Friday Night Demonstration: Shane Stegmeier Shane is a blacksmith, and farrier living in Gaston, Indiana. He began blacksmithing in earnest in 1985, making a nasal helm, pattern welded Damascus knives, and forge welded axe heads, while still in high school. In 1990 he moved to California, and spent a year working temp jobs while being a starving artist blacksmith with his best friend Ernie Leimkuhler. Returning home to Indiana he met his wife and settled down. In 1995 he began an apprenticeship with Jim Keith, and has been a fulltime farrier since then. The Friday Night Demo will be an updated and expanded version of the 1 hour class he did years ago at SOFA. What to do with a Farrier s Rasp: other than make an Asp The demo will begin with a discussion of psychology and design philosophy, and then will use rasps to explore these concepts. There are lots of creative uses that an old rasp can be turned into. Shane is really hoping he can inspire you with some of the ideas and applications he has come up with.

Demonstrator Michael Bendele Delphos, OH www.michealbendele.com Michael Bendele has been working metal, ferrous and nonferrous, for over 38 years. His work extends from small vessels and cabinet hardware to large architectural pieces. Michael s demonstration will focus on tips and techniques he has developed, adapted, borrowed, and stolen over the past 38 years working full time.

The demonstration will be a mixture of approaches to design and problem solving, as well as dealing with potential customers, architects, or designers. He will use both power and hand forging, and discuss the basic, general, and specific tooling for both. Michael plans to forge steel on Saturday, and nonferrous metals, mainly, 464 naval brass, 377 forging brass, 655 silicon bronze, and 260 cartridge brass, and copper, on Sunday.

Demonstrator Saturday Only Phoebe Graham Phoebe Graham is the IBA 2014 Rookie of the Year. Phoebe hails from Greentown, IN with husband Brandon and children Uriah and Opal. Brandon sparked her interest in blacksmithing. That interest became much more serious after meeting Jeff Farmer at Pontiac a few years ago. Phoebe s love of blacksmithing stems from the ability to express herself combined with the ability to exercise frustrations. The demonstration content will be a surprise, but it is guaranteed to be fun with plenty of joking and laughter. Auction Please support IBA s auction and raffle with your items. Your support is very much appreciated Auction items bringing over$100 are eligible for 50/50 split with the item donor

Demonstrator Saturday Only Dick Fisher Engraving Dick Fisher of Speedway, IN will be offering a demonstration and discussion on engraving. Dick has taken engraving classes at GRS in Kansas and at NRA engraving class. He has also studied the styles of Mike Dubber and John Shipper. Dick will discuss various pneumatic and hand engraving systems. He will also discuss forging your own engraving tools. Beginner s Class The Jean Eichhorn Beginning Blacksmith Class will be instructed by Keith Hicks and will be assisted by a cast of others. This will take place in 2 sessions on Saturday, a morning and an afternoon session lasting 4 hours each. Sunday morning session will be added if needed. Preregistration is preferred but not necessary. Persons who are pre-registered will have first priority. Must be a male or female between 6 and 123 years of age. Experience not necessary at all. Safety glasses will be required, parental permission for those under the age of 18, and must be an IBA member for insurance liability purposes. There will be no charge for this class. Regardless of level, we will be starting with the absolute basics and hopefully this will be entertaining as well as informative

Demonstrator Nathan Robertson Max, MN jpine@paulbunyan.net Nathan started blacksmithing in 1998. Tools were his biggest interest. The following year he had a 50 lb Little Giant and the start of a metal shop. In 2000 Nathan started making hammers. As of late October 2014 he has forged just shy of 4200 hammers of all types and sizes and hundreds of other tools. Nathan has taught classes all over the country. His main interest is flat die forging and tooling with power hammers. He has gathered information over the years from smiths like Clifton Ralph, Bob Bergman, Steve Parker, and Phil Cox.

Nathan s demonstration will cover tool design, making drifts, numerous ways of putting holes in handled tools (and finishing those tools), some power hammer tooling, some hot plate bowl raising, stamping, and some simpler quick and dirty projects to break up the monotony.

Gallery Exhibition Items The exhibition gallery is a popular venue. Be sure to bring blacksmith work, antique tools and related items from your collection for others to view.

Tinsmithing Class with Dennis Kutch When Dennis Kutch was a young boy, he was fascinated by the work that took place in the back room of the Odon Hardware. In that back room was a man operating old tools powered by hand that bent, cut, rolled and folded pieces of thin metal into stove pipes and heating ducts. They were the tools of a tinsmith. Dennis will share his knowledge of tinsmithing by leading a full day class on Saturday. Project details and sign up will be available at the conference. Space will be limited, so be sure to sign up early.
