A message from Richard Taylor at Cancer Research UK I am delighted to welcome you to the Opera Gallery and this exciting joint exhibition of Marco Lodola and Zoobs. This special event brings together these bright talents from modern Italy, France and England, to support the life-saving work of Cancer Research UK. By supporting this event, you are all lending your energy, innovation and passion to achieve the vision we all share - together we will beat cancer. Thanks to cancer research more people are surviving cancer than ever before. In fact, in the last 30 years survival rates have doubled. Cancer Research UK has been at the heart of that progress. Our groundbreaking work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer has saved millions of lives across the world. But the sad fact remains that 300,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK and one in three of us will develop cancer at some point in our lives. At Cancer Research UK we want to stop people from losing their lives to cancer. To help us achieve this we have established ten goals that we aim to accomplish by 2020. Our goals include ensuring that people know how to reduce their risk of cancer; that cancer is diagnosed earlier and that patients have access to better treatments with fewer side-effects. The money we raise tonight will help us to continue our life-saving work so please dig deep, enter our prize draw or invest in some of the wonderful pieces of art on offer - arguably a more enduring investment in today s uncertain times. My grateful thanks goes to the organisers of the exhibition for their hard work and enthusiasm in making this event happen. I would also like to extend my thanks to each and every one of you for attending this evening - tonight your generosity is raising funds that will make a real difference to the lives of people with cancer. I hope you all have a wonderful evening. With very best wishes, Richard Taylor, Director of Fundraising A message from MICHAEL HADJEDJ at UNITED FIRST PARTNERS United First Partners have always been aware of our responsibilities to society. To this end we contribute every day a fixed percentage of our revenue to United First Charitable Foundation. We believe that great art is exemplified by creativity and freedom of expression. This is the same principle we apply daily to our bespoke investment solutions, tailored to the needs of our individual clients. We hope that the great art on display has inspired others to give generously towards this noble cause. We strongly believe that whatever proceeds are raised will not solely assist in finding a cure for cancer but in the age old quest to improve and extend the most precious resource of all - human life. United First Partners are both proud and privileged to be a partner in this exhibition. Michael Hadjedj, CEO of United First Partners 3
MARCO LODOLA Born in 1972 in London, UK, Zoobs explored the realm of fashion, photography, design vand art direction during his career before establishing himself as a visual artist. Studying Fine Art at the Slade School of Art (1991-92) and later gaining a degree in Graphic Design and Photography from Kingston University (1992-1996), Zoobs was awarded a priceless internship at Shiseido Cosmetics in Japan on the strength of his Art Directional skills combined with Photography and Design. This was followed by his appointment to work as a designer and photographer at the Paris Headquarters of the same company, assisting Serge Lutens, the then creative director for Shiseido. Taking inspiration from the theatrical shootings of Shiseido campaigns, the immaculately prepared models and the thought provoking creative direction of Serge Lutens, Zoobs moved on to further explore and immerse himself in the creative route of fashion photography and image making. Today, despite his inner inhibitions, Zoobs creates a surreal world, wrapped up in fantasy and dreamland, where each portrayed emotion is a reflection of the reality surrounding the artist himself. He travels extensively and incorporates different cultures and their representations into his images. Zoobs is also the co-founder of Freedom From Sorrow platform for raising awareness and funds for worldwide charities aiding children s welfare. Zoobs lives and works in London. Born in 1955 in Dorno, Italy, Marco Lodola attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and Milan. In the early 1980s, Lodola was the founder of New Futurismo movement, the main theorist of which was critic Renato Barilli. Over the years, the works of Lodola have been exhibited in major Italian and European cities - Rome, Milan, Florence, Vienna, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris and Amsterdam amongst others. He has worked on commission projects with companies like Swatch, Coke, Ferrari, Fiat, Juventus, Harley Davidson, Ducati, Carlsberg, Valentino and Illy. In 1994, Lodola was invited to exhibit his works in China within the premises of the former archives of the imperial city of Beijing. In 1996, Lodola began working in the United States - Miami and New York, before taking part in the XII Quadriennale di Roma and VI Biennale de Sculpture, Montecarlo. He has collaborated with various contemporary writers and musicians and in the summer of 1998, under the supervision of Saatchi & Saatchi, Lodola designed posters for the grand opera Tosca by Puccini, which were displayed at the Piazza del Popolo in Rome. In 2000, Lodola further explored his involvement in theatre and dance, being in charge of the Maximum Theatre in Palermo and realizing a video-documentary by Sergio Pappalettera. The luminous sculptures of Lodola, have appeared in public places such as the Palace of Fine Arts of Brussels, Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, at the international airport of City of Mexico and the Regional Museum of Guadalajara. Marco Lodola continues to work across a wide spectrum of creative fields and lives and works in Italy. In 2009, once again in Milan, in the Piazza del Duomo, he set up the Rock n Music Planet, Europe s first museum of rock, with twenty five sculptures representing the same number of legends of contemporary music. Some of his works were used in the scenography of the television programme Academy broadcast on RaiDue. He took part in the 53 rd Venice Biennale in 2009. 5
