Kents Furniture Shop Anyone who knows Hednesford well will know of Kents furnishers. Kents is probably the longest established business in Market Street. The family business principle was, and still is simple. Buy good quality second hand household furniture and sell it on to a good home. In many ways it was the original form of recycling. The Kent family business began in 1940 in the front room of a small terraced house on the Belt Road. The founder of the business, Evelyn Kent saw huge potential in the simple idea of buying and selling second hand quality furniture. By the end of the second world war, Evelyn s little empire grew to the point that she needed to recruit her husband, Charles Senior to help out. With her husband s help, the business flourished. On retirement, Charles and Evelyn passed on the family business to their children, Charles junior and Christine. Little did Evelyn know that over 70 years later, her grandson, Richard would still be successfully running this great family business from a large showroom in the heart of Hednesford s Market Street. Today, Richard continues where his family left off, selling quality second hand furniture in addition to a selection of brand new items. His Mom and Dad, Jill and Charles junior, still help out and regularly hold the fort while Richard and his team are out in That Van Again, making deliveries or collections. If you have items of furniture to sell or are looking to buy household furniture from beds to bookshelves, you should check out a small piece of Hednesford s history. Kents Furnishings, 68-70 Market Street, Hednesford. 01543 485 International Aid Trust Shoebox Appeal Thanks for your support of all the charity shops in Hednesford. Send a smile, to a child. Imagine a year without presents! For most of the UK this is almost unheard of. For some children in the poorer parts of the world the gift of a shoebox is a dream come true, or an answer to a prayer. This is why International Aid Trust deliver shoeboxes throughout the year, not just at Christmas. Many people think that these gifts are just a little extra present for the needy people that receive them, but for most of the recipients these are the only gifts that they will ever receive. Many of the gifts go to orphanages and rescued children s centres which IAT have established. Here, orphans and other homeless children are in real, ongoing, genuine need. To find out what you can put in and how to send a shoebox gift to those less fortunate than ourselves, please go into International Aid Trust at 46 Market Street, Hednesford. WS1 1AG and see Pat or Denis for an information pack or you can see everything on their website http://www.internationalaidtrust.org.uk/fundraising/shoebox-appeal Disclaimer. Hednesford Town Council Information Technology Training Opportunity Over the years the Town Council has assisted many local people to come to grips with new technology by offering free training in use of word processing, spreadsheets and the internet. Following the improvements to the Pye Green Community Centre, the Town Council has plans to re-launch a new Information Technology (IT) Suite early in the New Year. Cllr Doris Grice said It is important that everyone has the opportunity to learn how to use computers more and more things these days are accessed on line. The training the Town Council is offering is basic and will be provided in an informal friendly atmosphere. The upgraded IT suite will have internet-ready workstations for up to 3 trainees per session (participants may bring their own laptops if they wish) Sessions can be held morning, afternoon or evening and will be scheduled according to demand. P A G E 8 Scan for Ji s website Ji s Hair & Beauty Studio Re-Opens After previous owner of Ji s salon, Denise Powell, fell seriously ill, and being closed for over 10 weeks, things looked bleak for the future of the salon, but now, with Denise back at home and thankfully well on the way to recovery, Ji s has reopened under the new management of Theresa Drury who brings some stateside p zazz with her. Theresa hails from Palm Beach, Florida and has been in the hair and beauty industry for 5 years and is as passionate now about making people look and feel good as when she started. Theresa is currently living in Birmingham city centre, but after experiencing what a warm and friendly place Hednesford is, she will soon be moving here. Theresa says Since re-opening regular customers are starting to filter back to us and everyone has been really pleased with the service they have received. We have also been able to create new jobs in town, Dawn (left) is an excellent beauty therapist who shares my passion, and clients have been really impressed with her facials and hot stone therapy massage and Sally-Anne (right) has been taken on and is a fantastic junior. We have all been so pleased with all the support we have been given and things are going really well. As a special thank-you, Ji s will now be having a Senior s Day every Tuesday offering all seniors any service for half price. Please contact us. 0757785750 Hednesford Lions Club. Hednesford Lions are a newly formed club branch. Our numbers as yet are small but we are already supporting projects and events in Hednesford. Our plans are exciting and based in the community. Members of Lions Clubs are ordinary men and women who wish to put something back into their community by making a difference to the lives of others, and having fun in the process. Whilst Lions Club International is a world-wide organisation, a local club s focus is their community. In June 015, the spotlight will fall on Belgium and the commemorative celebrations of the 00th anniversary of the Duke of Wellington s defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo. Hednesford has a unique right to share the spotlight and hold it s own celebrations due to it s connection with Lord Uxbridge. The Earl of Uxbridge was second in rank to the Duke of Wellington and led an important charge in the battle. After the battle, he was created Marquis of Anglesey and returned home to Beaudesert to a hero s welcome. Many local places bear his name to this day. Meetings regularly take place at the Hen House in Eskrett Street so if you would like to know more, call 01543 4346 or visit www.lions105bs.org.uk Naughty Calendar? Those of you of a sensitive disposition may wish to look away now! TRADERS 013 NAUGHTY CALENDAR ON HOLD.. Have your say on the hottest issues of the day. Hednesford traders association chairman, Simon Orme, came up with the bright idea of producing a calendar girl style calendar to promote the traders in the town. As the instigator of this crazy idea it was down to him to lead the way and pose for the camera. With the help of smoke, mirrors and a carefully placed hairdryer, the deed was done. Mr January was born. Now to recruit eleven more traders to make the calendar complete. Initially fellow traders seemed keen, that was until they had seen the Mr January pose. Was this type of pose appropriate? Would it create the right image for the traders in the town? Did the hairdryer really need to be that big? Some traders point blank refused, others seemed keen until they had seen the Mr January shoot, and the number of traders who were still keen meant that the 013 Hednesford traders calendar would have only run until April. Should the traders forget this crazy idea or push to get a calendar out for 014? If the calendar were produced and sold to raise money for a local charity, would you buy a copy? Let us know what you think, if you would like to see the photo that shocked Hednesford traders, log on to the Hednesford Traders face book page and like/dislike. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
