COLOURED GEMSTONES, PEARLS, JADE AND AMBER Prospective buyers of coloured gemstones should be aware that some stones might have been treated to enhance their colour or clarity. Sapphires and rubies are commonly heat-treated and emeralds are commonly oiled. In the case of heat treatment, this is permanent but can affect the durability of the stones. In the case of oiling, this may need to be redone after a period of years. The international jewellery trade has generally accepted these methods. It is not possible for Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood to obtain gemmological reports on stones offered for sale and so prospective buyers should assume all gemstones may have been enhanced by some method. Rentnow, London, No. 1341, for John Wontner, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals and gold hands, the gold-plated case stamped to the inside with the case maker s initials I.W., with a gold-plated and tortoiseshell outer pair-case inset with pinwork, diameter 5.5cm. * 400-600 Biography John Wontner was a maker of some repute working in the Minories, London, becoming a Freeman of the Clock Makers Company in 1770 and a Liveryman in 1792. He often signed his clocks and watches with the reverse of his name, as in this case. Other examples are displayed in the Glasgow Art Gallery and in the Courtney Ilbert Collection of clocks & watches which was acquired by the British Museum in 1958. His son, also John, was apprenticed to him in 1798 and they were in partnership from 1805. John Snr died in 1807 at which point his son became a Freeman. 64
