance, which led her to Dr. Lycka. Sesame Cheese Thins Here at Barry Lycka MD & Associates, our newly expanded lunch room includes plenty of space for snacks! Our team wanted to have a tasty treat on-hand that wasn t too filling and easy to grab-and-go. PREP TIME: 15 minutes CHILLING: 2 hours or overnight BAKE TIME: 10 minutes SERVING SIZE: 7 dozen thins Ask Norma Norma has been working as Dr. Lycka s accountant for over 12 years and has become our resident pastry expert. WHAT YOU LL NEED: Baking sheet, ungreased 2 cups shredded old cheddar cheese ¼ cup butter, softened 2/3 cup flour ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. paprika ¼ tsp. salt 2 dashes hot pepper sauce 3 tbsp. sesame seeds HOW TO MAKE: 1. Preheat the oven to 425 F 2. Combine cheese and butter in a large bowl until smooth and creamy. Combine flour, baking powder, paprika and salt. Add to creamed mixture along with hot pepper sauce. Using two knives, a pastry blender or your fingers, blend mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead lightly to form a smooth dough. 3. Shape dough into a log about 9 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. Roll in sesame seeds, pressing seeds firmly into dough. Wrap in waxed paper and refrigerate until firm, 2 hours or over night. 4. Cut dough into 1/8-inch thick slices. Arrange on baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Serve warm or at room temperature. Recipe source: Robin Hood Baking

PRESENTED BY 11 Sun Safety THE TERRIBLE TRIO We talk a lot about skin cancer as a general term, but how much do you know about the different types of skin cancers and their unique characteristics? When it comes to proper sun safety, it s important to know how each type of skin cancer makes its mark on your skin so you know what to look for during routine self-exams. 1. 2. 3. BASAL CELL CARCINOMA (BCC): The most common form of skin cancer, BCC accounts for 90% of all skin cancers. Beginning in the basal cells at the bottom of the outer skin layer (epidermis), this disease is a result of long-term sunlight exposure, and is the most easily treated. WATCH FOR: a non-healing sore; a pearly bump that may be pink, red, white, brown or black; a pink growth with an elevated border and crusted middle; a scar-like spot with poorly defined borders. SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA (SCC): Less common than BCC, this type of skin cancer starts in the epidermis but will penetrate underlying tissue if left untreated. This disease is easily treated when found early, but can spread to other parts of the body. WATCH FOR: a wart-like, non-healing growth; a persistent, scaly red patch with irregular borders; an open sore that persists for weeks; an elevated growth with central depression that may rapidly increase in size. MALIGNANT MELANOMA: This type of skin cancer is less common than BCC and SCC, but by far the most serious, as it is responsible for the most deaths. Though it can be cured if diagnosed and removed early, malignant melanoma can develop as a new spot, or from a pre-existing mole, which makes it trickier to catch early. WATCH FOR: pre-existing moles that have changed in shape, colour or size; or a new spot that appears irregularly and is persistent.
