Editor s note We re all one human family, so when they kill a son, it s your son. When they rape a young girl, it s your daughter. When they kill a mother, it s your mother. It s our responsibility to create the scientists and engineers of the future who can be employed by initiatives such as the Square Kilometre Array telescope. July is always the month when we focus on education and this year, besides our usual listing of top private and public schools around the country (p140), we include a number of features exploring what is, what isn t and what should be happening in classrooms around our country. July is also the month when we launch Ndalo Media's latest website, www.goodschoolsreport.com, the new digital home of the print supplement we've been running for nearly a decade. This development gives us the opportunity to run more encompassing and detailed school profiles, alongside useful news and advice for parents and teachers alike. We're proud that the website's being launched in association with the Department of Basic Education and hope it provides a valuable resource for our readers. Funding Your Child s Education (p88) explains how to save systematically in order to cope with rising school and university fees, while our fashion feature, The Preppy Life (p42), presents fabulous, campus-inspired styles. Our reader s column, The Hidden Cost of a Good Education (p73), explores an interesting aspect of Westernised schooling: the neglect of indigenous language. While all parents strive to give their children the best possible foundation for a successful future, it s important to compensate for an all-english school environment by exposing youngsters to their cultural heritage and reinforcing their ethnic identities. Last, but by no means least, Shaping Young Lives (p104) profiles some of the country s most dynamic educators. When it comes to dynamism, we need look no further than Miss Salon London owners Azania Mosaka, Ego Iwegbu and Linda Jangulo, who are featured on our cover this month (p22). They're powerful role models for young women of what can be achieved with the right skills, perseverance, confidence and vision. Another inspiring role model is humanitarian Dr Marguerite Maggy Barankitse (Powerhouse, p67), the "Angel of Burundi" who's been compared with Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa with good reason. Her selfless devotion to young war victims of her native Rwanda and its neighbouring state, Burundi, has saved hundreds of lives and restored hope and health to many more. While education is one of SA s most urgent priorities since our country depends on the quality and leadership of future generations we need to note that no school, however excellent its staff, noble its ideals or replete its resources, can replace the incubation of real learning, which is the home. The examples we set for our children in our everyday behaviour and values are what truly mould young minds and characters. Ndalo Media is proud to be an official partner of UNICEF Unite for Children

Fashion BY Asanda Sizani STYLE MUSE CONFIDENCE MMANAKA KELOBONYE (30) IS A JOHANNESBURG-BASED ACTUARIAL SPECIALIST IN THE INSURANCE SECTOR AT ABSA LIFE. A CREATIVE SOUL AT HEART, HER PERSONAL STYLE REFLECTS HER GLOBETROTTER SPIRIT AND MODERNIST APPROACH TO FASHION My key job responsibilities lie in the product development space, where I m a manager. This largely entails pricing products, aligning them to the company strategy and seeking ways to improve them. My side hustle is selling clothing and styling. I d like to use my blog (www.mmanaka.com) to explore a more solid hustle. I got here by obtaining a degree, majoring in actuarial science, at the University of the Witwatersrand. I then took a gap year to prepare for actuarial exams, during which time I studied at the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries [IFoA]. I also travelled to the USA and Kenya, taught mathematical statistics at the British International College for a month or two and held pop-up sales of clothing, accessories and bags I d purchased in New York. I obtained my Honours degree at Wits University the following year. My first job after graduating was at Ernst & Young, where I only lasted a few months because I didn t enjoy consulting. I moved to Sanlam Emerging Markets, where my responsibilities were mainly in statutory and embedded value-reporting, experience investigations and budgeting for several African countries. I learnt important business and people skills in that role. I m now writing exams at IFoA to obtain fellowship and become a qualified actuary. My personal style is based on classic elegance. I enjoy expressing it boldly with creativity and confidence. My fashion ethos was shaped by my mother and her siblings, whose individual styles strongly influenced me during my childhood. My best travel experiences were in Bali in 2016 and Cuba earlier this year, when I travelled alone for the first time. Solo travel is really liberating. It enabled me to leave my comfort zone and connect with locals in places I visited. Those experiences enriched my life and helped me define what success means to me. In my wardrobe, you ll find multiple one- shoulder tops and dresses. You ll also find many great pairs of flats. This season, I m wearing lots of hats and head-wraps. My Instagram style crushes are Miroslava Duma, Tamu McPherson, Solange Knowles and Jenna Lyons. The best gift I ever received was a holiday on which my mom took me to Thailand and Singapore in 2008. It included activities like a boat cruise to Phi Phi Island and riding a cable car to Sentosa. The one indulgence I can t live without is travelling. It s one of the most fulfilling experiences in life and it doesn t have to be abroad: I ve been to fabulous local places and there are many more I still want to visit. We live in a beautiful country with a great deal to explore. My next obsessions are finding unique items and possibly getting my own designs made. I m about to experiment with clothing, with a view to getting back into the pop-up sales scene.
