Presented by Folk City Tattoo and Twisted Ink magazine, the event celebrates all aspects of the tattooing industry and welcomes talented artists from across the country. The cost of each tattoo is in addition to the entrance fee and is negotiated between customer and artist. Please note that many artists book fast and the best way to secure a tattoo at the festival is to set appointments with artists before the event. Three contestants from the second season of InkMaster will be tattooing at the festival, including Jesse Smith of Loose Screw Tattoo, Lalo of Lalo Tattoos, and Kay Kutta. Ink Master is a reality television show airing on the Spike network in which tattoo artists compete in challenges assessing their tattoo and related artistic skills. Judges include Dave Navarro (of Jane s Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers fame), Chris Núñez (Miami Ink), and Oliver Peck (Elm Street Tattoos). This year, the festival will feature several new contests and activities, including the Inaugural Little Tikes Temporary Tattoo Contest, Children s Art Camp, and the Skate Deck Contest. The Little Tikes Tattoo Contest (ages 12 and under) will take place on Sunday, March 3 with up to 30 participants receiving a ribbon. First, second, and third place will receive trophies. The Children s Art Camp will offer kids an opportunity to make their own art and explore other creative activities. Finally, the Skate Deck Contest will feature 20 skateboard decks decorated by tattoo artists. Attendees will have the
Page 4 chance to vote for their favorite design. The winning artist will receive all 20 decks. Another big highlight of the festival is the Second annual Miss Hampton Roads Pin-Up Girl Contest. This year, voting begins on Monday, February 4 at www.fm99.com. Of the submissions, nine candidates will be chosen to compete at the finals, to be held at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2 (over $1500 in cash and prizes, $500 cash for first place). Interested parties should submit photos at http://fm99.upickem.net/engine/yoursubmission.aspx?contestid=82292. Contestants are encouraged to dress in pin-up inspired garb of the 50 s, 60 s, and 70 s. In addition to all of the scheduled activities and events, the Hampton Roads Tattoo Arts Festival is happy to welcome the Dr. Thaddeus P. Zanzibar s Olde City Sideshow. According to www.oldecitysideshow.com, Dr. Zanzibar s Olde City Sideshow is a fully scalable immersion performance that encompasses the Old City stylings of Vaudeville, Burlesque, and the historical sideshow acts mixed with Philadelphia s counter-culture influences. The group will play the Fourth annual Minneapolis Tattoo Arts Convention and 15 th annual Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention before performing for the crowds at the Hampton Roads Convention Center. Other highlights of this year s festival include daily categorized tattoo contests, art vendors, tattoo supply vendors, a Shoot the Freak Paintball Game, and more. For the second year in a row, Team TDH will demonstrate the art of human suspension with several do-not-miss performances.
