Lorrie has spent much of her life savings to provide for the children, but struggles to make ends meet. Sonya, 11, suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after years of living in squalor and being abused by her mother s boyfriends. My mother doesn t know how to be a mom, she says. scarred by men Farzana Hossen Winner For more than 2Å years Hossen was subjected to physical and mental abuse by the husband she believed loved her. With her family s support she was finally able to escape. Since then she has documented the stories of other women who have been the victims of domestic violence in her homeland of Bangladesh. Her latest project, Lingering Scars, the winner of this year s Ian Parry Scholarship, focuses on the scores of women disfigured in acid attacks. The Ian Parry Scholarship The scholarship was founded in memory of the 24-year-old photojournalist Ian Parry who died on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989. The annual competition is open to young photographers who are either attending a full-time photography course or are under 24. The first prize is 3,500 to be spent on an assignment, plus Canon equipment. The runners-up are each awarded 500.
