Perm African type hair Through this unit you will learn how to develop your rearranging and perm winding techniques for African type hair. You will demonstrate the main sectioning winds for perming which are directional and brick winding and a rearranging service on either virgin or chemically treated hair. Being able to identify the condition of your client s hair, skin and scalp will determine which products and technique to use. Part of this service is to provide your client with good aftercare advice. _v5

From the range, you must show that you have: used all the products in the range questioned clients on all the areas on contra-indication listed carried out all the tests in the range covered all the analysis areas listed in the range considered all the factors listed in the range carried out rearranging on 2 out of the 3* types of hair listed in the range used both sectioning and winding techniques in the range that you have given all the types of advice listed in the range. * However, you must prove to your assessor that you have the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to be able to perform competently in respect of all the items in this range. 5. It is likely most evidence of your performance will be gathered from observations made by your assessor but you may be required to produce other evidence to support your performance if your assessor has not been present. 6. Knowledge and understanding in this unit will be assessed by an external paper. The criteria that make up this paper are highlighted in white throughout this unit. There is one external paper that must be achieved. 2. You must practically demonstrate in your everyday work that you have met the standard for perming African type hair. 3. Your assessor will observe these aspects of your performance on at least 2 occasions for rearranging, perming and neutralising processes. 3

Achieving observations and range Achieving observation outcomes Your assessor will observe your performance of practical tasks. The minimum number of observations required is indicated in the evidence requirements section of this unit. Maximum service times The following maximum service times apply to this unit: Winding pre-dampened hair only 35 minutes Criteria may not always naturally occur during a practical observation. In such instances you will be asked questions to demonstrate your competence in this area. Your assessor will document the criteria that have been achieved through oral questioning. Your assessor will sign off an outcome when all criteria have been competently achieved in a single client service. Achieving range The range section indicates what must be covered. Ranges must be practically demonstrated as part of an observation. Your assessor will document the portfolio reference once a range has been competently achieved. 4

Wear personal protective equipment when using perming and neutralising chemicals c. Position the client to meet the needs of the service without causing them discomfort d. Keep the work area clean and tidy throughout the service e. Remove waste immediately at the end of the perming and neutralising service f. Use safe working methods that make effective use of resources g. Maintain personal standards of health and hygiene which minimise the risk of crossinfection, infestation and offence to the clients and colleagues h. Outcome 2 Be able to analyse the hair and prepare for either a rearranging or perming and neutralising service a. Identify if the client has any contraindications to perming services* b. Conduct and record outcomes of all necessary tests following manufacturers instructions and recognised industry procedures c. Determine the choice of products and application methods d. Seek assistance from the relevant person(s) when contra-indications and/or reactions to tests cause doubts as to the suitability of the service for the client* e. Make recommendations based on an accurate evaluation of the client s hair and its potential to achieve the effect required f. Inform the client of the likely cost, duration and expected outcome of the service g. Choose products, tools and equipment based on the results of the analysis, necessary tests, consultation with the client and relevant factors influencing the service h. Prepare products following manufacturers instructions i. Make sure shampooing leaves the hair free from product build-up j. Protect the hairline and scalp prior to service k. Apply suitable pre-service treatment from root to end to even out the porosity* *May be assessed through oral questioning. Outcome 3 Be able to chemically rearrange hair a. Section the hair cleanly and evenly to assist the accurate application of the chemical rearranger b. Apply products accurately and safely, taking into account the results of the analysis and other factors influencing the service c. Follow manufacturer s instructions to time the application and development of the chemical re-arranger d. Take strand tests to confirm the consistency and evenness of straightening has been achieved e. Remove chemicals in a way which minimises the risk of damage to the hair and following manufacturers instructions f. Adapt the water temperature, pressure and direction to protect the hair condition g. Leave the hair and scalp clean and free from chemicals and excess moisture h. Leave the hair tangle-free without causing damage to the hair or scalp *May be assessed through oral questioning. Outcome 4 Be able to perm and neutralise hair a. Use products and sectioning and winding techniques taking into account relevant factors influencing the service b. Section and wind the hair cleanly and evenly to achieve the desired look c. Secure any hair not being wound so as to keep the section clearly visible when required d. Apply pre or post damping products evenly to the hair following manufacturers instructions e. Take meshes of hair which suit the size of the perming implement f. Maintain an even tension throughout the winding process g. Complete all winding operations within 35 minutes when using pre-damping products h. Follow manufacturer s instructions to monitor and time the development of the perming process i. Take development test curls to confirm the required degree of curl has been achieved j. Remove products ensuring the water pressure does not dislodge the perm implements and the water temperature suits your client s comfort needs k. Leave the hair free of perm lotion when the desired degree of curl is achieved l. Remove excess moisture before applying neutraliser without disturbing the wound hair m. Distribute the neutraliser evenly following the manufacturer s instructions n. Remove the perm implements without disturbing the curl formation o. Leave the hair free of neutraliser after the final rinse p. Apply suitable activators and moisturisers at the end of the perming process q.
