Lesson 2 Reading Read the article. What three different kinds of shoe does it mention? More than a Shoe? They protect our feet and allow us to walk more easily (most of the time!). Yet for some people shoes are much more than just footwear. From sandals to moon boots, they can cost hundreds, sometimes thousands, of euros. What makes some shoes so special? One of the most famous shoe designers, Manolo Blahnik, thinks he has the answer. Blahnik grew up in the Canary Islands, and went to Paris so that he could study art. Then he moved to London in his twenties where he began designing shoes for women. Now Manolos, as they re often called, are popular all over the world. So what s so great about Manolos? Although they re beautiful, the high heels aren t always comfortable. As for the price, they definitely aren t cheap. Blahnik thinks wearing them gives their owners pleasure, however, because each pair is a work of art. He says some women love his shoes so much that they never take them off! While some women may love their Manolos, trainers are what the rest of the world is wearing! Despite the fact that they were originally designed for athletes, trainers are now acceptable footwear for all kinds of people. The comfort of trainers is what makes them so easy to wear and designers are coming up with new versions that weigh less all the time. Sports shoe designers are not the only ones who use the latest technology to make shoes. Dave Graziosi is a shoe engineer who designs space boots for astronauts. You need high-tech shoes in order to walk in space and his moon boots cost $30,000 a pair! Graziosi s latest space boot is the M2 Trekker. It can be worn in temperatures ranging from -212 0 C to +177 0 C! More than a shoe? Definitely! 110 Guess what! Comprehension Before the 19th century, there wasn t a left or right shoe. They were identical! Write R (Right), W (Wrong) or DS (Doesn't say). 1 Manolos are named after their designer. 2 All of Blahnik s shoes are easy to wear. 3 Some kinds of trainers are very heavy. 4 Space boots used to weigh more than they do now. 5 The M2 Trekker can be worn in extreme conditions. Vocabulary Complete the sentences with these words. comfort high-tech latest pleasure ranging versions 1 Daisy always knows what the fashions are. 2 When I buy jeans, I m more interested in than how they look. 3 These hats come in all sizes, from children s to adults. 4 Nothing gives Nicola more than buying clothes! 5 I buy cheap of designer clothes at the market. 6 Some running shoes can actually make you run faster.

Grammar Clauses of Purpose We use in order to and so that to explain why someone does something. We only use in order to when the subject of the two clauses is the same. It is followed by the bare infinitive of the verb. People wear designer clothes in order to look good. We can use so that when the subject of the two clauses is the same or different. It is followed by a subject pronoun (I, you, he, etc) and a verb. People wear designer clothes so that they look good. I go shopping with Mum so that she can pay for my clothes! Vocabulary Circle the odd one out. 1 sandals slippers heels 2 cotton material leather 3 suit dress skirt 4 tight baggy loose 5 smart scruffy formal 6 old-fashioned stylish fashionable Clauses of Contrast We use although, in spite of and despite to contrast two opposite ideas in a sentence. We separate the two clauses with a comma. Although is followed by a subject and a verb. Although I like the colour red, it doesn t suit me. In spite of and despite are followed by a noun, a gerund or the fact that + subject + verb. In spite of their high heels, the shoes were comfortable. Despite their high heels, the shoes were comfortable. In spite of / Despite having high heels, the shoes were comfortable. In spite of / Despite the fact that they had high heels, the shoes were comfortable. A Look back at the article. Underline two clauses of purpose and two clauses of contrast. B Complete the paragraph with these words. although despite in order to in spite so that (1) jeans were invented over 100 years ago, they are still in fashion today! They were originally made of thick, strong material (2) they could be worn as work clothes. Now people wear them at any time (3) look cool! Jeans are the uniform of young people everywhere, but many older people also wear them (4) of their age. The original blue jeans are still the most popular (5) the fact that jeans now come in many different colours and styles. Listening Listen and change the words in bold to make the sentences true. 1 Miriam helps people with their relationship problems. 2 Miriam suggests that Zoe orders some shoes from a shop in a big city. 3 Miriam says that the prices of these shoes are quite high. 4 Jamie hasn t got enough money to buy a new suit. 5 Miriam thinks Jamie might be able to find some cheap new clothes. You will find any excuse to go to the shops even when you don t need anything new and you spend a fortune on the latest fashions. Be careful, though at this rate, you could easily get into debt! Try to find a new (cheaper!) hobby that gives you as much pleasure as shopping. 9-12 points You re a sensible shopper. Although you enjoy shopping sometimes, you don t live to shop! You think carefully before you buy something. If it isn t a bargain, you d rather save your money. Remember, you deserve to spend money on nice things for yourself sometimes, though! 5-8 points You re the world s least enthusiastic shopper! You aren t interested in having lots of possessions and you only buy things when you have to. For you, shopping centres are the worst invention ever and you would have everything delivered if you could. Do yourself a favour and don t get so stressed about shopping! If you need to buy something, go to the shops early in the morning when they aren t so busy. Say it like this! Comprehension Answer the questions. 1 Why is Internet shopping a good idea for people who scored 5-8 points? 2 Which group of people might need to borrow money from others? 3 Which group of people enjoys buying cheap things? 4 Which answer to question 2 would someone who is careful with money give? 5 When should people who scored 5-8 points go shopping? 112 Clothes shopping Complete the dialogue with these phrases and then practise the dialogue with your partner. Student A should turn to pages 130 and 131 and look at cards 1A and 2A. Student B should turn to pages 132 and 133 and look at cards 1B and 2B. Writing Using headings in reports Don t forget the (6) start on Monday! from 9 am to 11 am Reports are organised into different paragraphs and each one has a heading. The first paragraph usually gives the aim of the report and the last paragraph gives the conclusion. A Look at the possible headings (1-4) for the main paragraphs of a report about a town s shopping facilities. Match them with their meanings (a-d). 1 Location a How good the shops are 2 Variety b Whether the shops are cheap or expensive 3 Quality c Where the shops are 4 Prices d What different kinds of shops there are B Read the report and choose suitable headings for the main paragraphs from A. There is one heading that you don t need to use. Shopping Facilities in Bodwick. Aim The purpose of this report is to describe the shopping facilities in Bodwick. (1) There is one big indoor shopping centre in Bodwick as well as many other smaller shops. In the shopping centre, you can find all the well-known boutiques as well as two department stores. In other areas of the town there are smaller shops that sell everything from secondhand books to pets. (2) The shopping centre is 3 kilometres outside the town and you can only get there by car. That makes it quite difficult for people without their own transport to go shopping there. The smaller shops are easier to get to because they are all near the centre of town. Task (3) It s generally cheaper to buy things in the shopping centre than in the other shops. This is probably because they are owned by big companies. The prices in the smaller shops depend on what you buy. You can find some bargains in the second-hand shops, for example, but the antique shops are expensive. Conclusion In spite of the inconvenient location of the shopping centre, it is very popular. It has a wide variety of shops in one place and its prices are low. However, the smaller shops sell more unusual things and are better for shoppers who don t have a car. C Now write a report about the shopping facilities in your town. Use the headings from the model above for your paragraphs. D Read your report and check that you have used suitable headings. 113
