1 Italian 116: Syllabus (Programma di insegnamento) Spring 2017 Prof. Jonathan Druker e-mail: j.druker@ilstu.edu Office: 240 Stevenson Hall telephone: 438-7978 Office hours: Tuesdays, 11:30-12:30, and Thursdays, 2:00-3:00, or by appointment Prerequisite: Italian 115 or equivalent Course goals: In Italian 116, students develop speaking and listening skills demanded in everyday situations, sharpen reading skills as they learn about Italian culture, and study grammar and composition at an intermediate-advanced level. (4 credits) Required Textbook: Immagina: L italiano senza confini (2 nd Edition), published by Vista Higher Learning. NOTE: You must bring this textbook to every lesson. You must purchase the textbook package that includes access to the online workbook (the WebSAM); request ISBN 978-1-62680-893-5. Your book will come with a Websam passcode. To create a user account, go to www.vhlcentral.com. Required Work (and grade calculations): 1) Daily preparation and classroom performance: 10% of your grade 2) 23 homework assignments 20% 3) 4 chapter tests: 40% 4) 3 compositions: 15% 5) Oral final examination: 5% 6) Written final examination: 10% 1) Daily preparation and classroom performance: To do well in oral and written performance in class, you will need to study and memorize material from the textbook and carefully complete the Workbook and Laboratory Manual assignments. The material for study for each lesson, which is listed by date in this syllabus, must be done in advance of our class meetings. (In Homework assignments, discussed below, you will see that homework is due by midnight on the due date.) Class attendance is required. However, your first two absences will be excused. (I will not concern myself with the reason for your absences.) After that, being absent might lower your course grade since a day missed yields a classroom performance score of zero for that lesson. You are responsible for the work done in class even if you are absent. Begin by doing the work indicated on the syllabus for the day missed. Classroom civility: Please arrive on time, turn your cell phone off, and refrain from eating or drinking (except water or maybe coffee). 2) Homework assignments ( Compiti ): Homework assignments are listed on the syllabus and also on the textbook website (Log in at www.vhlcentral.com.) They must be submitted electronically and are due by midnight on the date listed (under ordinary circumstances). Late work: You will receive partial credit for work submitted late, as long as you do so before the test on the chapter in question. Note: I strongly advise that you do all of the other exercises available at the textbook website even though they will not be graded.

2 3) Chapter tests ( Esami ): These challenging tests, one for each of for chapters 6-9 ( lezioni 6-9 ), will take about 40 minutes. The material covered in chapter 10 will be tested on the written final examination. 4) Compositions ( Composizioni ): Three due dates are on the syllabus. A separate handout will list the composition topics and explain how to write the compositions. Note: Electronic translation programs may not be used. However, I encourage the use of electronic dictionaries. Here is a good online dictionary (both Italian and Italian-English) that also has other useful language tools: www.garzantilinguistica.it. You will need to create an identity and a password. Another Italian- English dictionary is available at www.wordreference.com. 5) Oral final examination: This consists of a 10 minute, one-on-one conversation with the professor in the last week of the semester. 6) Written final examination: Half of test is cumulative so it is a good idea to spend a little time each week reviewing material already learned; the other half is over chapter 10.
