THE WESTRALIAN ARTIST West Australian Society of Arts (Inc) Established 1896 Patrons: His Excellency Mr Malcolm McCusker AC CVO QC Governor of Western Australia & Mrs Tonya McCusker OCTOBER 2013 NEWSLETTER Copies of this and earlier newsletters are available to be read or downloaded from the WASA website. Follow this link: http://www.waart.org.au/. Please consider our environment and print only if you really need to. FROM THE PRESIDENT I won t have the pleasure of your company this month because I am having surgery which could keep me out of action for up to six weeks. In my absence you will be in the very capable hands of Chris Wiles who will attend to the duties of President. Attendances over the past two meetings have been at an all time low which is very disappointing particularly as we have had exceptional demonstrators. I know that the weather, exhibitions and overseas trips have been a contributing factor, but I hope that you will all endeavour to attend this and subsequent meetings where possible. The Society depends on your interest and support to go forward so please make an effort. This month s demonstrator is Lucy Papalia, a leading watercolourist and you will all benefit from watching her in action. Please attend and give her the support that she deserves. This seems to be a month for brickbats rather than bouquets. The Treasurer has furnished me with a list that shows over forty percent of subscriptions are unpaid. This means that those of you who are reading this and have not yet paid your subscriptions are very fortunate. After 30 September 2013 you are not entitled to any of the facilities and benefits of the society including displaying your paintings and this Newsletter. While we would be very reluctant to enforce this restriction we will expect those in default to rectify their situation as soon as possible. You can pay by forwarding a cheque to Ian Fagence, paying at the meeting, or electronically to the following BankWest Account: BSB 306305 Account Number: 4196018 Please ensure that the remittance shows your name (not a business name) so Ian can mark you off and forward a receipt.
In conclusion, and on a happier note, this month has seen quite a few of our members exhibit successfully both in sales and awards. Congratulations to all and thanks to those of you who have attended the meetings and to Pat Harley for providing us with refreshments. Best Wishes Peter CONSTITUTION The new Constitution has been registered by the Secretary with the Department of Commerce and took effect as of 8 August 2013. A copy of the Constitution will be provided to each member in due course. OCTOBER MEETINGS The next GENERAL MEETING will be held at 7:00pm on Thursday 17 October 2013 at The Palms, corner Rokeby & Nicholson Roads, Subiaco. There will be the usual White, Blue, Gold and Platinum competition and a demonstration. The next COMMITTEE MEETING will be held at 7:00pm on Monday 21 October 2013 at The Pavilion. OCTOBER DEMONSTRATION The demonstrator for the October meeting will be Perth-borne artist Lucy Papalia, a graduate of Perth Technical College with a Diploma of Graphic Design. Lucy is a member of several art clubs including the West Australian Society of Arts and the Watercolour Society of WA where she has served as President. She specialises in watercolours and teaches the subject, so we can expect a very informative demonstration. Page 2 of 6

VAL BROOKS DEMONSTRATION (Notes by Kieryn Kilminster) Our Demonstrator for September was Pastelist Val Brooks. Apart from her other subjects Val is renowned for her beautiful seaside scenes. It was such a scene that she undertook for this demonstration. Val paints on mattboard prepared with pastel primer. She works on dark paper and lets it show through where appropriate particularly for footsteps in the sand. She commenced by putting in the sky which she blends with her fingers but for the remainder of the painting she will blend with pastel on paper using a harder pastel to push in and blend the softer pastel already on the paper. The brands that she usually uses from hard to soft are in order Rembrandt - Art Spectrum - Sennellier with Schminke as the softest. Having completed the sky she then she put in the sea, blurring the horizon line with her finger to give a sense of distance. Using darker tones she then defined the sand hills. Flinders Blue Violet was used for dark tones and Mountvision dark blue for the darkest shadows. The lights were created by using Art Spectrum Soft White with appropriate colours to create from orange to pinky colours depending on the tone. Directional strokes were used to create shape. Placing two colours next to each other can work better than a single colour as they vibrate against each other. Val does not use fixative but uses Glasene paper to press into the painting to push the pigment into the paper. She then shakes off the excess. Her simple summary is it all comes down to putting the right colour scribble in the right place. It was a beautiful demonstration which those present were privileged to see: Val's completed pastel > Page 4 of 6
