Joan Brossa and Rosemarie Castoro, protagonists of the autumn season at MACBA The monographic exhibitions Brossa Poetry, which will focus on the performative aspects of Brossa s poetic practice, and Rosemarie Castoro, the first major retrospective dedicated to the North-American artist, are two of the most outstanding highlights. The new exhibition MACBA Collection. Beneath the Surface will feature works related to the problems of representation and its limits, as well as the relevance and incidence of the artist and art in contemporary society. The works of the Collection will travel to 9 municipalities in the province of Barcelona, thanks to an agreement with the Diputació de Barcelona, in the touring exhibition Enthusiasm. Challenge and Obstinacy in the MACBA Collection, curated by David Armengol. October sees the project by Ramin and Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian, winners of the latest edition of the Fundación Han Nefkens- MACBA Prize.

BROSSA POETRY Press conference: 19 September, 11.30 am MACBA Dates: 20 September 2017 25 February 2018 Curators: Pedro G. Romero, Teresa Grandas This monographic exhibition of Joan Brossa (Barcelona, 1919 1998) brings together more than 250 works, and a wide selection of documentation from the Brossa Fonds, in a showing that demonstrates the consolidation of Brossa s artistic language through his visual experiments, books, theatre, film, music and performance. Brossa is a poet, but his works are always at the crossroads of languages. Therefore, the exhibition focuses on his poiesis, his way of doing. In this sense, with his poetry as the common thread, it reveals some of the antecedents, his relations with other artists such as Miró, Tàpies, Pere Portabella, Josep M. Mestres Quadreny and Carles Santos, and selects examples of his production that situate the work and put it in dialogue with artists such as Marcel Mariën, Nicanor Parra and Ian Hamilton Finlay. Performativity will be key, as performances will take place in the Museum galleries throughout the months of the Brossa exhibition as part of the activities around it. In 2011, the Museu d Art Contemporani de Barcelona received the long-term loan of the Fonds of the Fundació Joan Brossa, bringing together the legacy of this artist. This Fonds includes handwritten manuscripts, documents, correspondence and his personal library, among other material. With the support of: In collaboration with: MACBA COLLECTION 33: Beneath the Surface Press conference: 9 October, 11.30 am MACBA Dates: 11 October 2017 to October 2018 Curator: Antònia M. Perelló

MACBA Collection. Beneath the Surface brings together works that focus on the problems deriving from representation and its limits, as well as the relevance and incidence of the artist and art in contemporary society. Although from different conceptual and formal approaches, many of these pieces share references to Conceptual art, forms derived from Minimalism and a contemporary fascination with material and surface. Beneath the Surface, and hence the title, examines the interest in aspects beneath which lie contents of a very different nature. It is worth mentioning the performatic component that permeates some of the works. The exhibition, curated by Antònia M. Perelló, MACBA s Head of the Collection, will be integrated by works of various formats and typologies by artists such as Ignasi Aballí, Antoni Tàpies, Lucio Fontana, Karla Black, Art & Language, Angela de la Cruz, Derek Jarman, Latifa Echakhch, Félix González-Torres, Charlotte Posenenske, Rita McBride, Gregor Schneider, Doris Salcedo and Michelangelo Pistoletto, among others. FROM SEA TO DAWN, second Fundación Han Nefkens-MACBA Prize Exhibition of the artist collective formed by Ramin and Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian Press conference: 27 October, 11.30 am MACBA Dates: 28 October 2017 8 January 2018 The second edition of the prize, inaugurated in 2011, was awarded to the Iranian collective formed by Ramin and Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian. The jury determined that the joint work of this group of artists established in Dubai, who have collaborated since 2009, distinguishes itself from the dominant trends in current artistic practice by the recovery of the importance of experience and sensuality in their work. While their installations, with a distinctive playful character, blur individual practices under an immediate visual impact, their works also address contemporary politics with wit and irony. On show at MACBA will be their artistic proposal consisting of Macht Schon and From Sea to Dawn (2016 17), two paintings in movement, in addition to The Maids (2012 15), a work based on the novel of the same title by Jean Genet, a fantasy about power and the discourse of

embracing others, together with additional works made for the occasion, some in collaboration with other creators such as John Cole and Joan Baixas. ROSEMARIE CASTORO. Focus at Infinity Press conference: 8 November, 11.30 am MACBA Dates: 9 November 2017 15 April 2018 Curator: Tanya Barson Focus at Infinity will be the first major retrospective dedicated to the work of the North-American artist Rosemarie Castoro (1939 2015), featuring her work from the years 1964 to 1979. The exhibition includes her Minimalist abstract paintings, her performances and Conceptual installations, and her Post-Minimal sculptures and Land Art. Castoro was part of the artistic circle of the New York avant-garde along with artists such as Carl André, Donald Judd, Yvonne Ranier, Robert Morris, Sol Lewitt and Agnes Martin, among others. The exhibition, curated by MACBA s Chief Curator, Tanya Barson, will contain more than 250 works revealing the diversity of Castoro s artistic practice, as well as her commitment to performance, Conceptualism, concrete poetry, Procedural art and installation, in addition to the relevance of feminism and activist politics in her work. Despite her participation in various exhibitions, the fact that Lucy Lippard included her work in the exhibitions 555,087 at the Seattle Art Museum (1969) and 955,000 at the Vancouver Art Gallery (1970), and her having taken part in the creations of Yvonne Rainer and Hollis Frampton, Castoro s work has been largely excluded from hegemonic historical accounts. The exhibition at MACBA seeks to restore Castoro and the contribution made by her works to the map of the history of contemporary art. To this end, the exhibition catalogue will present a new academic approach that, apart from a text by the curator, will feature the participation of Melissa Feldman, whose work has focused on alternative readings of Minimalism, and Anna Lovatt, a specialist in Minimalist and Conceptual drawing. A 1975 essay on Rosemarie Castoro by Lucy Lippard, originally published in Artforum, will also be reprinted. Touring of the MACBA Collection ENTHUSIASM.
